New Citizens Celebrated at Naturalization Ceremony
Forty immigrants from 18 nations became the newest citizens of the United States at a ceremony on the County Center campus in downtown Redwood City. San Mateo County Supervisors Carole Groom and Dave Pine congratulated the immigrants on their journey to becoming citizens and honored their commitment to democracy. The new citizens come from Belarus, Brazil, Burma, Canada, China, El Salvador, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine and Yemen.

Nearly 300 Firearms Collected at Successful Gun Buyback
Handguns, rifles and untraceable “ghost guns” were among the nearly 300 firearms collected at a recent buyback event in San Carlos, sponsored by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the Redwood City and Belmont police departments and Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback. A total of 288 firearms were collected. In exchange, participants were given $50 cash for non-functioning firearms, $100 cash for handguns, shotguns or rifles and $200 cash for assault weapons and “ghost guns.” Learn why a San Carlos woman supports gun buybacks as a way to reduce violence.

Property Taxes Due Monday
Remember, the first installment of secured property taxes is due by 11:59 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12 because the usual Dec. 10 deadline falls on the weekend. The Tax Collector's office is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 555 County Center, First Floor, Redwood City. Payments can also be dropped in a mailbox off Winslow Street in Redwood City, near the new parking structure. Please note, this mailbox closes at 5 p.m. Dec. 12 and does not provide a receipt. Payments can also be made via PayPal or credit card, with an online service fee of 2.35 percent, or via e-check with no charge.

Dogs Welcome at Certain San Mateo County Parks
San Mateo County Parks provides a variety of options when exploring the outdoors with your dog. On-leash dog walking is available on trails at Coyote Point, Junipero Serra, Devil's Slide Trail, Pillar Point Bluff, Mirada Surf and the Dardenelle Trail at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. Visit Quarry Park in El Granada to check-out off-leash trails, part of a pilot to assess this new activity. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the program and rules before going. For everyone's benefit, please be sure to follow dog trail rules at each park.
