When was the last time you went to the doctor?  If it has been a while, it might be time to make that appointment.  Regular doctor’s visits for health screenings and annual exams can help you identify health risks before they become a problem. Preventing disease can be just as important as treating it.

Immunizations play an important role in prevention.  There are 16 required and recommended vaccines available to protect infants, children and teens, but you never outgrow the need for immunizations.  Immunizations for adults are determined by many different factors and often vaccines we received in childhood require boosters at regular intervals to maintain immunity.

In honor of National Immunization Awareness Month, all San Diego County residents are encouraged to check with their healthcare providers to ensure all vaccinations are up-to-date for themselves and their children.  There are many locations where adults can obtain recommended immunizations.   Influenza (“flu”), Tdap, and other vaccines are available at many retail pharmacies, as well as at physician offices.

August’s Live Well San Diego newsletter edition highlights programs, resources and activities that provide immunization and health services to residents in the San Diego region.
