September is Suicide Prevention Month!

2

The 2019 September Suicide Prevention Month (SPM) is a month away. SPM includes National Suicide Prevention Week (September 8-14) and World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10). During the month, individuals and organizations around the country join their voices to amplify the message that suicide can be prevented, and to reach as many people as possible with the tools and resources to support themselves and those around them.

San Mateo County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services and Suicide Prevention Committee is partnering with libraries and community agencies in San Mateo County to host 12 events and promote a social media campaign. This initiative aims to equip individuals with words and resources to support people who may be thinking about suicide. Events include support groups, informational presentations, day of prayer, film screenings, craft workshops and lived experience speakers.

This year’s theme in San Mateo County is interpersonal connectedness where we build positive relationships that say #ImHereForYou. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that connectedness is overall an important protective factor against suicide and states, "[c]onnectedness between individuals can lead to increased frequency of social contact, lowered levels of social isolation or loneliness, and an increased number of positive relationships."

We all have a role to play in preventing suicide. Please help promote Suicide Prevention Month, in big or small ways, by:

Offering your ear, shoulder and love to communicate to someone that #ImHereForYou.

Wearing purple and teal throughout the month of September. You can reach out to us to pick up some purple/teal ribbons.
