Board of Supervisors Adopt $4.2 Billion Budget
At its regular meeting Sept. 27, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted an updated $4.2 billion budget focused on long-term goals including ending homelessness, supporting the County’s COVID-19 recovery and advancing social justice and equity. The approved budget also includes $158 million for capital projects. Bracing for an economic downturn, the County continues to focus on priorities with a conservative approach in budgeting for FY 2022-23, said County Executive Mike Callagy.

$340K Grant to Help Foster Youth With Housing Costs
The County of San Mateo has been awarded $340,677 to provide housing assistance to youth who are transitioning out of foster care and are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. The funding was awarded through the federal Housing and Urban Development’s Foster Youth to Independence Initiative. The grant will provide 15 young adults ranging from 18 to 24 years old with vouchers they can use to subsidize rent. Each participant will receive on average about $1,700 a month in rental assistance.

San Mateo County Libraries Releases Annual Report
San Mateo County Libraries has published its 2021-22 annual report, covering the achievements and expanded offerings of the last year. In its 110th year of service, the system of 13 libraries celebrated being first in California Star Library Ratings and third in National Star Library Ratings. The report shares the libraries’ expanded hours, online resources, tech offerings and free meal services. It also details the successful return of in-person services, new student Empower Card and mental health and wellness resources and classes.

County Seeks Next Poet Laureate for Two-Year Term
The County of San Mateo is recruiting for the next Poet Laureate to elevate poetry into the consciousness of local residents and to help celebrate the literary arts. The Poet Laureate also opens the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors meetings with a poem every quarter. The post is a two-year position that includes a $5,000 annual stipend. Published poets 18 years old or older and a resident of San Mateo County for at least three years are encouraged to apply. The application can be found here. Deadline to apply is Oct. 30, 2022.

Construction of Midcoast Multi-Modal Trail Underway
The Midcoast Multi-Modal Trail Improvements Project along Highway 1 between Miramar Drive and Coronado Street in El Granada is moving along with the majority of the project now slated for completion December 2022. The project includes installation of a pedestrian bridge over Medio Creek. The new bridge is expected to arrive in February 2023. Main activities currently underway include constructing the bridge foundation, vehicular barriers and ADA ramps. Once complete, the trail will connect El Granada and Miramar to the Naomi Patridge Trail in Half Moon Bay.
