Special Edition: What You Need To Know for the 2016 Presidential General Election


Election Day is coming up on November 8, but there are things you need to know NOW to make sure you can exercise your civic duty by casting your vote. This special edition of the Live Well San Diego newsletter includes important dates, information and resources to make voting this fall as simple and easy as possible.


Poll Workers Needed for Nov 8 Election

Poll workers, especially those bilingual in any one of eight specific languages, are needed for the November 8 Presidential General Election. The Registrar’s office is required by federal law to provide bilingual speakers and voting materials to voters who speak Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese and Chinese. In addition, a survey conducted by the University of California, Berkeley showed a need for speakers of Khmer, Japanese, Korean and Hindi at about 20 precincts countywide, so the Registrar’s office is also recruiting poll workers who are bilingual in those languages.

To become a poll worker, applicants must be a U.S citizen and registered to vote in California, or lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States. Poll workers must have transportation to their assigned polling location, access to the internet to take an online training and attend a two-hour class in person.

Poll workers receive a stipend ranging from $75 to $175 depending on the assignment and those who are bilingual receive an additional $15 if they are assigned to provide language assistance to voters.

Plan Ahead, Save Time at the Polls

As a result of a large number of contests in the November 8 Presidential General Election, San Diego County registered voters will for the first time get a two-card ballot. Contests will be listed on the front and back of each page. Considering the length of the ballot and what is traditionally a high turnout for a presidential election, the Registrar of Voters is urging voters to plan ahead and save time at the polls.

One way? Vote by mail! Sign up to be a permanent mail ballot voter at sdvote.com. More than 950,000 mail ballots will go out to homes starting Monday, October 10. When they arrive, mail ballot voters are urged to act on them as soon as they’ve made their decisions. Here are the advantages: 

  • Voting by mail is simple. Your ballot arrives conveniently in your mailbox.
  • Voting by mail is smart. Make voting decisions and complete your ballot in the comfort of your own home.
  • Voting by mail is secure. Seal your completed ballot in the provided envelope, sign and date it, add postage and mail it promptly so it is received well before Nov. 8.

The two-card ballot does weigh a bit more so you’ll need approximately 67 cents in postage.

Voters interested in casting their ballots at their assigned poll on Election Day are encouraged to mark their selections on their sample ballot pamphlet before going to the poll. If you have your completed sample ballot pamphlet ready when you enter the voting booth, you can quickly fill in the official ballot and be on your way.

The polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. The location is listed on the back of the Sample Ballot and Voter Information Pamphlet sent to your home or you can use the polling place locator online. Type in your address and click submit to find your neighborhood polling place.

Residents can fill out a registration form online and if their signature is confirmed through Department of Motor Vehicles records, it will automatically be sent to the Registrar. If the signature is not confirmed, the voter will be instructed to print the form, sign it and mail it to the Registrar. For voters without access to a computer, the forms are also available at the Registrar of Voters office, US Postal Service offices, City Clerk offices, family resource centers, public libraries and Department of Motor Vehicles offices. All forms must be postmarked or delivered to the Registrar of Voters no later than October 24.

**Tuesday, November 1Deadline to apply for mail ballot

Voters can find the application online or on the back of the sample ballot and voter information pamphlet sent to each registered voter. You can also request a mail ballot by sending a letter to the Registrar of Voters with your name, registered address, the name and date of the election, the address where the ballot is to be mailed and your signature. Send forms to Registrar of Voters, 5600 Overland Ave., San Diego, 92123 or fax them to (858) 694-2955. As a third option, registered voters can request a mail ballot by phone at (858) 565-5800. The request applies only to the November 8 election and the call must be made by the registered voter. All applications must be in house at the Registrar’s office by 5 p.m. on November 1. Postmarks cannot be accepted. Voters who are already signed up to vote permanently by mail do not need to reapply.
