Virtual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events

February 2021

We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in February and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.

I Love A Clean San Diego Virtual Community Cleanups

Several VIRTUAL litter cleanups are being offered during the month of February. Participants will collect trash around their communities to divert litter from their respective watersheds. Participate in these cleanups to protect the environment as well as each other, and “walk-your-block” with your family and neighbors. Join I Love a Clean San Diego on Zoom for the 9am kick-off, and then beautify your neighborhood!

  • February 6, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Pine Valley Community VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Pine Valley community to divert litter from the Tijuana watershed. Learn more or register.

  • February 20, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Sweetwater Community VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Sweetwater community to divert litter from the San Diego Bay watershed. Learn more or register.

  • February 27, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Ramona Community VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Ramona community to divert litter from the San Dieguito watershed. Learn more or register.


February 4, 3pm to 5pm – Sunset Sweep: Swan Canyon Neighborhood VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup

Join I Love a Clean San Diego, San Diego Canyonlands, and Think Blue in a virtual canyon cleanup. Participants will do a ‘sunset sweep’ of their neighborhood and collect trash around the Swan Canyon community to keep it from traveling through the canyon into the Pacific Ocean. Watch a video at 3pm and then get out there to beautify your canyon neighborhood! Learn more or register.


February 13, 9am to 11am – Cupid’s VIRTUAL Cleanup – City of San Diego

Join I Love a Clean San Diego and Think Blue San Diego in celebrating Valentine’s Day! Show your home and neighborhood some love by collecting trash across the City of San Diego. Learn more or register.


Ongoing – Solo Cleanups

Organized by Surfrider San Diego, participate in safe, physically distant ‘solo’ cleanups on your own – at the beach, in your neighborhood, at your local park – or anywhere in your watershed. Learn more about solo cleanup guidelines, how to tally your trash cleanup activity, and how you can make a difference in preventing trash from reaching the beach in the first place.

February 3, 11am to 12pm – That’s Swale! Saving Water with Soil Online Event

The Water Conservation Garden is hosting an online event to learn how to slow, spread, and sink water into your landscape through various earthwork applications like swales and basins. Learn more or register.


WaterSmart Residential and Professional Landscape and Irrigation Online Programs

The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart program is providing free residential and professional landscaper educational programs on landscape design and irrigation management during the month of February and throughout 2021.

  • February 6, 9am to 12pm – Design: Shape Your Space -- learn how to integrate your landscape into your personal lifestyle. Learn more or register.
  • February 20, 9am to 12pm – Plants: Inspiring Choices for Our Region – learn about which plants to use in designing a low-water-use landscape and why some are more water efficient than others. Learn more or register.
  • February 24-March 14  WaterSmart 4-Class Online Landscape Makeover Series – The WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series is a free educational program that will empower you to upgrade your high-water-use turf area into a WaterSmart landscape. The four-class online series will cover topics on creating a beautiful and climate appropriate replacement to traditional turf, shaping your new landscape space to support the way you intend to use it, retrofitting to and maintaining an efficient water-saving irrigation system, and meeting with Design Coaches. University of California Cooperative Extension - San Diego County - Integrated Pest Management (IPM) – Healthy Garden, Healthy Home Program Online Workshops

  • February 6, 10 am to 11:30 am – Starting to Grow You Own Food? – learn how to win the battle against pests and how to keep your plants healthy. Learn more or register.
  • February 20, 10 am to 11:30 am – How to Grow a Salsa Garden! – learn the proper planting for a healthier backyard salsa garden and tips for controlling common pests and diseases. Learn more or register.

February 9, 4pm to 5 pm – Keep It Together! Sustainable Landscaping Webinar

Join I Love a Clean San Diego in partnership with the County of San Diego as we cover sustainable landscaping practices as they relate to our waterways. Learn planting best practices, ways to control erosion within our own backyards, and gardening habits to adopt to prevent water pollution. Learn more or register.


