We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in May and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.

Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can help preserve water quality for years to come. 2026 May Events Garden

The Water Conservation Garden – The following events will be offered in May. Sponsored by Otay and Helix Water Districts, Sweetwater Authority, and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.

  • May 2, 9am to 3pm – Spring Garden & Butterfly Festival – This annual celebration brings together gardening enthusiasts, families, students, and the community for a day of discovery, entertainment, and inspiration including a new, permanent rain barrel demonstration area funded by the County of San Diego Attend to enjoy a day filled with specialty vendors, food trucks, plant sales, live music, and fun throughout the Cuyamaca College campus. Festival partners include Cuyamaca College, Coyote Music Festival, and Heritage of the Americas Museum. Learn more.
  • May 8, 9am to 4pm – Free-Day Fridays – Attendees will receive free admission on the second Friday of every month. Activities include mini-tours, arts & crafts, community partner booths, scavenger hunts and prizes, and more. Learn more.
  • May 30, 9am to 4pm – Monthly Water District Wave-In Day – On the last Saturday of every month, free admission to the Garden is offered to customers of supporting water districts for a day of learning about sustainable living and water-wise gardening.   • May 30, 10am to 11am – Free 2026 County Workshop – Rain Barrels and Beyond: How to Harvest Rainwater for Your Home and Garden – Learn how to collect and reuse rainwater with a simple rain barrel system. Topics will include the basics of setup, maintenance, and best practices for using harvested rainwater in your home and garden. Learn more and register

CatchingH2O – The following events will be offered in May.

  • May 2, 10am to 4pm – Attend the 29th annual expo and tour of over a dozen properties in 5 walkable neighborhoods in Clairmont and Bay Park. CatchingH2O will be on hand to talk about  water capture systems at 11:10am at the expo, as well as tabling from 9am to 2pm. Expo site location: St. David’s Church, 5050 Milton St, San Diego.   • May 3, 9am to 11am – Rainwater Tank Installation: A Hands-On Workshop ($25 fee) – Designed for larger rainwater tanks or cistern systems of 200 gallons or more, this class will provide training on how to properly install a rainwater tank that performs well and requires minimal maintenance. Topics include practical tips, installation tricks, and lessons learned from years of field experience, as well as components that provide the best long-term durability and performance. San Diego River Park Foundation Monarch Garden Dedication & Mission Valley Garden Club – Grant Park – May 2, 9am to 11am – Attend this Monarch Garden dedication while participating in caring for beautiful native plant gardens alongside fellow nature lovers. Learn more or sign up.


South Bay Sustainable Communities Network – Farm to Shower Garden-Inspired Soap-Making Workshop – May 3, 10am to 12pm – Learn how to incorporate fresh, nutrient-rich garden ingredients into your soaps using locally grown herbs and loofah gourds. University of California Cooperative Extension’s (UCCE) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program – The following events will be offered in May.

  • Healthy Garden – Healthy Home classes – Are you new to gardening or have you always wanted to learn how to grow your own herbs and vegetables? The classes are designed to build edible plant gardening skills and control pests using products safe for your food and family. Classes are hybrid with in-person and virtual options. San Diego Botanic Garden – The following events will be offered in May.

  • May 6 through May 20, 9:30am to 12pm – Learning Labs: Watershed Wednesdays – Through an interactive watershed model, you will learn how our every action has an impact on our waterways and on the humans, animals, and plants that live in them. Offered weekly in partnership with Solana Center for Environmental Innovation. Learn more.
  • Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 10am to 12pm – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Topics vary by month and will focus on a different plant or nature-based theme. Science activities engage kids with cool hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity.   • Special Activity: Toddler Tales & Tunes in Hamilton Children’s Garden – Fridays – 10:30am to 11am – Join Grandma Kathy as she uses puppets, bells, pompoms, and much more to connect children to plants and nature in the beautiful outdoor setting at the top deck of Hamilton Children’s Garden. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR) Master Gardeners of San Diego – The following events will be offered in May where you can get science-based answers and practical advice from UCCE certified Master Gardener experts. Topics include garden planning, watering, pest control, and anything garden related.

Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars – A series of landscape and water-savings webinars will be offered in May hosted by various regional water agencies. Dates and times vary. All events will be virtual and free unless otherwise noted.

