We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in October and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.

Ongoing beach and community cleanups help protect the County’s waterways from stormwater pollution and can preserve water quality for years to come. UCCE Master Gardener Association of San Diego – The following events will be offered in October.

  • October 4, 12pm to 12:30pm – Monthly Lunch & Learn Tour of Demonstration Garden – The San Diego Master Gardeners will do a half hour public presentation on various gardening topics at the County Operations Center Demonstration Garden. Bring your lunch. Learn more.
  • October 14, 8am to 3:30pm – Master Gardeners Fall Festival – Celebrate 40 years of Master Gardeners in San Diego with a full day of lectures, marketplace, hands-on demonstrations, informational booths, and much more. Classes will address current topics for gardening in San Diego. Learn more.

California Native Plant Society (CNPS) – The following events will be offered in October.

  • October 5, 5:30pm to 6:30pm – Naturehood Monthly Gardening Webinars – Native Gardening 101: FAQs for the Native Plant Garden – Explore some of the most urgent questions that native plant gardeners have. WaterSmart Residential Landscape and Irrigation Events – The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart Program is providing the following online workshops and consultation services during the month of October.

  • October 7, 9am to 12pm – Plants: Inspiring Choices for Our Region – Learn about which plants to use in designing a low-water-use landscape and why some are more water-efficient than others. Learn more or register.

University of California Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program – The following events on pesticide use and safety will be offered during the month of October.

  • Master Gardener Training Webinar Series, 2:30pm to 4:30pm – Co-sponsored by the San Luis Obispo County Agricultural Commissioner's Office and University of California Cooperative Extension - San Luis Obispo. Learn more about the series.
    • October 10 – Safe Use of Pesticides for Maintenance Gardeners – Topics for this webinar include personal protective equipment (PPE) and selection of proper PPE, reading pesticide labels, pesticide handler and employee safety, pesticide container requirements, and pesticide storage and transport requirements. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens Fall Fun Festival – October 14, 10am to 3pm – This year’s festival includes a plant sale, kids’ crafts and activities, craft vendors, live music, and Scarecrow Contest for scarecrows constructed at home. Pick up scarecrow supplies in advance! Food will also be available for sale. Learn more.

The Water Conservation Garden – The following garden event and consultation services will be offered in October.

  • October 18, 9:30am to 10:30am Lil’ Sprouts Storytime with Ms. Smarty-Plants – Join Ms. Smarty-Plants™ on the 3rd Wednesday of every month for a featured story followed by a nature craft. Storytime is free with Garden Admission. Registration will close on Monday, October 16th. Learn more or register.
  • October Landscape Design On-Line Consultation Sessions – appointment times and fees vary – Receive helpful advice from professional landscape designers and architects on how to make changes to your landscape, incorporate water-wise plants and materials, qualify for a rebate, or obtain guidance for installing a new water efficient landscape. San Diego Botanic Garden – The following events are being offered in October. 

  • Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in October, 10am to 12pm Monthly SAPLinGS Sessions – Children are invited to join for Science, Art, and Play in Garden Spaces (SAPLinGS) activities. Each month the focus will be on a different plant or nature-based theme. Science activities engage kids with cool science and hands-on learning that stimulates curiosity. Art activities focus on projects that spark the imagination. Scroll to October calendar for specific SAPLinGS dates of interest and to learn more.
  • October 12, 10am to 12pm – Succulent Pumpkin Workshop ($$ fees vary and include Garden admission) – Participants will create their own pumpkin by topping it with moss and succulent cuttings that will last for months. Registration closes on October 5th. Learn more or register.
  • October 14, 2pm to 4pm – Fantasy Succulent Pumpkin Arrangement Workshop ($$ fees vary and include Garden admission) – Learn the entire process of creating your very own beautiful living centerpiece of art.   • October 27, 2pm to 3pm – Monthly Summer Science Series – Join the Garden each month as plant science and conservation efforts are presented by San Diego Botanic Garden’s staff, colleagues, and guest speakers. Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars – A series of landscape and water-savings webinars are being offered throughout the month of October. Dates and times vary. Hosted by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. See calendar and learn more or register

