JUNE 2025
We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in the events being held during the month of June and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.
 Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can help preserve water quality for years to come. San Diego Chapter of CNPS Show Garden – San Diego County Fair – June 11 through July 6, 11am to 10pm, Wednesdays through Sundays ($$ Fee - Fair Admission) – The San Diego Chapter of the CNPS is showcasing its Paws, Wings and Wild Things display garden to demonstrate how thoughtful design with native plants can create safe outdoor. Visitors will find pet-friendly design features, shaded seating, habitat-rich planting, and creative ideas for sharing space — from soft dog runs and cat zones to bird habitat and water features. Master Gardener Association of San Diego – Garden Walk (6 gardens) – Highlands Mobile Home Community, Santee – June 7, 1pm to 3pm – While attending this garden walk, get all your gardening questions answered by a UCCE certified Master Gardener. Urban & Community Webinar Series – Cover, Smash, Trap: Nonchemical Methods for Pest Management – June 18, 12pm to 1pm – Learn how to manage pests without pesticides using nonchemical pest management practices as alternatives to pesticides in the home and garden. Learn more or register.

Healthy Garden-Healthy Hybrid (in-person and Zoom) Community Workshops – June 21, 10am to 11:30am – Irrigation and Runoff Management - Learn about irrigation management including how to evaluate and improve your irrigation systems, avoid runoff and erosion issues, and how to customize your irrigation methods to fit your landscape. Irrigation and Water Use Efficiency – June 5, 6pm to 7pm – Learn about irrigation systems, programming controllers, why to choose drip over spray, and easy ways to conserve water.

Goodbye Grass, Hello Garden: Qualify for Rebates – June 17, 6pm to 7pm – Learn about replacing your lawn with a watershed-wise landscape, including removing turf without the use of chemicals, replacing it with climate-appropriate plantings, and how to apply for a turf replacement rebate.

Drip Irrigation Essentials – June 19, 6pm to 7pm – Learn how to save your landscape by understanding soil moisture balance, key components of a properly installed drip system, typical problems with drip and how to avoid them, and developing a successful maintenance practice.

After the Fires, Reviving a Landscape – June 18, 9am to 12pm – Learn how to plan for more fire-resistant landscapes and communities. Topics include why fires have become more urban, what happens after a massive fire, how to rebuild a more fire-resistant landscape (residential and commercial), and the importance of maintaining a good soil moisture balance. San Diego Botanic Garden Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions – Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in May, 10am to 12pm – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Topics vary by month and will focus on a different plant or nature-based theme. Science activities engage kids with cool hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity. Art activities focus on projects that spark the imagination. Learn more.

