County Parks’ bi-annual Warrior Hike Challenge launched in 2015 as a way to celebrate the athleticism and mental stamina that’s required to climb what’s arguably the toughest hike in San Diego County – El Cajon Mountain in El Capitan County Preserve. The hike is popular among active and retired military personnel, so we designed an event to honor them and to encourage others to try the trail with staff on site, and water and snacks along the way.
By breaking the hike into three levels, participants navigate the length of trail that best matches their individual interest and ability. Celebration stations sit at the 1-mile and 3-mile turnaround points. Extreme hikers will push their limits to climb to the summit for a nearly 12-mile trek through the scenic, undulating preserve. Volunteers are needed to staff the check-in area and celebration stations - details in the "Fun Flyers" section below.
The Warrior Hike Challenge is free, and there is no need to RSVP in advance. Learn more at sdparks.org/warriorhike
NOTE: Though the event is open to hikers of all ages and dogs are welcome (on leash), we encourage all guests to consider the demands of the challenge and the heat of this unshaded trail when selecting trail buddies.