Beginning February 15th at 8pm Winter California Native Plant Sale Online Order and Pickup

The San Diego Chapter of the California Native Plant Society will be holding its winter online plant sale where you can choose among a variety of native plants that are optimal for saving water and attracting native birds, bees, and butterflies. You can find the list of plants currently available for ordering online. Ordering begins on February 15th. Limited to the first 180 orders. Learn more or order.


Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars

A series of landscape and water-savings webinars are being offered throughout the month of February. Dates and times vary. Hosted by California American Water and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. See calendar and learn more or register.

  • Turf: Remove, Replace or Maintain Organically – learn how to design your yard using principles of watershed-wise landscaping including removing your lawn without chemicals, building healthy soil, and selecting climate-appropriate and water-wise plants.
  • Garden Design Webinar – learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan and palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing/siting rainwater capture area.
  • Watershed Wise Landscaping – learn the basics of watershed landscaping including building a healthy living soil sponge, capturing rainwater, selecting native plants, and controlling your irrigation.
  • Compost: Building the Soil Sponge – get an introduction to the Soil Food Web and learn how to make your own compost and other amendments for your garden.
  • Irrigation and Water Use Efficiency – learn how to design a yard using the principles of watershed-wise landscaping including an overview of an irrigation system, programming a controller, why ‘drip’ over ‘spray,’ and easy ways to conserve water.
  • Turf Removal and Garden Transformation  learn how to plan for your garden transformation and remove your lawn without chemicals, and other tips on watershed-wise landscaping.
  • Rainwater Capture – learn how to design your yard using watershed-wise landscaping including criteria and considerations when selecting rain capture methods such as swales, berms, cisterns and integrating hardscapes.

February 23, 3pm to 4pm – Responding to Pesticide Emergencies (fee $40)

The University of California Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is offering a monthly webinar series on pesticide safety. This month’s topic will cover workplace pesticide safety, emergency preparedness & prevention. Learn more about the webinar series or register.

I Love a Clean San Diego is offering the following waste reduction webinars for residents and businesses.

  • February 6, 10am to 11am – Conscious Closets Webinar – City of Encinitas – learn how to create an environmentally conscious closet including tips on successful thrift shopping, repairing clothing items, and creating a low waste laundry routine. Learn more or sign up.
  • February 24, 4pm to 5:30pm – Green Business Solutions Webinar – learn about zero waste best practices including the importance of a zero-waste workplace, the environmental and economic benefits of going green, how to implement lasting sustainable practices in your business, and how to increase employee engagement. February Virtual Compost Workshops

The Living Coastal Discovery Center and City of Chula Vista is offering the following compost workshops where participants will learn the basics on how to start their own compost pile and turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil.


The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation – 2021 Waste Reduction Webinars are in the process of being scheduled. Check back here for additional webinars. Supporting partners include the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department, Urban Corps, and the County of San Diego Recycling.

  • February 17, 10am to 2pm – scheduled pickups between 10am and 2pm Free E-Business Waste Pickup – Coastal North County Cities – in partnership with Urban Corps, a FREE e-waste pick-up service is being provided to businesses in coastal North County cities. Sign up by Friday, February 12th for the Wednesday, February 17th pick up. Learn more or register.

Free Hazardous Waste Training for Businesses

The California Unified Program Annual Training Conference will be offering Free Hazardous Waste Training Sessions for Businesses. Training will cover the basics of identifying what is a hazardous waste, proper labeling and accumulation requirements, record keeping requirements, and generator status. Attend one of the two training sessions being offered in February. Conference attendance is not required. Learn more or register.

County of San Diego Rain Barrel Events

The County of San Diego is sponsoring the following rain barrel events in partnership with the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation. Learn more or pre-order.

  • February 6, 9am to 12pm – Lakeside Community Center – 9841 Vine Street – Lakeside – Rain barrels must be pre-ordered online by January 31st. 
  • Ongoing during Solana Center store hours – Rain barrels may be picked up after purchase during store hours Thursday 12pm to 5pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm at Solana Center’s headquarters in Encinitas.
