Meet our Summer Day Camp Counselors!

Summer camp is right around the corner and our awesomely popular day camps (Yu-Chi, Doyle and Wa-Tam) will be starting up very soon! For our seasoned campers, it’s no secret that our staff is what makes our camps so popular, but if you are new to the day camp experience, then we think you should know that WE HAVE THE VERY BEST CAMP COUNSELORS AROUND! We had a chance to catch up with a couple of our returners and talk camp names, traditions and theme weeks and here's what they had to say…

Chris “Tank” Bentham
Camp Watam Counselor
3rd yr on staff

Jeffrey “Payday” DeGolia
Camp Wa-Tam Counselor
5th yr on staff

Jason “Crunch” Taylor
Camp Yu-Chi Director
3-yr CIT, 7th yr on staff

Chris Bentham Jeffrey DeGolia
Jason Taylor

Is there a story behind how you earned that Camp name?
Payday: Because Paydays are my absolute FAVORITE candy bars!!

Tank: When I came to in-service for my first day at camp I had no idea what my camp name should be, so some of the older staff members named me” tank” because I am a pretty big guy – 6'3'' and 195 pounds – guess I’m built like a tank!

Crunch: I was having a hard time thinking of a name because it had to be perfect. As I got to my first day of training I still didn’t have one, and I was worried because staff will choose for you if you can’t think of one, but I really wanted to choose my own. There was a Crunch bar in the car and it seemed perfect. Since then I’ve been Crunch, and it’s been a major part of who I am today.

What Camp tradition do you most love?
Tank: I love Tuesday swim days at Camp Wa-Tam. It is so fun to hike to the swimming hole and enjoy the water!

Payday: I love the games rotation especially capture the flag. It gives the kids and me a chance to run wild!

What is your favorite activity that you get to lead at camp and why?
Crunch: Everything at Camp Yu-Chi is incredible but my absolute favorite activity is songfest; it has been my favorite since day 1 as a Counselor-in-Training and still is as I enter my 10th year at camp. As a CIT I would watch the staff sing loudly with energy and passion; the feeling it gave off can be used to describe Yu-Chi, pure happiness and enjoyment. Singing songs and leading skits at songfest is not only one of my favorite memories at camp, but one of my favorite memories of my life. I have never felt as much friendship and care between people as I have at Yu-Chi; it is my second home and always will be.

Which “theme” week are you most looking forward to this year and why?
Tank: My favorite theme is always Superhero week. The kids and the staff always have fun thinking of our favorite super power.

Payday: I am always a huge fan of prehistoric/caveman week, the crafts are always fun and I always get my fill of the famous “Brontosaurus Burgers!”

Crunch: Pirate week is my favorite! The crafts are great and everybody seems to be in a “piratey” mood. We get to talk in pirate accents and wear eye patches and I’m hoping to bring a deep sea battle to Yu-Chi! My favorite field trip happens over pirate week, we get to go to Dorans beach and have a barbecue! It also fits well with my name; I get to be “Captain Crunch!”

Join Crunch, Tank and Payday for an unforgettable experience this summer at camp! Register now before sessions fill up!

Neighborhood Services Soccer Program

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

Middle School Soccer Wrap-Up The Neighborhood Services team just finished up another fantastic season of Middle School Soccer, which involved over 180 youth in our community. Expanding on last season, each middle school (Slater, Santa Rosa, Roseland Accelerated, Cook and Comstock) had two division teams, “Champions” and “Premier.” Participants from each school were assigned to the Champions or Premier divisions based on their skill level and played six regular season games. Four teams from each division qualified for the playoffs and the top two in each division then squared off in separate championship tournaments. Congratulations to both 1st place teams – Cook Middle School Team (Champions Division) and Santa Rosa Middle School Team (Premier Division). We couldn’t be prouder of these young athletes for displaying such exemplary dedication, sportsmanship and teamwork all season long!