  • California-Friendly Native Plant Webinar Learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.
  • Rainwater Harvesting Learn how to design your yard using watershed-wise landscaping including criteria and considerations when selecting rain capture methods such as swales, berms, cisterns, and integrating hardscapes.
  • Irrigation & Water Use Efficiency – Learn how to design a yard using the principles of watershed wise landscaping. Topics include overview of an irrigation system, programming a controller, why drip over spray, and easy ways to conserve water.
  • Goodbye Grass: Qualify for a Turf Replacement Rebate Learn about replacing your lawn with a watershed-wise landscape, including removing turf without the use of chemicals, replacing it with climate-appropriate plantings, and how to apply for a turf replacement rebate.
  • Garden Design Workshop – Learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing and siting the rainwater capture area.
  • Drip Irrigation Fundamentals – Learn how to save your landscape by understanding soil moisture balance, key components of a properly installed drip system, typical problems with drip and how to avoid them, and developing a successful maintenance practice.
  • Turf: Remove, Replace, or Maintain Organically Learn how to design your yard using principles of watershed-wise landscaping including removing your lawn without chemicals, building healthy soil, and selecting climate-appropriate and water-wise plants.
  • Deciphering Your Irrigation Controller – Learn about your irrigation controller including understanding irrigation’s role in maintaining a soil moisture balance, outlining the purpose of a weather-based controller, reviewing basic terminology and programming principles, identifying special functions like cycle & soak, and troubleshooting typical problems.

15th Annual WaterSmart Innovations Conference 2023 – October 3-5, Las Vegas, 7am to 5pm ($$ fees vary) This annual conference will highlight the programs, tools and water-efficiency technologies and strategies others have used to educate customers, employees, and future water professionals about the importance of conservation and water efficiency. This year’s format offers professional programs, pre-show workshops, post-show technical tours, poster sessions, and an expansive exhibit hall. Topics include advancing efficient products, drought and water loss management, landscaping, marketing and outreach, and more. Learn more or register.

San Diego Coastkeeper Seaside Soiree – October 4, 5:30pm ($ fee) – Join San Diego Coastkeeper for their annual celebration of clean water. This event brings together more than 250 environmental advocates, community leaders, decision-makers and elected officials, donors, key stakeholders, and partners to reflect on the past year’s successes in advancing the protection and restoration of clean, abundant water across San Diego County. Tijuana River Estuary – The following events will be offered during the month of October.

  • October 7, 10am to 2pmWatershed Youth Art Build – Celebrate Tijuana River Action Month (TRAM) through art, advocacy, and action.  Open to all youth in 6th-12th grades. Space is limited. Learn more or register.
  • October 21, 10am to 11am – Saturday Speaker Series – Estuary experts (TBD) will engage the community in a variety of topics related to the Tijuana Estuary and its watershed on the 3rd Saturday of every month. Topics to be determined. Learn more or register.

I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) Fall Social – October 12, 5:30pm to 8pm – Join ILACSD for their Fall Social in supporting their environmental programs throughout San Diego. The event features live music, awards, food, drinks, opportunity drawings, a silent auction, and more! Learn more.

San Diego River Park and Conservancy 14th Annual River Valley Fest – October 15, 4pm to 7pm ($$ fees vary) –This year's fundraiser theme, "Wings of Majesty," celebrates the San Dieguito River Park's role in providing vital habitat and resources for numerous birds at the San Dieguito Lagoon and along the watershed. Funds raised will help organize engagement events, habitat restoration, trail construction, outreach, and community science activities. Learn more or reserve tickets.

 Center for Watershed Protection – 2023 Webcast Series: Webcast 8 – Methods to Address Pollution Sources from Municipal Practices – October 25, 10am to 11:30am ($159 fee) – This webcast focuses on successful chloride source reduction initiatives in municipal settings including training for operations and maintenance personnel, encouraging community-wide public buy-in, facilitating more advanced maintenance practices, and even implementing source reduction by design. Green Oceanside Events – The following dump and disposal events will be offered in October.

  • Bi-Annual Donation and Landfill Weeks – The City of Oceanside, in partnership with Waste Management, offers bi-annual donation and landfill weeks to single-family and multi-family residents to divert material from the landfill and properly dispose of items beyond reuse or repair. See calendar for donation and large item landfill pick up dates.
  • October 21, 9am to 12pm – Fall Dump Day. Dispose of household goods and furniture that are beyond reuse and repair, or even illegally dumped junk at home or in your neighborhood. Bring items to the Fall Dump Day event at John Landes Resource Center. Multiple dumpsters will be provided, and e-waste recycling services will also be available. Learn more.

I Love a Clean San Diego (ILACSD) Waste Reduction Events – The following waste reduction events are being offered in October.

