Virtual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events

November 2020

We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in November and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.


 

Cleanup Events

I Love a Clean San Diego Virtual Cleanups

Several VIRTUAL litter cleanups are being offered during the month of November. Participants will collect trash around their communities to divert litter from the Sweetwater watershed. Participate in these cleanups to protect the environment as well as each other, and “walk-your-block” with your family and neighbors. Join ILACSD on Zoom for the 9am kick-off, and then beautify your neighborhood!

  • November 7, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Rancho San Diego VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Rancho San Diego community. Learn more or register.
  • November 14, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors Casa De Oro VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Casa De Oro community. Learn more or register.
  • November 21, 9am to 11am – Watershed Warriors La Presa VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the La Presa community. Learn more or register.

 

I Love a Clean San Diego, San Diego Canyonlands, and Think Blue Virtual Canyon Cleanups

Several VIRTUAL litter cleanups are being offered for canyon communities during the month of November. Participants will collect trash around their respective communities to keep it from traveling through the canyons into the Pacific Ocean. Participate in protecting the environment as well as each other and do a “sunset sweep” of your neighborhood on Thursday afternoons. Watch a video at 3pm and then get out there to beautify your canyon neighborhood!

  • November 5, 3pm to 5pm – Sunset Sweep Hollywood Canyon VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around Hollywood Canyon. Learn more or register.
  • November 12, 3pm to 5pm – Sunset Sweep Manzanita Canyon South VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around Manzanita Canyon SOUTH. Learn more or register.
  • November 19, 3pm to 5pm – Sunset Sweep Manzanita Canyon North VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around Manzanita Canyon NORTH. Learn more or register.

 

Landscape & Garden Events

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars

A series of landscape and water-savings webinars are being offered throughout the month of November. Dates and times vary. There are limited spaces remaining for the November classes, but you can register for similar classes in December. See calendar and learn more or register .

  • Turf Removal and Garden Transformation Webinar (offered in both English and Spanish) – learn how to plan for your garden transformation and remove your lawn without chemicals, and other tips on watershed-wise landscaping.
  • Garden Design Webinar – learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing/siting rainwater capture area.
  • California Friendly Native Plant Landscape Webinar – learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.

 

November 10, 3pm to 4pm – Pesticide Containers: Proper Use and Disposal Webinar (fee $40)

The UC IPM (University of California Integrated Pest Management) program is offering a monthly webinar series on pesticide safety. The November 10th webinar will cover proper use and disposal of pesticide containers. Learn more about the webinar series or register.


 

November 10, 11am to 12:30pm – Hillside Planting Webinar

The Water Conservation Garden is hosting an online webinar on beautiful solutions for hard to plant spaces such as slopes and hillsides. Learn more or register.


 

WaterSmart Residential and Professional Landscape and Irrigation Online Programs

The San Diego County Water Authority’s WaterSmart program is providing free residential educational programs on landscape design and irrigation management during the month of November.

  • November 7, 9am to 12pm – Plants: Inspiring Choices for Our Region – learn about which plants to use in designing a low-water-use landscape and why some are more water efficient than others. Learn more or register.
  • November 21, 9am to 12pm – Water & Irrigation: Utilizing a Precious Resource – learn strategies to use our limited water sources wisely, including integrating stormwater capture elements into your landscape and conserving water through simple irrigation system retrofits. Learn more or register.
  • 2021 WaterSmart 4-Class Landscape Makeover Series The WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series is a free educational program that will empower you to upgrade your high-water-use turf area into a WaterSmart landscape. The 2021 4-class online series is planned for early 2021. Celebrate Sustainably Webinars for the Holiday Season

I Love A Clean San Diego is offering the following webinars aimed at reducing food waste and maintaining a low-waste lifestyle this holiday season.

  • November 14, 10am to 11am – Celebrate Sustainably: Gifts and Gatherings Webinar for Carlsbad Residents – attend this educational webinar on how to maintain a low-waste lifestyle while navigating the holiday season. Provided in partnership with the City of Carlsbad Sustainable Materials Management Division. Learn more or register.
  • November 21, 10am to 11am – Celebrate Sustainably: Food and Festivities Webinar learn ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce in our kitchens around big holiday meals. Provided in partnership with the County of San Diego. Learn more or register

 

National Recycling Day is November 15th – San Diego County residents are encouraged to recycle on National Recycling Day and every day to prevent waste from reaching our local waterways, ocean, and landfills. Celebrate National Recycling Day by participating in the following local events.

  • November 9 through November 13 America Recycles Day Week-long Video Celebration – I Love A Clean San Diego will be providing five videos to schools in the unincorporated County, focusing on a different aspect of recycling and highlighting the importance of America Recycles Day. Teachers will show the daily videos either in-class or in a virtual setting. Content will be geared towards 3rd-5th grade students and will include a daily activity challenge for students.
  • November 16, 12pm – ‘Ask Me Anything’ Facebook Live Recycling Event – The County of San Diego Recycling Program will be hosting a Facebook Live Event on Recycling Right. Join this live event here on November 16th at noon.
  • November 18, 4pm to 5pm – Recycle Right Webinar: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them – I Love A Clean San Diego in partnership with the County of San Diego will be hosting a webinar on recycling basics that will focus on clearing up confusion when it comes to recycling and why HOW you recycle matters. Learn more or register. 

 

The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Webinars

A series of waste reduction webinars are being offered throughout the month of November.

  • November 4, 10am to 11am – Achieving Your Zero Waste Potential Webinar – learn the basics of waste reduction and why it's important to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (in THAT order). Learn more or register.
  • November 11, 12pm to 1pm – Smart Ways to Fight Food Waste Webinar – learn how reducing food waste at home helps to protect the environment and save you money. Learn more or register.      
  • November 12, 6pm to 7pm Vermicomposting Basics Webinar – vermicomposting (worm composting) is an environmentally-friendly way to turn your food waste into nutrient-rich castings for your plants or garden beds. Learn more or register.
  • November 17, 2pm to 3pm – Ask a Backyard Composting Specialist Webinar – In partnership with the Water Conservation Garden, Solana Center’s knowledgeable educators will answer your questions on composting green waste and food scraps in your backyard.   • November 18, 12pm to 1pm – Intro to Backyard Composting and Vermicomposting Webinar – City of Encinitas learn how through backyard composting and vermicomposting (composting with worms) you can improve the quality of your soil, reduce waste and air pollution, while saving energy, money, and water. County of San Diego Rain Barrel Pickup Events

The County of San Diego is sponsoring the following rain barrel events in partnership with the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation. Rain barrels must be pre-ordered online. Learn more or pre-order.

  • November 7, 9am to 12pm – Bates Nut Farm – Valley Center – Rain barrels must be pre-ordered online by October 31st. 
  • Ongoing during Solana Center store hours – Rain barrels may be picked up after purchase during store hours Thursday 12pm to 5pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm at Solana Center’s headquarters in Encinitas.

Center for Watershed Protection Virtual Events

The Center for Watershed Protection is holding the following virtual events in November for stormwater and watershed professionals.

  • November 16 and 17, all day event 2020 CWP Virtual Coastal & Island Specialty Conference (fee varies) – learn about the unique challenges of coastal and island water communities including the interrelationships of watersheds, stormwater management, water quality, and climate resiliency.   • November 18, 10am to 11:30am Pacific Time – Watershed Based Planning Techniques Webcast (non-member fee $159) – learn how watershed-based planning can be effective in tying together multiple community objectives including managing stormwater, improving water quality, protecting high quality natural resources, and providing for public recreation.
