Virtual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events

October 2020

We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in October and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.

I Love a Clean San Diego Virtual Cleanups

Several VIRTUAL litter cleanups are being offered during the month of October. Participants will collect trash around their communities to divert litter from their respective watersheds. Participate in these cleanups to protect the environment as well as each other, and “walk-your-block” with your family and neighbors. Join ILACSD on Zoom for the 9am kick-off, and then beautify your neighborhood!

  • October 3, 2020, 9am. to 11am – Watershed Warriors Ramona VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Ramona community to divert litter from the San Dieguito watershed. Learn more or register.
  • October 10, 2020, 9am. to 11am – Watershed Warriors Bonita VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Bonita community to divert litter from the Sweetwater watershed. Learn more or register.
  • October 17, 2020, 9am. to 11am – Watershed Warriors Spring Valley VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Spring Valley community to divert litter from the Sweetwater watershed. Learn more or register.
  • October 24, 2020, 9am. to 11am – Watershed Warriors Alpine VIRTUAL Litter Cleanup – trash will be collected from around the Alpine community to divert litter from the San Diego watershed. Learn more or register.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Landscape and Water-Savings Webinars

A series of landscape and water-savings webinars are being offered throughout the month of October. Dates and times vary. See calendar and learn more or register.

  • Turf Removal and Garden Transformation Webinar – learn how to plan for your garden transformation and remove your lawn without chemicals, and other tips on watershed-wise landscaping.
  • Garden Design Webinar – learn how to identify critical steps for successfully designing a watershed-wise landscape including developing a successful planting plan, developing a palette of climate-appropriate plants, and sizing/siting rainwater capture area.
  • California Friendly Native Plant Landscape Webinar learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.

 


 

California American Water Company Irrigation and Water Use Efficiency Webinars

Irrigation and water use efficiency webinars are being offered on two different dates in October. You will learn how to design a yard using the principles of watershed-wise landscaping including overview of an irrigation system, programming a controller, why ‘drip’ over ‘spray,’ and easy ways to conserve water.

 


 

October 27, 3pm to 4pm –Storage, Transport and Disposal of Pesticides Webinar in SPANISH (fee $40)

The UC IPM (University of California Integrated Pest Management) program is offering a monthly webinar series on pesticide safety. The October 27th webinar will cover principles of safe storage, transportation, and disposal of pesticides. Learn more about the webinar series or register.

 


 

WaterSmart landscape and irrigation online workshops are being offered by the San Diego County Water Authority:

  • October 6, 5:30pm to 8:30pm – Installation & Maintenance: Protecting Your InvestmentAfter planning your new garden space, learn how to protect your investment, minimize your water use, and maximize your enjoyment of an outdoor space that suits your lifestyle. Learn more or register.
  • October 10, 9am to 12pm – Plan Ahead: Understanding Soil and Site Assessmentslearn strategies needed to turn water-thirsty turf into a beautiful and sustainable landscape, including the importance of healthy soil.  Learn more or register.
  • October 24, 9am to 12pm – Design: Shape Your Space learn how to plan for the functionality of your new space and learn tips on achieving a design style that fits your personal style.  Learn more or register.

 


 

October 28, 11am to 12pm – That’s Swale! Saving Water with Soil Online Event

The Water Conservation Garden is hosting an online session on how to build swales and basins to slow, spread and sink water into your landscape. Learn more or register.

I Love A Clean San Diego and the City of Poway are offering an educational webinar on food waste and organics recycling. Learn more or register.

 


 

The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation Waste Reduction Events

Waste reduction events are being offered for households and businesses:

  • October 3, 10am to 11am – Build Your Own Backyard Compost Bin Webinar – City of San Diego learn how to build a simple, economical and effective backyard compost bin. Learn more to register.
  • October 16, 5pm to 6pm Build Your Own Vermicomposting Bin Webinar – City of San Diego – learn how to construct an effective bin for composting food waste at home with red wiggler worms. Learn more or register.
  • October 21, 10am to 2pm – Free E-Business Waste Pickup – Coastal North County Cities – in partnership with Urban Corps, a FREE e-waste pick-up service is being provided to businesses in coastal North County cities. Sign up by Friday, October 16th for the Wednesday, October 21st pick up. Learn more or register.

 


 

County of San Diego Rain Barrel Events

The County of San Diego is sponsoring the following rain barrel events in partnership with the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation.  Learn more or pre-order.

  • October 24, 2pm to 5pm –The Water Conservation Garden – Rancho San Diego (El Cajon)   Rain barrels must be pre-ordered online by October 18th. 
  • November 7, 9am to 12pm – Bates Nut Farm – Valley Center – Rain barrels must be pre-ordered online by October 31st. 
  • Ongoing during Solana Center store hours – Rain barrels may be picked up after purchase during store hours Thursday 12pm to 5pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm at Solana Center’s headquarters in Encinitas.
