CalFire, County Fire Agencies Contain Edgewood Fire
Two vegetation fires that ignited on June 21 burned through 20 acres in unincorporated Emerald Hills and along Edgewood Park in Redwood City. An evacuation order for two zones in the Woodside and Emerald Hills area was issued via Zonehaven. The fire was 95 percent contained by the afternoon of June 23. No structures were damaged. The cause of the fires are still under investigation. High temperatures and very low fuel moistures caused the fire to spread so quickly. Residents are encouraged to be prepared, sign up for emergency alerts and know their zones.

County Health Offers Vaccine to Under 5 at Targeted Clinics
Parents and care-givers of young children now eligible for COVID-19 vaccines should contact their pediatric provider to schedule an appointment. Other options include Walgreens (for ages 3 and older) and CVS (for 18 months and older). Information is also available on MyTurn. San Mateo County Health is providing technical and admin support at targeted COVID-19 vaccine clinics in certain communities most impacted by the pandemic. County Health’s community clinics offer vaccines and boosters to residents 5 and older.

Middlefield Road Businesses Open During Construction
Construction on Middlefield Road in the unincorporated community of North Fair Oaks has picked up with significant changes to traffic patterns, lane configurations and parking. Businesses remain open during construction with free off-street parking available around the corner. Slated for completion winter 2022, the rebuilt corridor will be a vibrant downtown area with bike lanes, wider sidewalks, landscaping, streetlights, and more. Funding for the project comes from the County’s Measure K half-cent sales tax ($12.5 million), utility companies ($8.3 million) and other sources.

Supervisors Approve Plan to Support Reproductive Rights
At its June 14 meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved the Women’s Reproductive Freedom and Healthcare Privacy Action Plan to provide financial support for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte to deliver increased abortion care; create a buffer zone ordinance for the unincorporated areas of the county; develop an advocacy agenda; establish the Reproductive Rights and Healthcare Privacy Subcommittee to include Supervisors Pine and Slocum; and launch an information campaign to let patients know that San Mateo County Health continues to offer reproductive services.

Fuel Reduction Work Underway in County Parks
Work on treating acres of County parkland continues this summer to reduce wildfire risks and improve community safety. County Parks is increasing wildfire resiliency of Quarry Park by treating up to 100 acres in partnership with San Mateo Resource Conservation District (RCD). Crews at Huddart Park continue work also in partnership with RCD, creating shaded fuel breaks and thinning vegetation. Fuel reduction work on 19 acres at Edgewood Park includes removing dead standing trees near select trails and neighboring structures. All work may require temporary trail closures.

Health Officials Urge Awareness About Monkeypox
With increased summer travel and gatherings, Bay Area Health Officers urge people to protect themselves against the monkeypox virus, which spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and bodily fluids, such as through crowded settings or sexual contact. The alert from nine health jurisdictions comes as cases—which appear in individuals as distinctive rashes and sores that can look like blisters or pimples—continue to emerge in the Bay Area, nation and globe. There are no reported cases of monkeypox in San Mateo County at this time.
