AUGUST 2024
We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in August and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.
Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can preserve water quality for years to come. The County thanks the following beach and community cleanup event partners for their ongoing support in preventing stormwater pollution: I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD), Surfrider Foundation San Diego, San Diego Coastkeeper, San Diego River Park Foundation, Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR), San Diego Canyonlands, San Diego Audubon, Preserve Calavera, Think Blue San Diego, Green Oceanside, Friends of Rose Creek, Friends of Ruffin Canyon, ASCENDtials.org, Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, Keep America Beautiful, Recycle for Veterans, and California State Parks Foundation.

ILACSD Adopt-A-Beach/Adopt-A Canyon-Program, Flexible Dates/Flexible Times – Volunteer to help keep San Diego County maintained, safe, and beautiful. Run an independent beach/canyon cleanup at your chosen ‘adopted’ location at a date and time that works for you. Requirements include a minimum of three cleanups at your chosen site in one year and the reporting of detailed cleanup data to ILACSD. Learn more and adopt a location.
University of California (UC) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program – The following events will be offered in August.

August 6, 8am to 5pm (ENGLISH); August 20 8am to 5pm (SPANISH) – Pesticide Safety Zoom Workshop, Train-the-Trainer Refresher (fee $300) – This workshop provides a review of the required annual training topics for fieldworkers and handlers. Learn more or register.

August 15, 12pm – Urban & Community Webinar Series – Back to School Pests – With students heading back to school, now is a good time to talk about pests in schools and childcare centers. Learn about head lice, bed bugs, rats, cockroaches, and the use of disinfectant wipes and pesticide safety. Learn more or register.
Alta Vista Botanical Garden – August 10, 10am to 12pm – Kids in the Garden Classes – ($5 fee, includes entry to the Garden) – Kids and their families are invited to attend Saturday Classes featuring hands-on activities, Incredible Edibles, conservation lessons, and tours of the Gardens. UCCE Master Gardener Association of San Diego – Ask a Master Gardener Sessions – The following events will be provided in August.

California Native Plant Society (CNPS) Events – August 1, 5:30pm to 6:30pm – Naturehood Monthly Gardening Webinars – Container Gardening 101 – Join members of the CNPS Horticulture and Conservation teams to talk about native plants and pots. What plants grow best in containers? How do we help them thrive? What are good practices for irrigation and pruning? Do you need special soil? San Diego Botanic Garden Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions – Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in August, 10am to 12pm – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Topics vary by month, and the August theme is Sensational Seeds. Science activities engage kids with cool science and hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity. Art activities focus on projects that spark the imagination. Learn more.

Drip Irrigation Fundamentals – Learn how to save your landscape by understanding soil moisture balance, key components of a properly installed drip system, typical problems with drip and how to avoid them, and developing a successful maintenance practice.

California-Friendly Native Plant Landscape – Learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.

Garden Design Workshop – Learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing and siting the rainwater capture area.

Keeping Rain in the Garden – Learn how to design your yard using watershed-wise landscaping, including criteria and considerations when selecting rain capture methods such as swales, berms, cisterns, and integrating hardscapes.

Goodbye Grass, Hello Garden: Qualify for a Rebates – Learn about replacing your lawn with a watershed-wise landscape, including removing turf without the use of chemicals, replacing it with climate-appropriate plantings, and how to apply for a turf replacement rebate.

Irrigation and Water Use Efficiency – Learn about irrigation systems, programming controllers, why to choose drip over spray, and easy ways to conserve water.

Surfrider Foundation San Diego – Recycling Webinar with Solana Center for Environmental Innovation – August 7, 5pm to 6pm – Learn about the critical role recycling plays in our environment. Topics are yet to be determined, but may include a history of plastics and recycling, our society’s challenge with over consumption, proper disposal techniques, lifestyle alternatives to reduce waste, and current legislative proposals that would have an impact. August 21 – Free E-Business Waste Pickup – A free monthly e-waste pick-up service is being offered to businesses in San Diego County. Register by Friday, August 9th for the Wednesday, August 21st Urban Corps will contact you to confirm pick-up. Offered in partnership with Urban Corps. Learn more or sign up.
San Diego Fixit Clinics – At these Fix-It Clinics, you’ll learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away. Bring broken or non-working items for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Clinics hosted by Zero Waste San Diego with the help of many other zero waste partners.
City of Chula Vista – Free Compost Event – August 31, 8am to 12pm – In appreciation of the community’s efforts to recycle yard and food waste, City of Chula Vista residents are invited to pick up free compost. Bring shovels for loading, containers to fill, and don’t forget the tarps to cover your compost! Learn more.

August 3, 4pm to 7:30pm – Farm to Bay 15th Annual Fundraiser – ($120 per ticket) – Join the Living Coast Discovery Center in its efforts to support coastal wildlife, education, and sustainability! The evening will include food & beverage samplings from sustainably minded restaurants, breweries, and wineries, as well as animal encounters, a silent & live auction, musical entertainment, and sunset views on San Diego Bay! San Diego Coastkeeper Mission Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program – August 10, 9am to 12pm – Be part of a team of passionate individuals interested in protecting and restoring our waters and wilds. Daily program Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm – Preschool Playdates Program – ($$ fees vary) – All children ages 3 to 5 are invited to join the daily program for nature-themed lessons and activities. Each day will include environmental education and literacy, a craft made from recycled materials, outdoor play and more. San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy Lagoon Walk N Talk/Coast to Crest Trail – August 30, 9am to 11:30am – Explore the diverse ecosystem of the lagoon, learn about the local wildlife, and hear from knowledgeable staff about the importance of preserving this natural habitat.