June 7, 1pm to 3pm – Opportunities To Reduce Costs and Compost Ag Waste – A demonstration of how the host ranch composts manure and orchard waste for onsite use, discussions on best management practices and potential return on investment, the workshop will also cover topics like plants for pollinators, nurturing habitats and more! June 22, 10am to 1pm – 10th Annual Sustainable Solutions Fair – City of Encinitas – Join ILACSD in partnership with the City of Encinitas for a unique celebration of all things sustainability! The event includes hands-on low waste DIY activities, a Q&A with a panel of regional experts, a clothing/home items Swap & Shop and donation drop off, an electronic waste recycling drive with Goodwill San Diego, and more. June 14, 10am to 12pm – Landscaping for Watershed Pollution Prevention Panel – El Cajon – Learn how stormwater runoff can wash away topsoil that can pollute our waterways with sediment, chemicals, and nutrients. Also, how to combat these concerns whether in your small backyard or ranch. Topics discussed by this panel include mid-scale windrow composting, compost socks and blankets, water catchment basins, and more. Funded by the County of San Diego. June 18 – Free E-Business Waste Pickup – A free monthly e-waste pick-up service is being offered to businesses in San Diego County. Register by Friday, June 13th for the Wednesday, June 18th pickup. County of San Diego Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection Event – Alpine – June 7, 9am to 2pm – Unincorporated residents are invited to properly dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic waste. Household hazardous waste includes, but is not limited to, batteries, cellphones, computers, printers, oils, paint, and more. No business waste, tires, medication, large appliances, and more allowed. Zero Waste San Diego San Diego Fix-It Clinics – Learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away. Bring broken or non-working items for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Clinics hosted by Zero Waste San Diego with the help of many other zero waste partners.
Alta Vista Botanical Garden – Kids in the Garden Classes – June 14, 10am to 12pm – ($5 fee, includes entry to the Garden) – Kids and their families are invited to attend Saturday classes featuring hands-on activities, conservation lessons, and tours of the gardens. Cities of La Mesa and Lemon Grove – Free Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event – June 14, 9am to 12:45pm – Residents of the Cities of La Mesa and Lemon Grove can dispose of their household hazardous waste such as batteries, fluorescent bulbs, electronics, paints/solvents, and more. South Bay Sustainable Communities Network – Monthly Compost Pile Turnings – Various days, timeslots, and cities – Join South Bay Sustainable Communities Network for monthly turnings of their soil saver compost bins at select compost hub locations throughout South San Diego County.  San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy & San Diego River Park Joint Powers Authority – Valley Vibes Free Family-Friendly Community Event – June 1, 11am to 3pm – Attend this event for an engaging, hands-on experience featuring 14 partner organizations showcasing the San Dieguito watershed, local wildlife, outdoor skills, art, live music, and more. Escondido Creek Conservancy – Welcome to the Watershed Series, Let’s Hike Leomar Preserve! – June 7, 9am to 12pm – Attend to learn about the work the Conservancy is doing to protect special places throughout the Escondido Creek Watershed. June 8, 11am to 12:30pm – Kids’ Nature Clubhouse and Trail Exploration – School-aged children and their families are invited to complete a nature-inspired craft and explore the lagoon trail with a different focus each month. The 1/2 hour trail adventure starts from the Nature Center at 11:00am.

June 23, 10am to 11am – Preschool Nature Storytime – Join the Nature Center for nature-themed stories for preschool children, aged 2 ½ to 5 years. There will be a story, songs, fun craft, and special theme each month. Learn more.
Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Speaker Series – Saving Our Waterways – June 14, 10am – Guest Speaker Navy McKee, CEO of Kai Pono Solutions, has invented a storm drain filtration device to work within the water infrastructure while also tracking flow rates, contaminates, and maintenance cycles. Center for Watershed Protection – 2025 Webcast Series: Webcast 5 – IDDE: From Detection to Prevention – Tracking Illicit Discharges – June 11, 1pm EDT ($159 fee non-member) – Learn how the Orange County Public Works IDDE (Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination) team relies on teamwork and partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies to help prevent, detect, track, and respond to illicit discharges in Orange County, CA. Attendees will learn how the sharing of information, and the use of technology, assist with the prevention, detection, and response to illicit discharges on a regional scale. Daily program Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 5:30pm – Preschool Playdates Outdoor Program ($$ fees vary) – All children ages 3 to 5 are invited to join the daily program for nature-themed lessons and activities. Each day will include environmental education and literacy, a craft made from recycled materials, outdoor play, and more. You can register for individual days or the entire week. Saturdays June through August, 9am to 10:30am – Summer Kids Club ($$ member fees vary) – This ‘members only’ program for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade is designed to nurture a deep appreciation for the wonders of nature, complete with engaging crafts to bring home. Each Saturday will highlight a different aspect of science, nature, or animals with the June topics being Animal Metamorphosis (6/7), Marine Biology (6/14), Going Hog Wild (6/21) and Bird Brains (6/28). Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR) – Junior Rangers Program Ongoing Kids’ Educational Event – Saturdays 11am to 12pm – Kids aged 8 through 12 are invited to take part in discovering the rich heritage preserved in parks. They will participate in hands-on activities and can earn awards such as pins, certificates, and patches as they progress through the program! The Living Coast Discovery Center – Sweetwater Safari Hike Series – Saturdays, 11:30am to 12pm – Join the Center every Saturday to explore the Sweetwater Marsh Trail on the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
