County Health, Office of Ed Offer Tips for Holiday Safety
The San Mateo County Office of Education with County Health produced safety guidance for families during the holidays. Holiday events and gatherings can pose a risk of spreading COVID-19. Recommendations for a healthy holiday include staying home if you're not feeling well, gathering outdoors and getting fully vaccinated. Vaccines are the best protection against infection and are now available for children ages 5-11. The County offers boosters, first and second shots for individuals 18+ as well as pediatric vaccinations for children at the San Mateo County Event Center, 1346 Saratoga Drive, San Mateo. Dec. 18, 2021, will be the last day for both the pediatric and adult clinics at the Event Center. Vaccination options are listed on the San Mateo County Health website.

Board of Supervisors Create Gun Buyback Program
The Board of Supervisors approved at its Nov. 16, 2021, meeting a grant of up to $208,000 in Measure K Reserves to establish a San Mateo County Gun Buyback Program. The funding will support a series of gun buyback events through 2023. The program will be supported by an additional $100,000 from the Sheriff’s Office and $67,000 raised by Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback, a local community group. The first of five planned events will be held on Dec. 11, 2021, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1000 Skyway Road in San Carlos. Individuals will be able turn in firearms to law enforcement, with no questions asked, and receive $100 per gun and $200 per assault weapon.

County Completes Update of Natural Hazards Plan
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors adopted the 2021 Multijurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (MJLHMP), a five-year blueprint for the County and its partners to reduce the impact of natural hazards such as earthquake, fire, flooding, extreme heat and landslide. The Board’s action also triggers Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) final approval, which ensures the County of San Mateo and its planning partners remain eligible for pre- and post-disaster mitigation project grant funding. The County of San Mateo, led by the Department of Emergency Management, and its 35 planning partners began updating the previous plan in January.

Youth Climate Ambassadors Program Seeks Applicants
San Mateo County students in 9th -11th grade are encouraged to apply for the Youth Climate Ambassadors (YCA) program, now accepting applications for the 2022 cohort. The YCA program is a year-long, youth leadership program led by the County's Office of Sustainability in partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education and Peninsula Clean Energy. Past Youth Climate Ambassadors have taken on projects to conserve essential resources like water and energy at their schools and raise awareness about the impacts of climate change in San Mateo County. County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center Earns Award for Excellence
The San Mateo County Office of Public Safety Communications 9-1-1- dispatch center is being recognized by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) as an Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE) for emergency medical dispatching. Accreditation from the IAED is the highest distinction given to emergency communication centers. The County’s 9-1-1 communications center is the 97th center in the world and 9th in the state to achieve ACE status. Strong local oversight, rigorous quality processes, and a commitment to data-driven continuous improvement are just a few examples of what distinguishes the County’s dispatch center to receive this award.

Evaluation of The Big Lift Reveals Initiative’s Success
The latest and final report in the RAND Corporation’s multiphase evaluation of The Big Lift reveals the initiative’s success in improving educational outcomes for students from families with low incomes. Analyses completed by the San Mateo County Office of Education further highlight the initiative’s success in supporting families through the COVID-19 pandemic and deepening kindergarten readiness gains through targeted literacy pilot efforts. Launched by the County of San Mateo, the County Office of Education, and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, The Big Lift is a bold social venture that helps more students achieve reading proficiency by third grade.
