Every day is a great day to be outdoors when it comes to San Diego County Parks and Recreation. Are you ready for an adventure? We can help with that. Here are some ideas for the month of September! |
|
There are many job classifications within the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation. Some staff work in the field, like volunteers, Park Maintenance Workers and Supervising Park Rangers. Others are stationed in an office environment, for example, our Community and Teen Center staff and Human Resources and Finance representatives. There is room to grow no matter what your title and where you work - not to mention regular opportunities to advance within the County workforce. Learn more at sdparks.org.

DID YOU KNOW?
The North Coast Region of the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation encompasses five major properties between Oceanside and Solana Beach: Guajome Regional Park, Rancho Guajome Adobe, San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and Nature Center, San Dieguito County Park and the San Diego Botanic Garden which is leased and operated by another agency. Additional properties include Val Sereno, Gopher Canyon, Diamond Trail and Magdalena Ecke County Preserves.
Teamwork is essential to maintaining, beautifying and offering programs in these parks. Staff work internally and with partners like California Center for the Arts Escondido, California Fish and Wildlife, Miracle League, Nature Collective, San Diego County Libraries, the San Dieguito River Park Foundation and San Elijo Water Campus, to name a few. Below are some recently completed projects.
- Last fiscal year, this region supported the County's Climate Action Plan by planting 662 trees!
- A fully accessible trail was updated at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, along with an ADA lookout point.
- With co-lead Nature Collective, San Elijo staff have been welcoming more than 1,000 5th graders every year—transportation provided.
- Sewer upgrades at Guajome Regional Park made it possible to transition 33 RV campsites to include full hookups.
- June marked the completion of the I-5 expansion project, featuring railroad double-tracking, trail connections and a massive restoration and wildlife protection effort at San Elijo Lagoon.
THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO, THIS YEAR AND BEYOND:
Among other projects, Guajome Regional Park will soon have an ADA cabin, the bridges and towers on San Dieguito County Park’s Activity Hill will be updated, and a Wildlife Conservation Board grant (made possible through Nature Collective and other regional partners) will help will help fund restoration of 89 acres of riparian habitat in Val Sereno County Preserve and San Elijo Lagoon – treating and/or removing 150 non-indigenous tree species, maximizing water availability and climate resilience in the Escondido Creek basin and greater San Dieguito watershed, and reducing regional fire risk.
WANT TO GET INVOLVED?
The San Dieguito Community Planning Group meets at 7 p.m., the second Thursday of every month at the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Station. Attendance is free and topics include regional priorities, funding, major maintenance, construction projects and recreation opportunities.
Inside the Fall/Winter edition of our Program Guide are dozens of free activities that are sure to please park visitors of all ages, interests and abilities. Programs are planned and led by park staff – showcasing their individual areas of expertise and the wow-factors that exist within each diverse park location. We encourage you to peruse this publication, attend a program, plan a play day and tell us what we can do to improve your park experience. We look forward to sharing the ‘upside of outside’ with you!
