Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can preserve water quality for years to come. WaterSmart Residential Landscape and Irrigation Events The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart Program is providing the following online workshops and consultation services in June.

  • June 1, 9am to 12pm – Water & Irrigation: Utilizing a Precious Resource – Learn strategies to use our limited water sources wisely, including integrating stormwater capture elements into your landscape and conserving water through simple irrigation system retrofits. Learn more or register.
  • June 8, 9am to 12pm – Installation & Maintenance: Protecting Your Investment – Learn strategies for success when removing your turf, installing your new landscape and maintaining it, and minimizing your water use. Learn more or register.
  • Designer At Your Door Water Conservation Service This service provides an opportunity for one-on-one support from industry professionals that complements special topic WaterSmart landscape classes. California Native Plant Society (CNPS) Events – June 6, 5:30pm to 6:30pm – Naturehood Monthly Gardening Webinars – Online Tools for a Native Plant Garden – Discover how to use online tools to plan, design, and cultivate your own vibrant and sustainable native garden paradise. From plant selection to landscape design, this webinar will guide you through the process for a thriving, water-wise landscape that celebrates the beauty of California’s native plants. UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program – Urban and Community IPM Webinar – Flea Control & Diseases: Starting from Scratch June 20, 12pm to 1pm – Learn how to keep yourself and pets safe from fleas and flea-borne diseases. Learn more or register.


San Diego Botanic Garden – The following events are being offered in June.

  • June 22, 9am to 11:30am – Grow Food, End Hunger, Save the Planet – ($10 refundable deposit; includes Garden admission) Workshop takeaways include, organic seedlings, organic seed packets, garden tools, a local garden resource and planting guide, tricks of the trade for a zero-waste kitchen, and so much more!   • June 28, 2pm to 3pm – Monthly Summer Science Series – ($$ fees vary and include Garden admission) – Join the Garden each month as San Diego Botanic Garden’s staff, colleagues, and guest speakers present plant science and conservation efforts.   • Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in June, 10am to 12pm – Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Topics vary and will focus on a different plant or nature-based theme with June’s theme being ‘Pollinators.’ Science activities engage kids with cool science and hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity.   • Drip Irrigation Fundamentals – Learn how to save your landscape by understanding soil moisture balance, key components of a properly installed drip system, typical problems with drip and how to avoid them, and developing a successful maintenance practice.
  • California-Friendly Native Plant Landscape Learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.
  • Garden Design Workshop – Learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing and siting the rainwater capture area.
  • Keeping Rain in the Garden Learn how to design your yard using watershed-wise landscaping, including criteria and considerations when selecting rain capture methods such as swales, berms, cisterns, and integrating hardscapes.
  • Goodbye Grass: Qualify for a Turf Replacement Rebate Learn about replacing your lawn with a watershed-wise landscape, including removing turf without the use of chemicals, replacing it with climate-appropriate plantings, and how to apply for a turf replacement rebate.
  • Deciphering Your Irrigation Timer – Learn about your irrigation controller, including understanding irrigation’s role in maintaining a soil moisture balance, outlining the purpose of a weather-based controller, reviewing basic terminology and programming principles, identifying special functions like cycle & soak, and troubleshooting typical problems.

UCCE Master Gardener Association of San Diego – Ask a Master Gardener Sessions, San Diego County Fair – Various Days Throughout June, 11am to 5pm. Master Gardeners will be available to answer your gardening questions including garden planning, watering, pest control, and anything garden related.   • June 1, 10am to 2pm San Diego Used Oil & Oil Filter Recycling Event – Bring in a used oil filter and receive a new one for free at participating AutoZone locations including Fallbrook, Ramona, Lakeside, and Spring Valley. Funded by CalRecycle and offered in partnership with County of San Diego and I Love A Clean San Diego. Learn more.
  • June 1, 10:30am to 11:30am – To Buy or Not to Buy: The Dos and Don’ts of Sustainable Fashion Webinar – Learn how to make your closet more sustainable. Topics include textile recycling and upcycling ideas, low waste laundry routines, how to mindfully clean out your closet, thrift shopping tips and local secondhand store recommendations, and the environmental impacts of fast fashion.   • Miramar Landfill Bus Tours – City of San Diego – Get a behind-the-scenes peek on what really happens when you dispose of waste and clear up the myth of throwing something “away.” Open to City of San Diego residents only.

