February 2022
We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in February and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.
I Love A Clean San Diego Community Cleanups – Several in-person neighborhood cleanups are being offered in February to divert litter from their respective watersheds.

February 5, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Pine Valley Community Litter Cleanup – Attend the kick-off at the cleanup site at 9am and then collect trash from around the Pine Valley community to divert litter from the Tijuana watershed. Learn more or register.

February 10, 3pm to 5pm – Sunset Sweep: Hollywood Canyon Community Cleanup – Join I Love A Clean San Diego, San Diego Canyonlands, and Think Blue for a litter cleanup in Hollywood Canyon community. Attend the kick-off at the cleanup site at 3pm and then get out there to beautify your canyon neighborhood and divert trash from the San Diego Bay watershed. Learn more or register.

February 12, 10am to 12pm – Cupid’s Cleanup 2022 with Bay City Brewing Company – Join Love A Clean San Diego, Bay City Brewing Company, and Think Blue for a Valentine’s weekend litter cleanup in the Point Loma neighborhood to divert litter from the San Diego River watershed . Attend the kickoff at 10am for a talk about our watersheds and recycling right, then grab supplies and help clean up the neighborhood! Learn more or register.

February 19, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Rancho San Diego Community Litter Cleanup – Attend the kick-off at the cleanup site at 9am and then collect trash from around the Rancho San Diego community to divert litter from the Sweetwater watershed. Learn more or register.

San Diego River Park Foundation River Cleanups and Water Quality Monitoring Events – Several river cleanups and water quality monitoring events are being offered in February.

Saturday River Rescue Cleanups – February 5, 12, 19, and 26, 9am to 12pm – Come out and assist with river cleanups and support a healthy river while interacting with a group of like-minded people! Water Quality Monitoring Events – Come join the RiverWatch team in various locations to see how they monitor the water quality of the San Diego River.
Surfrider San Diego Beach Cleanups – Join the San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation in its ongoing beach and neighborhood cleanups. Meet at the designated locations below and look for the blue Surfrider tent.

Ongoing – Solo Cleanups – Participate in safe, physically distant ‘solo’ cleanups on your own – at the beach, in your neighborhood, at your local park – or anywhere in your watershed. Learn more about solo cleanup guidelines, how to tally your trash cleanup activity, and how you can make a difference in preventing trash from reaching the beach in the first place.

February 19, 9am to 11am – Imperial Beach Cleanup – Help with a beach and street cleanup in Imperial Beach. Meet at The Spirit of Imperial Beach Statue and look for the blue Surfrider tent! Learn more.
Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve – Friday Stewardship Sessions – February 4, 11, 18, and 25, 9am to 12pm – Join stewardship volunteers on Fridays in February in caring for the resources of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve by establishing, restoring, and maintaining the native plant gardens and habitat, removing graffiti and litter, and helping to clean up the beaches. San Diego Coastkeeper Six Cleanup Challenge – Form a group and participate in the Six Cleanup Challenge to positively impact communities and outdoor spaces up and down the watershed. Pick up trash from two challenge sites in three categories – coastal, inland, and urban – and receive a certificate of completion and appreciation packet as a prize. WaterSmart Residential Landscape and Irrigation Online Webinars and Training – The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart Program is providing the following free online events during the month of February. These classes are sponsored in part by Member Agencies and the County of San Diego.

February 26, 9am to 12pm – Water & Irrigation: Utilizing a Precious Resource – Learn strategies to use our limited water sources wisely, including integrating stormwater capture elements into your landscape and conserving water through simple irrigation system retrofits. Learn more or register.
University of California Cooperative Extension’s (UCCE) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) - Healthy Garden – Healthy Home Program – UCCE IPM’s Healthy Garden Healthy Home Program is offering free online webinars in February that will help improve your garden, manage pests, and conserve water.

February 12, 10am to 11:30 – Irrigation and Runoff Management – Learn about irrigation management including how to evaluate and improve your irrigation systems, avoid runoff and erosion issues, and how to customize your irrigation methods to fit your landscape. Learn more or register.

University of California (UC) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) – The UC IPM program is offering a variety of online pest management and pesticide safety webinars during the month of February.

Rose Creek Native Plant Garden Work Party – February 12, 9am to 11am – Join the Friends of Rose Creek to work on The Nature School’s native plant interpretive garden behind Rose Creek Cottage in Pacific Beach. Help weed, water, remove invasive non-native plants and trash, and plant native species. Easy one to two hour project and great for children of all ages. Learn more.

February 16, 3pm to 4pm – That’s Swale Online Class – Landscape contractors, Wild Made Design, will show you techniques to ensure your landscape can handle and harvest as much water as possible through slowing, spreading, and sinking water through earthwork applications like swales and basins. Turf: Remove, Replace, or Maintain Organically – Learn how to design your yard using principles of watershed-wise landscaping including removing your lawn without chemicals, building healthy soil, and selecting climate-appropriate and water-wise plants.

Drip Irrigation Maintenance & Trouble Shooting – Learn how to save your landscape by understanding soil moisture balance, key components of a properly installed drip system, typical problems with drip and how to avoid them, and developing a successful maintenance practice.

February 16, 6pm to 7:30pm – Producing Compost On-Site with the Healthy Soils Program Webinar – This webinar for Healthy Soils Program awardees will cover how to get started composting or improve your existing compost system while meeting Healthy Soils Program requirements. Topics include the benefits, considerations, and options for creating compost on your cropland, orchard, vineyard, or rangeland, and how it fits into your funded project. On-Site and Virtual Compost Workshops – The Living Coastal Discovery Center and City of Chula Vista are offering the following compost workshops in February where participants will learn the basics on how to start their own compost pile and turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil. San Diego Audubon – Love Your Wetlands Day – February 5, 10am to 4pm – Join the UC Natural Reserve System and the San Diego Audubon Society for Love Your Wetlands Day at the Kendall Frost Marsh Reserve to learn about, explore and protect Mission Bay's wetlands! What to Know About H2O Webinar – Money Savings Rebates from the City of San Diego – February 8, 4pm to 5pm – Join I Love A Clean San Diego in partnership with Think Blue San Diego for this webinar focused on learning about where our water comes from, some easy tips for conserving water, and how to prevent pollution in our neighborhoods and local waterways.