The following topics will be hosted or co-hosted by Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD). See calendar and learn more or register.

  • California Friendly & Native Plant Landscape Training (in-person workshop - Escondido) – Learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping. Topics include building healthy soil, capturing rainwater, selecting climate-appropriate and native plants, and use of high-efficiency irrigation.

  • Fire-Ready Landscapes Reduce Your Vulnerability – Learn some of the ways you can make your home less vulnerable to fires. Topics include determining key points of vulnerability, understanding the role of soil moisture balance, reviewing landscape maintenance practices for protection, and planning a fire-resistant landscape. Advance registration is required.
  • Landscape Transformation: Keep, Remove or Replace Grass – Learn how to remove your lawn and make the right moves for creating a gorgeous, watershed wise landscape. Topics include maintaining existing lawn with organic matter, removing turf without the use of chemicals, replacing it with climate-appropriate plants, and managing the big three: weeds, pests, and disease.

WaterSmart Landscape Contest – Entries accepted through May 8, 2026 – Participate in this annual competition that rewards water-efficient landscapes created by customers of participating water agencies. Be recognized for your work in water conservation and neighborhood beautification. Learn more.

Unincorporated Residents of San Diego Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and E-Waste Collection – Residents can learn about HHW disposal options. Check back for any additional community recycling events in May here.


County of San Diego Department of Public Works Compost Awareness Week Events – May 3rd through 9th (unless otherwise noted) – The following free compost and mulch giveaways will be offered in May as part of International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW). Compost and mulch are great ways to nourish your soil, conserve water, and give your landscaping a boost. This is a self-loading event, so be sure to bring your own tools, tarps, and containers. Note, materials are available while supplies last.

Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Events – The following events will be offered in May.  

  • May 2, 10am to 12pm – Raising Backyard Chickens Workshop - Fallbrook – Learn the basics and benefits of raising backyard chickens and how they can produce high-quality eggs, reduce waste, protect your garden from pests, and help save you money. Topics include local regulations for keeping backyard chickens, basic requirements for making a chicken coop, feeding and care to keep hens healthy and happy, and resources. Pre-registered attendees who are residents of Unincorporated County of San Diego will receive a free kitchen scraps container. Funded by the County of San Diego.   • May 9, 9:30am to 11am – The Wonders of Composting with Worms Workshop – Learn about the benefits of vermicomposting (composting with worms) and the importance of keeping food scraps out of the landfill. Topics include how red wiggler worms can transform food scraps into something new, what worms need to thrive, and what food scraps they like to eat. Funded by the La Jolla Kiwanis.   • May 9, 10am to 11:30amManure Composting Made Easy: Rules and Best Practices for Unincorporated Businesses and Residents – Farmers, ranchers, and livestock owners will learn low-cost options to manage their organic waste and manure while improving their existing operation. Learn the basics of manure composing, cost reductions and benefits, and details of the County’s updated zoning and permitting requirements. This workshop will also include a tour of the Fallbrook Riders compost system. Funded by the County of San Diego. Site location: Fallbrook Riders Inc., 1627 South Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook.   • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Household Pickup Service ($10 fee for people under 65; free for people 65 and over) A HHW pick-up service is being offered to residents in San Diego County. Accepted items include electronic waste, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, batteries, fuel, smoke detectors, cleaning products, paint and more. 125 pounds or 15 gallons (whichever one comes first) can be picked up at one time. Call CleanEarth at 800-714-1195 to schedule a pickup and confirm what items are accepted. Learn more.

Zero Waste San Diego Fixit Clinics – Learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away at the following Fix-It Clinics in May. Bring broken or non-working items for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Clinics hosted by SD Fixit Clinic with the help of many other zero waste partners.


South Bay Sustainable Communities Network Monthly Compost Pile Turnings – Various days, timeslots, and cities – Attend these monthly turnings of South Bay Sustainable Communities Network soil saver compost bins at select compost hub locations throughout South San Diego County. Compost hubs are also available to community members to drop off food scraps. Scroll to the bottom of home page to check calendar for hub locations and dates.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation – The following events will be offered in May.

