Public Health Q&A
Q: Why do I need to wear a mask if I am fully vaccinated?
Last week's Public Health Order means that all in Stanislaus County must wear a mask in public indoor spaces, even if they're fully vaccinated. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself from infection, severe illness, or death. But no vaccine is 100% effective. Masks provide an additional layer of protection, especially when the virus is circulating widely.
Masks work as filters so they reduce the amount of COVID-19 that a person breathes in. This makes it less likely that people will get infected. If a vaccinated person is still exposed to COVID-19, the vaccine will have taught their immune system to fight the virus and lower the chances of them getting sick.
The current surge has caused our hospitals to become filled with COVID-19 patients. Wearing masks can help keep the community safer and reduce the impact on our hospital systems.

Q: Why are we only tracking some variants?
Variants are tracked so we can learn more about how COVID-19 is changing. California focuses its tracking efforts on the variants present in our state that spread more easily, cause more severe disease, or may make the vaccine less effective. These variants are called Variants of Interest (VOIs) or Variants of Concern (VOCs).
Changes in the virus, or variants, are made as the disease is spread from person to person. The most effective way to stop new variants from developing is to not get COVID in the first place. Getting vaccinated and wearing a mask are the keys to stopping variants.
