On Wednesday, Aug. 30, County officials broke ground on new sports courts, a dog park, seating and accessible paths at Waterfront Park in downtown San Diego. Watch the video here.
The Department of Parks and Recreation is repurposing the underutilized northeast corner of the park – transitioning a 1.5-acre garden into a tree-lined active recreation zone.
Amenities will include two pickleball courts, a basketball court, a dog park with agility equipment, a drinking fountain with pet bowl, a five-feature exercise station, table tennis, shaded seating, site lighting and accessible pathways. Approximately half an acre of enhanced garden area will remain, and new trees and plants will be added for ambiance and to buffer sound.
Construction will continue through next year, with the active recreation features opening summer 2024. For more information, view coverage of the groundbreaking event, or follow project updates on sdparks.org.

Have you tried the trail?
From late summer to early fall, DPR opens a 6-mile out-and-back trail in a secluded part of the Ramona Grasslands, named the Old Survey Road 97 Trail. It's open Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 15, from 8 a.m. until sunset, and only to visitors who secure a temporary permit. Here's how to get one. Be sure to tour the Nature Discovery Table to view skins, pelts, skulls and teeth from animals that live nearby!

It's almost time for Hawktober!
Coming soon in October, we’ll be hosting over a dozen live birds of prey shows at parks across San Diego. Meet hawks, falcons, owls and other animal ambassadors in this very special annual series led by County Park Rangers. See what our resident raptors look like up close while learning about where they live, what they eat, how they survive. More information will be shared in our next e-newsletter.

To encourage more people to spend quality time outside – wherever and whenever they can – we're partnering with Nature Unplugged to host ranger-led hikes during their October 2023 Hike-a-Thon.
The event has a dual purpose: To encourage people to fully experience nature, and to raise funds for Nature Unplugged’s scholarship and subsidy program for organizations and communities in need.
Participation is optional and mileage is calculated Oct. 1 – 31 via trail application. Learn more at natureunplugged.com.
A Hike-A-Thon Kick-off Event has also been scheduled from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Los Penasquitos Ranch House, located at 12122 Canyonside Park Drive, San Diego.
