We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in November and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.

Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can help preserve water quality for years to come. County of San Diego – Waterscape Rebate Program Rainwater Harvesting Workshop - Fallbrook – November 15, 10am

Join the County of San Diego’s Waterscape Rebate Program in Fallbrook on Saturday, November 15th at 10:00 AM for a Rainwater Harvesting Workshop. Learn how to install a rain barrel and collect rainwater for future use—a simple way to reduce pollution, save water, and support a healthy garden. Residents of unincorporated San Diego County qualify for a FREE rain barrel.

University of California Cooperative Extension’s (UCCE) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program – The following events will be offered in November.

  • November 1, 10am to 11:30am – Healthy Garden-Healthy Home Hybrid Community Workshop – Control Ants the Healthy Way: Controlling Ants in Your Home and Garden – Learn what to do when ants invade your plants and home, and how to make your environment less attractive to them. Alta Vista Botanical Garden – Kids in the Garden Classes – November 8, 10am to 12pm ($5 fee, includes entry to the Garden) – Kids and their families are invited to attend Saturday classes featuring hands-on activities, conservation lessons, and tours of the gardens. The Water Conservation Garden – The following events will be offered in November. Offered in partnership with Otay and Helix Water Districts, Sweetwater Authority, and Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.

  • November 14, 9am to 4pm – Free-Day Fridays – Attendees will receive free admission on the second Friday of every month. Activities include mini-tours, arts & crafts, community partner booths, scavenger hunts and prizes, and more. Learn more.
  • November 29, 9am to 4pm – Monthly Water District Wave-In Day – On the last Saturday of every month, free admission to the Garden is offered to customers of supporting water districts for a day of learning about sustainable living and water-wise gardening. Enjoy workshops, community partner booths, and water-wise exhibits that help you improve your individual impact on the planet. Learn more or register.

Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars – A series of landscape and water-savings webinars will be offered in November hosted by various regional water agencies. Dates and times vary. All events will be virtual and free unless otherwise noted.

  • Garden Design Workshop – Learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape. Topics include creating a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing the rainwater capture area. Offered in partnership with the City of Oceanside.
  • California Friendly & Native Plant Landscape Training Learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping. Topics include building healthy soil, capturing rainwater, selecting climate-appropriate and native plants, and use of high-efficiency irrigation. Offered in partnership with the Vallecitos Water District and Vista Irrigation District.
  • Transforming Lawns: A Sustainable Approach – Learn how to transform your yard into a beautiful, sustainable, and water-efficient landscape. Topics include selecting climate-appropriate plant palettes, planning a new landscape that thrives with less water, and exploring sustainable landscape techniques, functions, turf removal options and rebates. Offered in partnership with the Vallecitos Water District and Vista Irrigation District.

  • Break it Up! Permeable Everywhere – Learn how to create permeable hardscape options throughout the garden including walkable plants, pathways, and grading hardscape to capture rain. Topics also include how to cut existing concrete and permeable concrete's pros, cons, and maintenance.
  • Landscape Myth Busters – Learn about common landscape misconceptions including what plants really need to thrive, how to save money and time working with natural systems, and differences in irrigation systems. Offered in partnership with the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District.

San Diego Botanic Garden Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in November, 10am to 12pm – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Topics vary by month and will focus on a different plant or nature-based theme. Science activities engage kids with cool hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity. Art activities focus on projects that spark the imagination. Learn more.

City of Chula Vista Free Compost Event – November 8, 8am to 12pm – Attend this free compost pick-up event for residents of Chula Vista. Offered in partnership with Republic Services. Learn more.


I Love a Clean San Diego – The following events will be offered in November.

  • November 15, 8am to 12pm – Compost Giveaway at Los Penasquitos Ranch House – Attend this free compost pick-up event for City of San Diego residents only. Sponsored by the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department. Site location: Los Penasquitos Ranch House. Learn more or register.
  • November 16, 10:30am to 12pm – Eco-Glam Sustainable Fashion Workshop - EUSD Farm Lab –Learn how to create a conscious closet and reduce textile waste! This event features a panel Q&A with local experts in sustainable fashion and textile recycling. Topics include upcycling ideas, low waste laundry habits, secondhand shopping tips, and the environmental impacts of fast fashion. Following the panel, attendees can enjoy a clothing swap hosted by ILACSD, textile upcycling activities, and shopping from sustainable clothing and accessories vendors.   • November 19, 11am to 12pm From “Ick” to Easy: Simple Steps for Food Scrap Recycling Webinar Learn the ins and outs of the County of San Diego’s curbside organic waste recycling program! Topics include the importance of diverting organic waste from our landfills and where processed organic waste goes after collection. You’ll also learn what can be disposed of in your green bin, and tips and tricks for keeping your green bin clean. Sponsored by the County of San Diego. Learn more or register.

Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Events – The following events will be offered in November.

  • November 1, 10am to 12pm – Backyard Composting and Bokashi Basics Workshop - San Diego – Learn the basics of traditional composting and get an introduction to bokashi, a fermentation method that preserves your food scraps until you’re ready to compost them. Funded by the County of San Diego. Site host: 4S Ranch Community Garden. Learn more or register.
  • November 1, 12pm to 2pm – Natural Indigo Tie-Dye Workshop ($$ fees vary) – Get a hands-on introduction to natural dying and learn how to create one-of-a-kind upcycled garments, household goods, and accessories. Through a short presentation, participants will also learn about the impact of clothing and textile waste, and the urgent need to move towards more sustainable models in fashion.   • November 5, 12 and 13 – Food Recovery Inspection Training – California SB 1383 Compliance ($900 fee; discount for CRRA and SWANA members) – In this 2-part webinar (over 3 days), experts will present deep insights into the Edible Food Recovery aspect of California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Act SB 1383. This program allows food businesses to donate 100% of surplus edible food that would otherwise be disposed of. Day 1 introduces relevant aspects of the law and then focuses on edible food rescue requirements. Days 2 and 3 take place over two days and provide comprehensive training for conducting edible food recovery inspections in the commercial sector. Registrants who attend all 3 days of the training will receive a certificate of completion.     • November 5, 9am to 1pm – Part 1: Fundamentals of SB1383 Food Recovery - Compliance Overview. Learn about relevant aspects of the law and edible food rescue requirements. Topics include the impetus behind the law, overview of regulations, edible food recovery requirements, donation guidelines, liability, and tax benefits. This webinar addresses various perspectives including jurisdictions, food-generating businesses, food recovery organizations, haulers, and residents. Part 1 alone will not address training specific to inspections.
    • November 12 and 13, 9am to 1pm – Part 2: Inspection Training for Food Recovery. Receive comprehensive training for conducting edible food recovery inspections in the commercial sector. Topics include guidance for conducting food recovery inspections at businesses and food recovery organizations, common stumbling blocks for each business sector, inspection demonstrations, and interactive exercises.
  • November 8, 10am to 12pm – In-Ground Composting with Worms Workshop - Valley Center Learn about the benefits of vermicomposting (composting with worms) and turning food waste into a natural fertilizer for your plants. Key topics include appropriate tools, materials and steps to start a vermicompost bin, how to feed your worms, and which foods are suitable. All pre-registered attendees who are residents of unincorporated San Diego County can receive a free kitchen scraps container. Funded by the County of San Diego.   • November 15, 10am to 12pm – Backyard Composting Basics Workshop - Borrego Springs – Learn the basics of traditional backyard composting including the benefits of composting, bin options, and how to build a compost pile.   • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Household Pickup Service ($10 fee for people under 65; free for people 65 and over) A HHW pick-up service is being offered to residents in San Diego County. Accepted items include electronic waste, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, batteries, fuel, smoke detectors, cleaning products, paint, and more. 125 pounds or 15 gallons (whichever one comes first) can be picked up at one time. Unincorporated Residents of San Diego Cleanup and Waste Reduction Events – The following events will be offered in November by the County of San Diego.

  • November 1, 9am to 2pm – Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection Event - Borrego Springs – Unincorporated residents are invited to properly dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic waste. Household hazardous waste includes, but is not limited to, batteries, cellphones, computers, printers, oils, paint, and more. No business waste, tires, medication, large appliances, and more allowed. Site location: Borrego Springs High School (2281 Diegueno Rd. Borrego Springs). Learn more.
  • November 8, 8am to 12pm – Residential Waste Cleanup Event - Fallbrook – Unincorporated residents of Fallbrook can dispose of bulky items and recycle electronic waste, broken appliances, mattresses and box springs, and more. The event will also include free mulch for takeaway, paper shredding services, and will accept reusable items for donation. No household hazardous waste, tires, and construction materials allowed. Offered in partnership with the County of San Diego and EDCO. Site location: Fallbrook Union High School (2400 S Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook). Learn more.