  • June 13, 12pm to 1pm – Step Up Your Sustainability Webinar – Learn new zero waste habits in your current routines, how to repurpose old items, and how to properly dispose of the waste you produce. City of La Mesa – Free Paper Shredding Event for La Mesa Residents – June 1, 9am to 12pm – City of La Mesa residents can dispose of unwanted paper, e-waste and more. Free self-serve mulch will also be available, and Goodwill will also be present and accepting donated reusable items. Living Coast Discovery Center Compost Workshops – The following events will be offered in June.

Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Events – The following residential and business events are being offered in June.

  • June 8, 10am to 12pm – Landscaping for Watershed Protection Panel Workshop – Rancho San Diego – A panel of experts will discuss the County of San Diego’s watershed protection and their involvement in creating a win-win outcome developing County of San Diego’s watershed protection and composting demonstration site at Ramona’s International Equestrian Center. Topics include mid-scale windrow composting, water catchment basins and rock interrupters, native plantings, and compost socks and blankets. Site location Rancho San Diego Library.   • June 8, 10am to 12pm – All About Worms Workshop – Valley Center – Learn about the benefits of vermicomposting (composting with worms) and turning food waste into nutrient-rich castings for your garden.   • June 19, 2pm to 3pm – SB 1383 Compliance – Commercial Food Waste Prevention Webinar Learn strategies to reduce food waste, save money and get ahead of state regulations impacting your business. Topics will include impacts of food waste on your business and the environment, organic waste legislation (SB 1383), practical tips and strategies to prevent food waste and save money, and guidance on food donation, liability protection, and tax incentives.   • June 19 – Free E-Business Waste Pickup A free monthly e-waste pick-up service is being offered to businesses in San Diego County. San Diego Fixit Clinics – At these Fix-It Clinics, you’ll learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away. Bring broken or non-working items for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Clinics hosted by Zero Waste San Diego with the help of many other zero waste partners.

Unincorporated San Diego Residential Cleanup Event – Spring Valley – June 15, 8am to 12pm, Monte Vista High School – Attend this residential cleanup event where unincorporated residents of San Diego can dispose of bulky items, electronics, recyclable materials, green waste, mattresses and box springs, and scrap metal. Other activities include free paper shredding, free mulch, and Goodwill will be onsite to accept donated reusable items. Event location, Monte Vista High School, Spring Valley. Offered in partnership with the County of San Diego Public Works and EDCO Disposal. Learn more.


South Bay Sustainable Communities Network – Monthly Compost Pile Turnings – Various days, timeslots and cities – Join South Bay Sustainable Communities Network for monthly turnings of their soil saver compost bins at select compost hub locations throughout South San Diego County.   • Free Stream Restoration Webinar Series. All webinars are offered at 10am Pacific Time.
    • June 4, 10am – Webinar #1 – The Evolution of Stream Restoration – Learn about the history of land use change across the U.S. and stream impacts, including forest changes; drivers of stream restoration; stream restoration through the years, and stream restoration performance. San Diego Coastkeeper Mission Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program – June 8, 9am to 12pm – Be part of a team of passionate individuals interested in protecting and restoring our waters and wilds. Join San Diego Coastkeeper’s new Mission Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program and participate in monthly field days to collect water samples at ten sites in Mission Bay. Learn more.


San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy Lagoon Walk N Talk/Coast to Crest Trail – June 13, 9am to 11am Explore the diverse ecosystem of the lagoon, learn about the local wildlife, and hear from knowledgeable staff about the importance of preserving this natural habitat. Learn more or get free tickets.


Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation Preschool Playdates Program – Daily program Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm – ($$ fees vary) – All children ages 3 to 5 are invited to join the daily program for nature-themed lessons and activities. Each day will include environmental education and literacy, a craft made from recycled materials, outdoor play and more. You can choose to register for the entire week, four days, three days, two days or one day a week. Topics vary by month with the June topic being ‘Sweet Summer.’  Learn more or register.


Living Coast Discovery Center Summer Wildlife Day Camp – Registration Now Open – Various sessions June through July, 8:30am through 4:30pm – ($$ fees vary) – Campers will spend their days learning about local wildlife, conservation, waste reduction and recycling, importance of water quality and beach cleanups, and so much more!
