We all play a part in preventing stormwater pollution. Here are some ways to get involved in September and help protect our local waterways! All events are free unless otherwise indicated.

September 20, 2020 – 8:30am to 12:30pm – Keep America Beautiful® VIRTUAL Plogging TrashDash

Keep America Beautiful® is hosting its 2nd annual (and 1st virtual) plogging TrashDash. Plogging is the combination of picking up litter while jogging. No matter your location or time zone, you can participate in the global movement via social media to end litter. Learn more or register.

September 26, 2020 – throughout the day – 36th Annual VIRTUAL Coastal Cleanup Day

The 36th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day is going virtual! Join the County of San Diego and its official Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator, I Love A Clean San Diego, to be a part of the global cleanup effort by removing litter and debris from your community throughout the day on September 26th. This year, volunteers are encouraged to walk their block or neighborhood with members of their household, in order to protect the health of our community and our environment. Registration to pick up cleaning supplies, provided at Supply Hubs throughout the County, begins on September 1st. Learn more or register at cleanupday.org.

September 1 through September 15, Fall California Native Plant Sale Online Order and Pickup

The San Diego Chapter of the California Native Plant Society will be holding its fall online plant sale where you can choose among a variety of native plants that are optimal for saving water and attracting native birds, bees and butterflies. You can find the list of plants currently available for ordering online. Ordering begins on September 1st. Learn more or order.


September 8, 3pm to 4pm – Storage, Transport and Disposal of Pesticides Webinar (fee $40)

The UC IPM (University of California Integrated Pest Management) program is offering a monthly webinar series on pesticide safety. The September 8th webinar will cover principles of safe storage, transportation, and disposal of pesticides. Learn more about the webinar series or register.


September 15, 2:30pm to 6pm – Ask a Master Gardener – Escondido Farmer’s Market

Bring your questions on gardening issues, pest management, irrigation, etc. and get help from a University of California Cooperative Extension certified Master Gardener. Learn more.


WaterSmart landscape and irrigation online workshops are being offered by the San Diego County Water Authority:

  • September 10, 5:30pm to 8:30pm – Plants: Inspiring Choices for Our Region – learn about which plants to use in designing a low-water-use landscape and why some are more water efficient than others. Learn more or register.
  • September 25, 5:30pm to 8:30pm – Water & Irrigation: Utilizing a Precious Resourcelearn strategies to use our limited water sources wisely, including integrating stormwater capture elements into your landscape and conserving water through simple irrigation system retrofits.  Learn more or register.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is hosting a two-part series of landscape and water-savings classes throughout the month of September. Dates and times vary. See calendar and learn more or register.

  • Part I – California Friendly Native Plant Landscape Webinar  learn how to design a yard using the four principles of gorgeous and watershed-wise landscaping including building healthy soil, capturing rainfall, selecting native plants that minimize water use, and controlling irrigation.
  • Part II – Turf Removal and Garden Transformation Webinar learn how to plan for your garden transformation and remove your lawn without chemicals, and other tips on watershed-wise landscaping.

September 12, 10am to 11am – Green Routines Webinar – City of Carlsbad

I Love A Clean San Diego and the City of Carlsbad Sustainable Materials Management Division are offering an educational webinar on how to divert waste from our landfills, especially organics, and give you some handy tools to help stop wasting food (and money)! Learn more or register.


The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation is offering the following waste reduction events for households and businesses:

  • September 15, 2pm to 3pm – Backyard Composting Webinar – City of San Diego – a 1-hour educational webinar will be provided to learn how to improve the quality of your soil, and reduce waste and air pollution, while saving energy, money, and water. Learn more or register.
  • September 16, 10am to 2pm – Free E-Business Waste Pickup – Coastal North County Cities – in partnership with Urban Corps, a FREE e-waste pick-up service is being provided to businesses in coastal North County cities. Sign up by Friday, September 11th for the Wednesday, September 16th pick up. Learn more or register.
  • September 19, 10am to 11am Vermicomposting Webinar – City of San Diego -- vermicomposting (worm composting) is an environmentally-friendly way to turn your food waste into nutrient-rich castings for your plants or garden beds. Learn more or register.
