Virtual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events

June 2021

We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in June and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.

I Love A Clean San Diego VIRTUAL Community Cleanups

Several VIRTUAL community cleanups are being offered during the month of June. Participants will collect trash around their communities to divert litter from their respective watersheds. Participate in these cleanups to protect the environment as well as each other, and ‘walk-your-block’ and neighborhoods with your family and neighbors.

  • June 1, 9am to 12pm – Zero Waste Cleanup Kits! Volunteer Opportunity in Kearny Mesa – Help support I Love A Clean San Diego in prepping zero waste cleanup kits for use during future cleanup events! Volunteers will help clean out buckets, label buckets, and litter grabbers to get these cleanup kits ready to go for our San Diego Community. Learn more and donate.
  • June 5, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Casa De Oro Community VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – Join the Zoom kick-off call at 9am and then collect trash from around the Casa De Oro community to divert litter from the San Diego Bay watershed. Learn more or register.
  • June 12, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Mt. Helix Community VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – Join the Zoom kick-off call at 9am and then collect trash from around the Mt. Helix community to divert litter from the San Diego Bay watershed. Learn more or register.
  • June 19, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Spring Valley VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – Join the Zoom kick-off call at 9am and then collect trash from around the Spring Valley community to divert litter from the San Diego Bay watershed. Learn more or register.


 

Ongoing – Solo Cleanups

Organized by Surfrider San Diego, participate in safe, physically distant ‘solo’ cleanups on your own – at the beach, in your neighborhood, at your local park – or anywhere in your watershed. Learn more about solo cleanup guidelines, how to tally your trash cleanup activity, and how you can make a difference in preventing trash from reaching the beach in the first place.

WaterSmart Residential Landscape and Irrigation Online Programs

The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart program is providing free residential and professional landscaper webinars on landscape design and irrigation management during the month of June and throughout 2021. These classes are sponsored in part by Member Agencies and the County of San Diego.

  • June 9, 5:30pm to 8:30pm – Water & Irrigation: Utilizing a Precious Resource – Learn strategies to use our limited water sources wisely, including integrating stormwater capture elements into your landscape and conserving water through simple irrigation system retrofits. Learn more or register.
  • June 23, 5:30pm to 8:30pm – Installation & Maintenance: Protecting Your Investment – Learn strategies for success in removing your turf and installing and maintaining your landscaping. Learn more or register.

 

San Diego Horticultural Society – June 14, 6pm to 7pm Gardening in Summer-Dry Climates on Zoom

Join Saxon Holt, photojournalist and sole photographer of more than 30 garden books, for a discussion on gardening in summer-dry climates. Learn more and access Zoom link.


 

University of California (UC) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program – The UC IPM program is offering a variety of pest management and pesticide safety program webinars during the month of June.

  • Pesticide Safety Program: June 8, 3pm to 4pm (ENGLISH); June 22, 3pm to 4pm (SPANISH) – Compliance Cheat Sheet (fee $40) – Learn about California-specific requirements NOT found on labels. Learn more about the webinar series or register for English or Spanish webinars.
  • Pest Management Program: June 17, 1pm to 2pm – IPM for Rodents – Offered through the Urban & Community Statewide IPM program. This webinar will cover IPM for Rodents presented by Dr. Niamh Quinn, Human-Wildlife Interactions Advisor for Orange, Los Angeles, and San Diego Counties. Learn more or register.

 

Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars

A series of landscape and water-savings webinars are being offered throughout the month of June. Dates and times vary. Hosted in part by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Several webinars are being offered in Spanish this month. See calendar and learn more or register.

