Making Positive Changes from the Inside Out

A key component of Live Well San Diego is improving the culture from within – both for partners and County government. This means supporting employees in being healthy and safe and then, in turn, they become champions for living well in the community.

This month’s edition of the Live Well San Diego newsletter features stories, events and resources for creating a healthy, safe and thriving San Diego County from the inside out:

  • Read how the San Diego County Employees’ Charitable Organization (CECO) is helping make a difference with help from County staff
  • Learn about internal efforts at San Diego City College to support students and staff
  • Read about a County employee who is helping change the culture within
  • Hear how County staff are taking an innovative approach to conducting their staff meetings
  • Learn how and why the Live Well @ Work newsletter was created – and tips on how to start your own wellness newsletter!
  • Hear about efforts at a local church to help their congregation be healthy, safe and thriving
  • Read how North County staff recently launched a Live Well San Diego Employee Wellness Committee
  • Learn how Probation officers have transformed a workspace into a fitness room to help staff stay fit
  • Read about the positive things happening among staff at the San Diego County Sheriff's San Marcos Station

We hope this newsletter will inspire you to look within and discover ways you can grow internally to help create positive change externally. We all play a role in helping San Diego County residents live well.

San Diego City College Is Living Well From Within

San Diego City College (SDCC) recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Established in 1914, City College was the first community college in San Diego (San Diego Junior College) with 34 students and 4 instructors. Fast forward to 2015, SDCC now boasts over 16,000 students and more than 1,200 faculty and staff.  While the number of students, staff and faculty has grown over the years, so has their dedication to supporting positive change on campus.

The Live Well San Diego Top 10 Indicators: Unemployment Rate

(This short article is a continuation in a series featuring the Live Well San Diego Top 10 Indicators.)

Culture change can have a positive effect in reducing unemployment since it often shapes attitudes about choice of work and work itself.

This month’s featured indicator - Unemployment Rate - measures the percent of the total labor force ages 16 and over that is unemployed. This is an important measure because when workers are unemployed, their families lose wages and the nation as a whole loses their contributions to the economy in terms of the goods or services that could have been produced. Unemployed workers also lose their purchasing power, which can lead to unemployment for other workers, creating a cascade effect.

In contrast, employment has a strong positive influence on the financial health and overall well-being of the population. Being employed can support healthy behaviors related to diet and exercise, which can decrease the risk of disease or mortality. Because employer-sponsored health insurance is the most common source of health insurance coverage, employment can also facilitate access to health care.

Stay tuned as information about each Live Well San Diego Indicator will be highlighted in upcoming editions. Learn more about the indicators here >>