  • October 5, 4pm to 6pm – Shoe and Embroidery Workshop – Learn how to stitch fun designs into your old fabric shoes and make them look new again! Materials to fix broken soles and holes in your shoes will also be provided. Learn more or register.
  • October 7, 9am to 1pm – Sustainable Saturday at Rancho Santa Fe Library – Join ILACSD for a morning of activities focused on waste reduction to help us all be sustainable. The day includes a Litter Clean Up (9am to 11am) around the Rancho Santa Fe Community and Clothing Swap (10am to 1pm) where you can bring gently used clothing items to exchange them for other items at no cost.   • October 17, Celebrate Sustainably: Zero Waste Holidays, Parties, and Events Webinar – Learn how to enjoy all of life’s celebrations without creating waste! Includes low- and no-waste gift ideas, easy DIY decorations for different types of events, where to best dispose of the waste we create after the holidays and large gatherings, and ways to reduce the amount of food waste from big holiday meals.   • October 28, 9am to 1pm – MLK Spooky Sweep N Swap – Join ILACSD for a morning of activities to celebrate Halloween and help us all be sustainable. The day includes a Litter Clean Up (9am to 11am) at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park and Tote Bag Craft and Clothing Swap (10am to 1pm). Craft your own sustainable tote or trick-or-treat bag made from upcycled t-shirts, swap out last year’s Halloween costume for a sustainable fresh look, and bring gently used clothing items to exchange them for other items at no cost. Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Events – The following residential and business events are being offered in October.

  • October 7, 10am to 12pm – Backyard Composting and Bokashi Basics Workshop – Rancho Santa Fe – Learn the basics of traditional composting and get an introduction to bokashi, a fermentation method that will enable you to compost all your food waste, including meat, dairy, and liquids, allowing fresh materials to be preserved and composted at your leisure.   • October 14, 10:30am to 12pm – Miramar Greenery to You: Compost, Mulch and Wood Chips – Valencia Park – Learn about the City of San Diego-operated Miramar Greenery composting facility, the compost process, and environmental benefits. Also includes information on how compost can help you save money, time, and resources, and how you can easily get compost, mulch, and wood chips for your garden, landscape, or farm. If you’re a City of San Diego resident, you can pick up 2 cubic yards of compost and 4″ mulch from the Greenery for free with proof of residency!   • October 21, 1pm to 3pm – All About Worms Workshop – Lakeside – Learn about the benefits of vermicomposting (composting with worms) and turning food waste into nutrient-rich castings for your garden. Topics include appropriate tools and materials, steps to start a vermicompost bin, how to feed your worms and which foods are suitable, troubleshooting and maintaining your worm bin, and harvesting and using finished castings.   • October 25, 6pm to 7pm – Midscale Composting with Windrows Webinar – Learn about mid-scale composting for farms and ranches with significant quantities of organic materials, including manure. Topics include benefits of composting, basics of windrow composting, manure management for large livestock ranches, and permit considerations. An actual windrow compost pile build will be demonstrated through a virtual visit to Ramona’s International Equestrian Center.   • Free E-Business Waste Pickup – October 18 – A free monthly e-waste pick-up service is being offered to businesses in San Diego County. San Diego Fixit Clinics – Learn how to reduce waste by fixing things instead of throwing items away at the following Fixit Clinics offered in October. Bring your broken, non-working items—electronics, appliances, computers, toys, bicycles, clothes, and more—for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. Workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you take apart and troubleshoot your item will be provided. Hosted by Zero Waste San Diego.

  • October 21, 10am to 1pm – Halloween SD Fixit Clinic at Carlsbad. Halloween clinic includes family-friendly activities such as DIY costume crafting and Halloween headbands, costume repair and swapping, and holiday lighting and battery recycling. Learn more and RSVP.

SD Environmental Services One-Day Collection Events – City of San Diego –The following one-day household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events will be held during the month of October. Learn more.

San Diego Audubon Composting with Worms Workshops – Learn about worm composting during this two-part series:

  • October 19, 6:30pm to 8pm – Part 1: Composting with Worms Zoom Session – Learn the basics of how worm composting works, how to build a bin, and what to do with castings. Learn more or register.
  • October 21, 9:30am to 11am – Part 2: Composting with Worms Live Session – Anstine Audubon Preserve –Learn how to build simple worm bins out of paint buckets. Learn more or register.

The Living Coastal Discovery Center Compost Workshops – Every Sunday in October, 2pm to 3pm Learn the basics on how to start your own compost pile and turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil by attending these on-site workshops, free with admission. South Bay Sustainable Communities Network – The following events will be offered during the month of October.

  • Monthly Compost Pile Turnings – various days, timeslots and cities – Join South Bay Sustainable Communities Network for monthly turnings of their soil saver compost bins at select compost hub locations throughout South San Diego County.   • October 29, 3pm to 4:30pm – Worm Bin Workshop 101 – City of Chula Vista – Set up your very own worm bin while learning how to take care of your worms, how to make worm tea, and the benefits of having a worm bin. San Diego River Park and Conservancy 14th Annual River Valley Fest – October 15, 4pm to 7pm ($$ fees vary) –This year's fundraiser theme, "Wings of Majesty," celebrates the San Dieguito River Park's role in providing vital habitat and resources for numerous birds at the San Dieguito Lagoon and along the watershed.
