 Around the Third District
Left: Supervisor Rowe joined Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP) Superintendent Jane Rodgers for an operational tour of the nearly 800,000-acre park. JTNP welcomed nearly 3 million visitors last year, many of whom traveled through Morongo Basin communities on their way to the West Entrance. The tour provided an opportunity to learn more about park operations, visitor needs, and the challenges of managing one of the region’s most popular natural attractions.
Right: Members of the Redlands Sunrise Rotary Club welcomed Supervisor Rowe as a guest speaker for their recent meeting at the historic Burrage Mansion in Redlands. Yucaipa High School Alum Takes the World Series Stage
A former Yucaipa High School baseball standout is headed to the biggest stage in baseball. Tyler Wells, a right-handed pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, is part of the team preparing to face the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2026 World Series, which begins Friday, October 23.
Wells played baseball at Yucaipa High School, where he set a school record with a remarkable 0.28 earned run average during his senior season and earned All-Citrus Belt League honors. He continued his baseball career at Cal State San Bernardino before the Minnesota Twins selected him in the 15th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
After making his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 2021, Wells developed into a versatile pitcher, working as both a starter and reliever. Despite overcoming multiple elbow injuries, he returned to form in 2026 and was traded to Tampa Bay in August. Now, the former Yucaipa Thunderbird and Cal State San Bernardino Coyote has a chance to make baseball history as the Rays pursue their first World Series championship!

New Documentary Celebrates America's Most Famous Highway
For 100 years, Route 66 has represented the freedom of the open road, the spirit of adventure, and a uniquely American way of life. Established in 1926, the legendary highway stretches about 2,400 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, passing through eight states and countless communities. San Bernardino County holds a special place in that history, with the Mother Road winding through the Mojave Desert and through Barstow, Victorville, and San Bernardino, helping shape the region's growth, tourism, and cultural identity.
A new feature-length documentary, Route 66: The Main Street of America, celebrates the highway's centennial by exploring the people, places, and stories that continue to make it an American icon. Directed by award-winning filmmaker John Paget, the film takes viewers on a journey across all eight Route 66 states, highlighting historic roadside attractions, revitalized downtowns and the people working to preserve the highway's legacy. The documentary is part of a nationwide roadshow with more than 40 screenings in communities along the historic route.
San Bernardino will host the film's California premiere this Friday, October 23, at 6:00 p.m. at the historic California Theatre, 562 W. Fourth Street. The special one-night event will include a screening of the documentary, followed by a live Q&A with director John Paget and individuals featured in the film. As Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary, the documentary offers an opportunity to rediscover the highway that helped connect America and left a lasting mark on San Bernardino County. County Seeks Input on New Mental Health Resource App for Teens
San Bernardino County teens could soon find mental health resources and support more easily. The County Department of Behavioral Health is developing the Teen 311 App, a mobile platform designed to help young people ages 12–18 connect with local behavioral health resources, crisis support, community services, and educational materials. The goal is to make it easier for teens to find information and assistance when they need it.
The proposed app is part of a three-year pilot project extending through 2029. Plans include a phased rollout across San Bernardino County, outreach through schools and community events, and ongoing evaluations to determine how effectively the app connects young people with available services. The County also hopes to learn more about how teens use the technology, whether it improves awareness of mental health resources, and how accessible and user-friendly the app is.
Now, the County wants to hear from you! Parents, students, educators, and community members are invited to review the draft Teen 311 App Pilot Project Plan and provide feedback before the public comment period closes on Wednesday, October 28. Comments will help guide the project as it moves through the planning and review process. To review the proposal and learn how to submit comments, visit the County's Teen 311 App information page.

Yucaipa High School Teacher Named One of California's Best
Yucaipa High School educator Ashley Uraine has been named one of California's 2027 Teachers of the Year, one of five teachers selected for the honor. The recognition is the first for an educator from San Bernardino County in 20 years. Uraine teaches healthcare career courses through the Colton, Redlands, Yucaipa Regional Occupation Program (CRYROP), where she has helped prepare more than 300 students to take state examinations and become Certified Medical Assistants. She was previously named both a CRYROP Teacher of the Year and a San Bernardino County Teacher of the Year.
After spending years working in healthcare, Uraine discovered a passion for preparing the next generation of medical professionals. “The moment I knew I wanted to be a teacher was after spending many years in the healthcare setting, and I wanted to be the educator that I didn't have in my field,” she explained. Beyond technical training, Uraine emphasizes compassion, empathy, and a supportive classroom environment. “When my students graduate, I hope they remember the knowledge and the positivity that they learned throughout their time in my classroom,” she said.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond praised the five honorees for their commitment to student success. “California's Teachers of the Year represent the very best of our profession. They see the potential in every student and work each day to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed,” Thurmond said. The five recipients will serve as ambassadors for California educators throughout 2027 and will be formally recognized at a ceremony in Sacramento. Congratulations to Mrs. Uraine on this remarkable achievement and for bringing statewide recognition to Yucaipa High School and San Bernardino County!