San Diego Fixit Clinics – Learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away at the following Fix-It Clinics in November. Bring broken or non-working items for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Clinics hosted by SD Fixit Clinic with the help of many other zero waste partners.


University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources – The following events will be offered in November.

  • November 15, 8:30am to 12:30pm – Gifts from the Kitchen - San Diego County Master Food Preserver (MFP) Program (fee $40) – Celebrate the season of giving in this fun, hands-on class designed to teach you how to create delicious and beautifully packaged preserved food gifts perfect for the holidays. Learn about safe, research-based preservation techniques along with creative packaging ideas. You’ll also take home items and recipes to inspire your own gift-making at home. Learn more or register.
  • November 16, 4pm to 5pm – Ask a UC Master Food Preserver Live Q&A Webinar – A panel of volunteers specializing in freezing, dehydrating, canning, and food safety will be available to answer your questions. They will also share their tips so you can safely and successfully preserve food at home. Learn more or register.

SD Environmental Services One-Day Collection Events – City of San Diego – The following household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events will be offered in November. Learn more.

  • November 8, 9am to 1pm – Vista Del Mar Middle School, North Parking Lot (4885 Del Sol Blvd., San Diego).
  • November 22, 9am to 1pm – Balboa Park, Inspirational Parking Lot (Corner of Park Blvd. & Presidents Way).

South Bay Sustainable Communities Network – Monthly Compost Pile Turnings – Various days, timeslots, and cities – Attend these monthly turnings of South Bay Sustainable Communities Network soil saver compost bins at select compost hub locations throughout South San Diego County. Nature Collective – San Elijo Lagoon Discovery Tour November 1, 10am to 11:30am – Get a guided tour of the salt marsh, mudflats, and native plants of the San Elijo Lagoon. Learn more or reserve your spot.


Escondido Creek Conservancy Welcome to the Watershed Series! – November 1, 9am to 12pm – Enjoy nature and learn about the work the Conservancy is doing to protect special places throughout the Escondido Creek Watershed. This free monthly activity could include a gentle nature of flower walk, hiking, biking, or nature photography. Learn more or register through the ‘details’ tab.

Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve/Reserva Nacional de Investigación de Estuario del Río Tijuana. The following events will be offered in November.

  • Saturdays 11am to 12pm – Junior Rangers Program – Ongoing Kids’ Educational Event – Kids ages 8 through 12 are invited to take part in discovering the rich heritage preserved in parks. They will participate in hands-on activities and can earn awards such as pins, certificates, and patches as they progress through the program! Buena Vista Audubon – The following events will be offered in November:

  • November 9, 11am to 12:30pm – Kids’ Nature Clubhouse and Trail Exploration – School-aged children and their families are invited to complete a nature-inspired craft and explore the lagoon trail with a different focus each month. The 1/2 hour trail adventure starts from the Nature Center at 11:00am. Learn more.
  • November 24, 10am to 10:45am – Preschool Nature Storytime – Join the Nature Center for nature-themed stories for preschool children, aged 2 ½ to 5 years. There will be a story, songs, fun craft, and special theme each month. Learn more.

San Diego Coastkeeper - Watershed Watch, Mission Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program – Be part of a team of passionate individuals interested in protecting our waterways. Join San Diego Coastkeeper’s Mission Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program and participate in monthly field days to collect water samples at ten sites in Mission Bay. The following events will be offered in November.


Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation – The following events will be offered in November.

  • November 24 through 26, 9am to 3pm – Discovery Fall Camp 2025 ($$ fees vary) – Science and nature Discovery Camps feature hands-on educational lessons around a central theme designated for that camp week. All camps take place outdoors in our Nature Nodes, and are filled with nature walks, animal interactions, and crafts. Camp groups are split by age ranges and capped at 12 campers per group with 1 teacher. This camp is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Learn more or register.
  • Daily program Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 5:30pm – Preschool Playdates Outdoor Program ($$ fees vary) – All children ages 3 to 5 are invited to join the daily program for nature-themed lessons and activities. Each day will include environmental education and literacy, a craft made from recycled materials, outdoor play, and more. You can register for individual days or the entire week. Early release options are available at 1pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Topics vary by month with the November topic being Thankful for Fall. Learn more or register.

The Living Coast Discovery Center – Sweetwater Safari Hike Series – Saturdays, 11:30am to 12pm – Join the Center every Saturday to explore the Sweetwater Marsh Trail on the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Here you will learn about the history of the Marsh, salt marsh ecosystem, plants, and wildlife thriving in this protected space.
