By Cathi Palatella, Assistant Director of Child Welfare Services, County of San Diego

May is National Foster Care Month - a month set aside to focus attention on the year-round needs of children and youth in foster care, and to acknowledge the dedicated individuals who help them find permanent homes and connections. There are many people and organizations working in San Diego County to ensure a bright future for children and youth in foster care.  With their help, approximately 2,800 children are currently placed in foster care throughout San Diego.

The work of these individuals crosses all components of the Live Well San Diego vision for a healthy, safe and thriving region. Ensuring youth in foster care have access to quality health services as well as helping them adopt healthy lifestyles is essential to Building Better Health. Protecting youth from harm and strengthening families contributes to Living Safely. And supporting youth in completing their education and achieving a highest possible quality of life is key to Thriving communities now and in the future.

This month’s Live Well San Diego newsletter edition highlights resources and opportunities to nurture a child for a little while…or a lifetime.
