Being Prepared for the Unexpected

Emergency Preparedness

This past May, the County experienced the largest wildfires in the region since the devastating fires of 2007.  They occurred early in the year, well in advance of the typical Santa Ana season. The May wildfires remind us that, with summer plans in full swing – vacations, barbecues, and family outings to parks and outdoor spaces – it is important to remember to be prepared for the unexpected.

This month’s edition of the Live Well San Diego newsletter is focused on Emergency Preparedness, and we are featuring resources to help you be ready in case of an emergency year-round. The Fire Authority offers information on creating defensible space by properly clearing or maintaining your landscaping 100 feet around your home to dramatically increase the chance of your house surviving a wildfire. The Department of Environmental Health provides tips on swimming pool, barbeque, picnic and food safety, and preventing insect bites. The Department of Animal Services shares insight on how to prevent dog bites and snake bites while exploring San Diego’s natural environment. And the Office of Emergency Services offers a free smart phone application to help you stay informed during a regional disaster.

A key focus of the Live Well San Diego initiative is improving the overall safety of the San Diego community—Living Safely –- which is only possible when individuals, families and partner organizations are active in helping residents prepare. Volunteer park patrol members join park rangers in keeping visitors safe on trails and open areas. County employees at the Office of Emergency Services offer preparedness and crisis support and resources for businesses and individuals. During the recent wildfires, first responders from throughout the region acted quickly, and local governments and the military mobilized in a coordinated response that was found worthy of recognition by the San Diego Taxpayers Association.  Neighbors joined neighbors to help each other wherever possible. It was a true community-wide relief effort, exemplifying the power of partnering to solve problems, and demonstrating how our region will achieve the vision of Live Well San Diego—together.

While you’re having fun in the sun this month, remember to wear sunscreen and be prepared for a challenging fire season.  Together, we can make our communities safe and healthy places to learn, grow and live well.

Yours in preparedness,

Holly Crawford, Director
County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services

Aging Summit Brings Together More Than 2,000 Seniors and Caregivers

On June 12 2014, the County of San Diego’s Aging & Independence Services hosted the 2014 Aging Summit, which focused on creating a safe and caring community. This day-long event explored the importance of safety measures for individuals and addressed the concerns and challenges facing family caregivers in an aging population. Keynote speakers included Gail Sheehy, best-selling author of Passages and Passages for Caregivers, who addressed the challenges facing family caregivers today; Darlene Shiley, philanthropist and former caregiver; and Paul Greenwood, head of the District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Protection Unit.

In addition to the 1,800 participants who attended the central event at the Town & Country Resort in San Diego, over 500 people participated at the North County satellite site hosted at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.  Read the full story >>