  • Drip Irrigation Maintenance & Trouble Shooting – Learn how to save your landscape by understanding soil moisture balance, key components of a properly installed drip system, typical problems with drip and how to avoid them, and developing a successful maintenance practice.
  • Deciphering Your Irrigation Controller – Learn about your irrigation controller including understanding irrigation’s role in maintaining a soil moisture balance, outlining the purpose of a weather-based controller, reviewing basic terminology and programming principles, identifying special functions like cycle & soak, and troubleshooting typical problems.
  • Irrigation & Water Use Efficiency – Learn how to design a yard using the principles of watershed wise landscaping. Topics include overview of an irrigation system, programming a controller, why drip over spray, and easy ways to conserve water.
  • Turf: Remove, Replace, or Maintain Organically (ENGLISH AND SPANISH) – Learn how to design your yard using principles of watershed-wise landscaping including removing your lawn without chemicals, building healthy soil, and selecting climate-appropriate and water-wise plants.
  • Garden Design Workshop (ENGLISH AND SPANISH) – Learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing/siting a rainwater capture area.
  • California-Friendly Native Plant Webinar (ENGLISH AND SPANISH)Learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.
  • Compost: Building the Soil Sponge – Get an introduction to the Soil Food Web and learn how to make your own compost and other amendments for your garden.

I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) Waste Reduction Webinars – Learn how to reduce waste at your home during these June webinars.

  • June 1, 11am to 12pm Zero Waste Bathroom Webinar – City of San Diego (ENGLISH); June 3, 11am to 12pm (SPANISH) – Learn how to reduce bathroom waste bulk products, identify specific low-waste swaps, review how to recycle right, and share DIY recipes.   • June 12, 9am to 1pm – 6th Annual Zero Waste Fair – City of Encinitas – Learn about a variety of topics related to sustainability and how to actively work toward a zero-waste lifestyle. Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Webinars/Training – Several residential and business waste reduction events are being offered during June. Various partners include the County of San Diego Recycling, Urban Corps, City of Encinitas, and the Water Conservation Garden.

  • June 3, 10, 17, 24, 6pm to 7 pm – Vermicomposting Webinar Series – This 4-part free webinar series will cover a variety of topics on vermicomposting.
    • June 3 – Construct Your Own Worm Bin, Part 1 – Learn how to construct an effective bin for composting food waste at home with red wiggler worms. Learn more or register.
    • June 10 – Getting Started with Vermicomposting, Part 2 – Learn how to establish a vermicomposting system and turn food waste into nutrient-rich castings for plants or garden beds. Learn more or register.
    • June 17 – From Care to Castings, Part 3 – Learn how to care for your worms through the seasons and enjoy the beautiful, finished castings they create. Learn more or register.

  • June 9, 16, 23, 4pm to 5pm – Virtual Family Master Composter Course ($25/family fee) – This 3-week course for kids and adults will prepare your "green team" to successfully compost at home. Learn about the science of composting, what can be composted & tools needed, starting and maintaining a traditional compost pile, and using compost in the garden. Learn more or register.

  • June 9, 6pm to 7pm – Recycling Organics at Your Curb – City of Encinitas – Learn about EDCO’s new organics curbside pickup program. Topics include information about the region's new anaerobic digester facility and California organics recycling law, what to put in each bin, how the material will be collected, and prevention tips and tricks to reduce organic waste.   • June 16, 10am to 2pm (scheduled pickups) – Free E-Business Waste Pickup – Coastal North County Cities – A FREE e-waste pick-up service is being offered to businesses in coastal North County cities. Sign up by Friday, June 11th for the Wednesday, June 16th pick-up. Learn more or register.
  • June 22, 2pm to 3pm – Ask a Composting Specialist – Get answers to all of your traditional backyard composting questions during this virtual 1-hour Q&A session with Solana Center's knowledgeable educators! Offered in partnership with the Water Conservation Garden. Learn more or register.

 

On-Site and Virtual Compost Workshops - City of Chula Vista

The Living Coastal Discovery Center and City of Chula Vista are offering the following compost workshops where participants will learn the basics on how to start their own compost pile and turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil. Learn more or register.

June 17, 10am to 12pm (rescheduled from May 6th) – UC Davis Production Agricultural E-Learning Workshop Session #1An Update on Agricultural Water and the Produce Safety RuleUC Davis has rescheduled part one of its three-part e-learning session on production agricultural water.
