We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in September and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.
Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can preserve water quality for years to come. ILACSD Adopt-A-Beach/Adopt-A Canyon-Program, Flexible Dates/Flexible Times – Volunteer to help keep San Diego County maintained, safe, and beautiful. Run an independent beach/canyon cleanup at your chosen ‘adopted’ location at a date and time that works for you. Requirements include a minimum of three cleanups at your chosen site in one year and the reporting of detailed cleanup data to ILACSD. Learn more and adopt a location.

Keep America Beautiful 2024 Great American Cleanup – #152Pickup Challenge – March 19 Kickoff – Join Keep America Beautiful and its local affiliate I Love A Clean San Diego in their mission of picking up litter and greening up our local communities. UCCE Master Gardener Association of San Diego – The following events will be offered in September.

September 4, 12pm to 12:30pm – San Diego County Operations Center Lunch & Learn Series – Exotic Fruits. The Master Gardeners will do a half hour presentation open to the public on various gardening topics. They will convene at the demonstration garden at the center of the County Operations Center. September 14, 9am to 11am – San Diego County Seed Swap and Ask A Master Gardener Session – San Carlos Community Garden –Attend for a seed swap and to get your gardening questions answered by a UCCE certified Master Gardener. Learn more.

September 21, 9am to 3pm – Fall Plant Sale – Balboa Park. Attend Master Gardener’s traditional plant sale including CA natives, flowering plants, edible plants, herbs, and more. There will also be exhibits and demonstrations as well as birdhouses, garden art, and other items for sale. Learn more.
California Native Plant Society (CNPS) Events – September 5, 5:30pm to 6:30pm – Naturehood Monthly Gardening Webinars – Feast On Natives: Edible California Plants for Your Garden – Learn how to grow and use California native plants as food in your garden. Explore health benefits, sustainable gardening practices, and tips for seamlessly blending these unique plants into your landscape. Learn more or sign up.
University of California (UC) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program – The following events will be offered in September.

September 10, 8am to 5pm (ENGLISH); September 24, 8am to 5pm (SPANISH) – Pesticide Safety Zoom Workshop, Instructor Training (fee $300) – The Train the Trainer workshop will qualify participants to train fieldworkers and pesticide handlers under CA pesticide regulations. Learn more or register.

September 17, 8am to 5pm (ENGLISH and SPANISH) – Pesticide Safety Zoom Workshop, Train-the-Trainer Refresher (fee $100) – This workshop provides a review of the required annual training topics for fieldworkers and handlers. Learn more or register.
Water Efficient Landscape Dual Certification Program – September 12, 19, and 26, 9am to 4pm – The California Landscape Contractors Association, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the San Diego County Water Authority now offer a one-of-a-kind certification and educational opportunity for landscape professionals in Southern California. This joint effort combines the CLCA Water Management Certification Program with the Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper program to offer the landscape industry an opportunity to obtain two nationally recognized EPA WaterSense Professional Certifications with one course and one written test. These workshops are free and available only to those in select counties of Southern California within the Metropolitan Water District’s service area. Registration closes September 9th. San Diego Botanic Garden Events – The following events will be offered in September.

September 7, 4pm to 8pm – The Garden Party – (ticket fee $300) – Attend the Garden’s annual fall fundraiser to support vital science, conservation, and education programs. The evening will feature fabulous food and beverages, a live auction, and musical performances. Learn more or reserve ticket.

Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in September, 10am to 12pm – Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Topics vary by month and will focus on a different plant or nature-based theme. Science activities engage kids with cool science and hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity. Art activities focus on projects that spark the imagination. Learn more.
Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars – A series of landscape and water-savings webinars are being offered throughout August. Dates and times vary. Hosted by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. See calendar and learn more or register.

Drip Irrigation Fundamentals – Learn how to save your landscape by understanding soil moisture balance, key components of a properly installed drip system, typical problems with drip and how to avoid them, and developing a successful maintenance practice.

California-Friendly Native Plant Landscape – Learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainwater, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.

Garden Design Workshop – Learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing and siting the rainwater capture area.

Keeping Rain in the Garden – Learn how to design your yard using watershed-wise landscaping, including criteria and considerations when selecting rain capture methods such as swales, berms, cisterns, and integrating hardscapes.

Goodbye Grass, Hello Garden: Qualify for Rebates – Learn about replacing your lawn with a watershed-wise landscape, including removing turf without the use of chemicals, replacing it with climate-appropriate plantings, and how to apply for a turf replacement rebate.

Irrigation and Water Use Efficiency – Learn about irrigation systems, programming controllers, why to choose drip over spray, and easy ways to conserve water.
WaterSmart Residential Landscape and Irrigation Events – The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart Program is providing past recordings of 3-Hour Landscape Workshops. View past workshops.

September 17 through October 29, Tuesdays, 6pm to 8:30pm – Master Composter Program Fall 2024 – A free seven week Master Composter course is being offered to provide training in the art and science of composting through online demonstrations and lectures. Topics include traditional composting and vermicomposting (composting with worms) and environmental impacts, how to build a compost pile demonstration, bugs in your compost pile, soil health, and more. Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Events – The following residential and business events will be offered in September.

September 14 through October 12, 9:30am to 12:30pm – Master Composter In-Person Course ($25 fee) – City of San Diego Residents; waitlist only for non-residents – This five-week Master Composter course provides training in the art and science of composting covering topics on traditional composting and vermicomposting, Bokashi fermentation, compost bin building and troubleshooting, macrodecomposers in your compost pile, and more. Course includes lectures, demonstrations, and a tour of Miramar Greenery’s composting system. Eligible for Master Composter certification upon meeting certain requirements. September 28, 10am to 11am – Green Living Tour ($5 suggested donation) – Learn how to live a more sustainable lifestyle with some easy steps to address issues around water, waste, and soil health. You’ll see sustainability in action as you explore worm bins, grey water systems, innovative compost projects, a water-wise garden, tool lending library, and more. Learn more.

September 18 – Free E-Business Waste Pickup – A free monthly e-waste pick-up service is being offered to businesses in San Diego County. Register by Friday, September 13th for the Wednesday, September 18th Urban Corps will contact you to confirm pick-up. Offered in partnership with Urban Corps. Learn more or sign up.
San Diego Fixit Clinics – At these Fix-It Clinics, you’ll learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away. Bring broken or non-working items for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Clinics hosted by Zero Waste San Diego with the help of many other zero waste partners.

Cities of La Mesa and Lemon Grove – Free Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event – September 21, All Day (by appointment). Residents of the Cities of La Mesa and Lemon Grove can dispose of their household hazardous waste such as batteries, fluorescent bulbs, electronics, paints/solvents, and more. Daily program Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm – Preschool Playdates Program – ($$ fees vary) – All children ages 3 to 5 are invited to join the daily program for nature-themed lessons and activities. Each day will include environmental education and literacy, a craft made from recycled materials, outdoor play, and more. You can register for individual days or the entire week. Topics vary by month with the September topic being ‘California Adventure.’ Learn more or register.
The Living Coast Discovery Center – Bilingual Sweetwater Safari Hike – September 7, 11:30am to 12:30pm – Explore the Sweetwater Marsh Trail on the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge and learn about the history of the Marsh, the salt marsh ecosystem, and the plants and wildlife thriving in this protected space. San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy Lagoon Walk N Talk/Coast to Crest Trail – September 27, 9am to 12pm – Explore the diverse ecosystem of the lagoon, learn about the local wildlife, and hear from knowledgeable staff about the importance of preserving this natural habitat.
