Virtual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events

December 2020

We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in December and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.


 

Cleanup Events

I Love A Clean San Diego Virtual Community Cleanups

Several VIRTUAL litter cleanups are being offered during the month of December. Participants will collect trash around their communities to divert litter from their respective watersheds. Participate in these cleanups to protect the environment as well as each other, and “walk-your-block” with your family and neighbors. Join ILACSD on Zoom for the 9am kick-off, and then beautify your neighborhood!


 

I Love A Clean San Diego, San Diego Canyonlands, and Think Blue Virtual Canyon Cleanups

Several VIRTUAL litter cleanups are being offered for canyon communities during the month of December. Participants will collect trash around their respective communities to keep it from traveling through the canyons into the Pacific Ocean. Participate in protecting the environment as well as each other and do a “sunset sweep” of your neighborhood on Thursday afternoons. Watch a video at 3pm and then get out there to beautify your canyon neighborhood!

  • December 3, 3pm to 5pm – 32nd Street Canyon VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around 32nd Street Canyon. Learn more or register.
  • December 10, 3pm to 5pm – Juniper Canyon VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around Juniper Canyon. Learn more or register.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars

A series of landscape and water-savings webinars are being offered throughout the month of December. Dates and times vary. There are limited spaces remaining for the December classes, but you can register for similar classes in January. See calendar and learn more or register.

  • Turf Removal and Garden Transformation Webinar (offered in both English and Spanish) – learn how to plan for your garden transformation and remove your lawn without chemicals, and other tips on watershed-wise landscaping.
  • Garden Design Webinar – learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing/siting rainwater capture area.
  • California Friendly Native Plant Landscape Webinar – learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.

 

University of California Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Pesticide Safety Webinars (fee $40)

The UC IPM is offering a monthly webinar series on pesticide safety. Learn more about the webinar series or register.

  • December 1, 3pm to 4pm – Best Practices to Keep Pesticides Out of Water – learn how to prevent contamination of ground and surface water when making pesticide applications.
  • December 8, 3pm to 4pm Pesticide Label Reading for Making Safe Applications – learn to identify and understand label requirements that ensure safety for the pesticide handler, other employees, and bystanders.

 

Residential and Professional Landscape and Irrigation Online Programs

The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart program is providing free residential educational programs on landscape design and irrigation management during the month of December and in 2021.

  • December 5, 9am to 12pm – Installation & Maintenance: Protecting Your Investment – learn strategies for success in removing your turf and installing and maintaining your landscaping. Learn more or register.
  • 2021 WaterSmart 4-Class Landscape Makeover Series – The WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series is a free educational program that will empower you to upgrade your high-water-use turf area into a WaterSmart landscape. The 2021 4-class online series is planned for early 2021. December 5, 10am to 2pm Used Oil and Filtering Recycling Event – Bring in your used oil filter and receive a new one FREE at participating AutoZone locations in Fallbrook, Ramona, Lakeside, and Spring Valley. Provided in partnership with WasteFreeSD.org, CalRecycle, and the County of San Diego. See AutoZone locations and learn more.


 

December 26th through January 23rd – 46th Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program – The City of San Diego is holding its 46th annual Christmas Tree Recycling program at a variety of drop-off sites throughout the San Diego community. See drop-off site locations and learn more.


 

Celebrate Sustainably Webinars for the Holiday Season

I Love A Clean San Diego is offering the following webinars aimed at reducing food waste and maintaining a low-waste lifestyle this holiday season.

  • December 3, 11am to 12pm – Celebrate Sustainably: Gifts and Glitz Webinar for Carlsbad Residents  attend this educational webinar on how to maintain a low-waste lifestyle while navigating the holiday season. Provided in partnership with the City of Carlsbad Sustainable Materials Management Division. Learn more or register.
  • December 15, 11am to 12pm – Celebrate Sustainably: Food and Festivities Webinar  learn ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce in our kitchens around big holiday meals. Provided in partnership with the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department.  Learn more or register.

 

The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Webinars

A series of waste reduction webinars are being offered throughout the month of December. Supporting partners include the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department, Urban Corps, and the County of San Diego Recycling.

  • December 2, 2pm to 3pm – Bokashi Basics Webinar – City of San Diego learn the basics of Bokashi, a ‘pre-composting’ technique that allows you to compost ALL your food waste, allowing fresh materials to be preserved and composted at your leisure. Learn more or register.
  • December 5, 2:00pm to 3:00pm – Backyard Composting Basics Webinar  learn how to compost food and yard waste in your backyard. Learn more or register.
  • December 9, 6pm to 7pm Vermicomposting Basics Webinar – vermicomposting (worm composting) is an environmentally-friendly way to turn your food waste into nutrient-rich castings for your plants or garden beds. Learn more or register.
  • December 16, scheduled pickups between 10am and 2pm – Free Business E-Waste Pickup – Businesses in coastal North County cities are eligible for this free service. Sign up by Friday, December 11th for the Wednesday, December 16th pick up! Learn more or register.
  • December 17, 6pm to 7pm – Manure Management for the Small Ranch or Farm Webinar – Learn how to protect your local watershed and produce a great soil amendment through manure composting for a small amount of livestock. Includes a virtual visit to a Lakeside ranch to watch a compost pile build in process and chat with ranch owner. Learn more or register.

 

December Virtual Compost Workshops

The Living Coastal Discovery Center and City of Chula Vista are offering the following compost workshops where participants will learn the basics on how to start their own compost pile and turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil. Workshops are open to Chula Vista and non-Chula Vista residents.