  • Grow With Me Young Steward Program – Mondays through Thursdays in May, 10am to 11am ($$ fees vary) – Designed for younger stewards (ages 2-5) and their caregiver, this interactive, hour-long experience blends hands-on learning with opportunities to explore new activities. Together, children will discover what it means to care for and love our planet in fun, meaningful ways. Topics and activities will vary weekly. Learn more or register.
  • Registration Open Now – 2026 Summer Discovery Camps - June through August ($$ fees vary) – Discovery Camps feature hands-on, educational lessons, and activities around a central theme designated for that camp week. All camps take place outdoors in our Nature Nodes, and are filled with nature walks, animal interactions, and crafts. Camp groups are split by age ranges and capped at 12 campers per group with 1 teacher. Camp is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Register early as camps fill up quickly. Preserve Calavera Water Quality Testing – May 2, 8:30am to 11:30am – Attend to help with the bi-monthly North SD County Watershed Monitoring Program (NSDCWMP). Learn more.


Escondido Creek Conservancy Welcome to the Watershed Series! – May 2, 9am to 12pm – Enjoy nature and learn about the work the Conservancy is doing to protect special places throughout the Escondido Creek Watershed. This free monthly activity could include a gentle nature or flower walk, hiking, biking, or nature photography. Learn more or reserve a spot.


Nature Collective at San Elijo Lagoon – The following events will be offered in May.

  • May 2, 10am to 11:30am – Discovery Tour – Get a guided tour of the salt marsh, mudflats, and native plants of the San Elijo Lagoon. Learn more or reserve your spot.
  • May 9, 8:30am to 10:30am – Wildlife Tour Discover lots of waterfowl playing hide-and-seek with us among the lagoon waters. We may find mushrooms along the way. We will also visit four distinct plant communities at Harbaugh Seaside Trails. Learn more or reserve your spot.

Buena Vista Audubon – The following events will be offered in May.

  • May 3, 10am to 2pm – Fabric Art and Nature Art Sale – Attend to shop for nature-themed quilts and other artwork by over a dozen local artists in many mediums. Proceeds will further the BVAS mission. Sponsored in partnership with Preserve Calavera, Studio Ace, and Oceanside Museum of Art. Learn more.
  • May 16, 10am to 2pm – 12th Annual Endangered Species Day Spring Open House – Attend this free family event to learn about environmental topics such as endangered species, local watersheds, plastic pollution, and more. San Diego River Park Foundation – The following events will be offered in May.

  • (activities and times vary) Join San Diego River Foundation and its many partners for nine days of FREE activities that celebrate the San Diego River as a cultural, ecological, and recreational treasure. Activities include guided hikes, clean-ups, nature walks, educational opportunities, a fundraiser Walk for Wildlife and Fun Run, and more. Learn more and register for the various events
  • Water Quality Monitoring Events – Help collect data that guides river management and catches potential water quality issues early through monthly water quality sampling.

Earth Discovery Institute River Days & Spring Blooms Hike - Crestridge Ecological Reserve – May 9, 9am to 11am – Take part in the San Diego River Park Foundation's River Days by hiking at Crestridge Ecological Reserve, part of the San Diego River watershed! Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Docent-Led Lagoon Walks – Geocaching – May 16, 10am to 11:30am – Join for a docent-led tour of the lagoon’s latest recreation: a geocaching circuit that combines adventure and technology in a treasure hunt along the north shore trail. Learn more.


Center for Watershed Protection – 2026 Webcast Series: Webcast 4 – Urban Watershed Equity: Designing Inclusive and Just Stormwater Solutions – May 20, 1pm to 2:30pm Eastern Time ($$ fees vary) – This webcast will include discussions by two speakers focusing on the integration of green infrastructure and watershed planning into environmental justice communities. Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve – Junior Rangers Program Ongoing Kids’ Educational Event – Saturdays, 11am to 12pm – Kids ages 8 through 12 are invited to take part in discovering the rich heritage preserved in parks. They will participate in hands-on activities and can earn awards such as pins, certificates, and patches as they progress through the program! California Coastal Commission Climate Storytelling Contest for Middle and High School Students – Entries Open Through May 28, 5pm – Middle and high school students are invited to participate in this climate storytelling contest. The focus will be on answering how folks feel about climate change and how those feelings could lead to action? Students can choose their preferred medium to tell their story – either podcast, photo essay, or narrative essay. Learn more for guidelines and resources.
