Transmission of COVID-19 remains high in San Mateo County, reflecting the continued dominance of the BA.5 variant. "As many families begin to think about kids returning to classrooms while there is both high transmission and fewer requirements or restrictions, we are grateful to our education partners for their work to update prevention policies and protocols to enable safe in-person learning," said Health Chief Louise Rogers. "We value the focus by educational professionals and families on being current on vaccination and promoting ventilation, masking, testing, and staying home when sick."

County Supervisors Endorse Prop. 1 on November Ballot
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted an advocacy agenda at its Aug. 2 meeting to support women’s health and reproductive rights following the reversal of Roe v. Wade. The Women’s Reproductive Freedom and Healthcare Privacy Advocacy Agenda includes endorsement of Prop 1, a California state constitutional amendment establishing the right to reproductive care and abortion services that will appear on the November 2022 ballot. The agenda also prioritizes support of state and federal legislation that would increase access to reproductive health care services.

First Celebration of Arts and Culture Kicks Off in August
The San Mateo County Office of Arts and Culture and the Arts Commission will present the first Countywide Celebration of Arts and Culture for the entire month of August. The theme — "Building Community through the Arts" — is focused on highlighting the exciting and diverse programs, activities and events happening across the county. The month-long celebration will culminate on Aug. 27 with a free event at San Mateo’s Central Park Outdoor Stage, featuring a public space for all to enjoy performances including dance, music, spoken poetry, theater and more.

County Seeks Applicants to Free Civics 101 Course
The County of San Mateo is accepting applications for the Civics 101 Academy, a free nine-week course that provides an in-depth look at how local government works. A series of workshops and hands-on exercises offers participants with the chance to learn from top County leaders, including elected officials, and ask questions. Civics 101 also serves as a recruiting tool for the County’s numerous advisory boards and commissions. The 2022 Civics 101 Academy will run for nine consecutive Tuesday evenings, 6 to 8:30, from September 6 through November 1.

New Mental Health Center Takes Shape Among Nature
Construction on a center that will transform the treatment of San Mateo County’s most vulnerable mentally ill residents is making great progress. Once completed in 2024, the 121-bed Cordilleras Mental Health Center located off Edgewood Road between Redwood City and San Carlos will offer views of the nearby rolling hills with a design that incorporates nature, small residential buildings and shared community spaces to create a healing environment. The County began construction on the $155 million center in April 2021 following years of planning and site work.

County Health Provides Guidance on Monkeypox
With the monkeypox vaccine supply constrained, County Health is making its allocation of doses available to local health care providers and to neighboring jurisdictions that are offering large-scale vaccinations available. A small supply is being kept locally on hand for individuals identified through contact tracing. County Health officials urges people to protect themselves against the monkeypox virus, which spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and bodily fluids. Residents at high risk should contact their primary care provider for vaccination information.
