*Note: Beginning in July 2026, this stand-alone monthly Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events Bulletin will transition to a combined Topical and Events Bulletin. The new monthly format will focus on educating residents and businesses on various Water Quality Improvement Topics as well as select County-sponsored Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events.
We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in June and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.
 Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can help preserve water quality for years to come. Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions – Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 10am to 12pm – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Topics vary by month and will focus on a different plant or nature-based theme. Science activities engage kids with cool hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity. June 27, 9am to 4pm – Monthly Water District Wave-In Day – On the last Saturday of every month, free admission to the Garden is offered to customers of supporting water districts for a day of learning about sustainable living and water-wise gardening. Alta Vista Botanical Garden – Kids in the Garden Classes – June 13, 10am to 12pm – ($5 fee, includes entry to the Garden) – Kids and their families are invited to attend Saturday classes featuring hands-on activities, incredible edibles, conservation lessons, and tours of the gardens. SoCal Gas Pro Series – Permeable Everywhere – Slow, Spread, & Sink on Every Landscape (Note: this is a 3-hour webinar) – Learn practical steps to integrating permeability into your landscape. Topics include simple calculations necessary for creating permeability, installing and maintaining permeable hardscapes, steps to improve infiltration rates on every landscape, the difference between active and passive capture, and more. Cities of La Mesa and Lemon Grove – Free Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Drive-Through Event – June 6 (by appointment only – 9am to 12:45pm). Residents of the Cities of La Mesa and Lemon Grove can dispose of their household hazardous waste such as batteries, fluorescent bulbs, electronics, paints/solvents, and more. SD Environmental Services One-Day Collection Event - City of San Diego – June 6, 9am to 1pm – A household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event will be held at Mission Bay South Shores Boat Ramp, San Diego. Learn more.
Zero Waste San Diego Fixit Clinics – Learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away at the following Fix-It Clinics in May. Bring broken or non-working items for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Clinics hosted by SD Fixit Clinic with the help of many other zero waste partners.

Monthly Compost Pile Turnings – Various days, timeslots, and cities – Attend these monthly turnings of South Bay Sustainable Communities Network soil saver compost bins at select compost hub locations throughout South San Diego County. Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Events – June 13, 10am to 12pm – Manure Composting for Backyard Farmers’ Workshop – Learn about the importance of composting manure and how it can benefit your garden, our waterways, your budget, and the planet. Topics include how to get started at home and compost manure safely, as well as ways to reduce pests, health hazards, and water contamination. Funded by the County of San Diego. Grow With Me Young Steward Program – Mondays through Thursdays in June, 10am to 11am ($$ fees vary) – Designed for younger stewards (ages 2-5) and their caregiver, this interactive, hour-long experience blends hands-on learning with opportunities to explore new activities. Together, children will discover what it means to care for and love our planet in fun, meaningful ways. Topics and activities will vary weekly. Learn more or register.

Registration Open Now – 2026 Summer Discovery Camps - June through August ($$ fees vary) – Discovery Camps feature hands-on, educational lessons, and activities around a central theme designated for that camp week. All camps take place outdoors in our Nature Nodes, and are filled with nature walks, animal interactions, and crafts. Camp groups are split by age ranges and capped at 12 campers per group with 1 teacher. Camp is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Register early as camps fill up quickly. Escondido Creek Conservancy Welcome to the Watershed Series! – June 6, 9am to 12pm – Enjoy nature and learn about the work the Conservancy is doing to protect special places throughout the Escondido Creek Watershed. June 13, 8:30am to 10:30am – Wildlife Tour – Discover lots of waterfowl playing hide-and-seek with us among the lagoon waters. We may find mushrooms along the way. We will also visit four distinct plant communities at Harbaugh Seaside Trails. Learn more or reserve your spot.
Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve – Junior Rangers Program Ongoing Kids’ Educational Event – Saturdays, 11am to 12pm – Kids ages 8 through 12 are invited to take part in discovering the rich heritage preserved in parks. They will participate in hands-on activities and can earn awards such as pins, certificates, and patches as they progress through the program! Center for Watershed Protection – 2026 Webcast Series: Webcast 5 – Machine Learning in Watershed Modeling for Stormwater Planning and Flood Forecasting – June 17, 1pm to 2:30pm Eastern Time ($$ fees vary) – This webcast will address how emerging remote sensing technologies and machine learning algorithms can enhance the efficiency of BMP inspection and maintenance. San Diego River Park Foundation – The following water quality monitoring events will be offered in June. Help collect data that guides river management and catches potential water quality issues early through monthly water quality sampling.
Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Docent-Led Lagoon Walks – Summertime in the Wetlands – June 20, 10am to 11:30am – As summer comes on, join for a docent-led nature walk to discover dramatic changes in bird populations in the Wetlands. This is a 90-minute walk appropriate for all ages. Learn more.
Earth Discovery Institute Monarch Butterfly Festival - Crestridge Ecological Reserve – June 20, 10am to 1pm – Attend this family-fun event for a celebration of the monarch butterfly and the native habitat that sustains it. Event includes family-friendly activities, native milkweed and native flowering plants for purchase, a raffle for a chance to win a complete monarch habitat garden, and more.
