During a recent advocacy trip to Washington, D.C., Supervisor Rowe met with members of California’s congressional delegation to discuss issues that matter most to San Bernardino County and the Third District. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, and Congressmen Pete Aguilar and Jay Obernolte were among the federal leaders who took time to discuss working together on behalf of the people we serve.
From infrastructure and public safety to economic development and the unique needs of our mountain, desert, and rural communities, these conversations help ensure our region has a strong voice in our nation's capital. Strong partnerships at every level of government are essential to delivering meaningful results for our communities.

 Earn Your High School Diploma Online, Free Through the Library
It's never too late to finish high school. Through the San Bernardino County Library's Career Online High School program, eligible adults can earn an accredited high school diploma and an industry-recognized career certificate online at no cost, thanks to scholarships provided by the California State Library. The flexible program allows students to complete coursework on their own schedule while receiving support from dedicated academic coaches.
The San Bernardino County Library administers the program countywide, with all 32 library branches serving as access points where residents can learn about the program and receive assistance. Enrollment, scholarship administration, and student success coaching are coordinated centrally to ensure participants receive consistent support throughout their educational journey.

 Stay Cool, Stay Safe
A National Weather Service heat advisory remains in effect until Saturday, August 8, at 8:00 p.m. for most of San Bernardino County. Extreme heat can become dangerous very quickly, so residents are encouraged to take extra precautions.
The best way to stay safe is to drink plenty of water throughout the day, limit outdoor activities during the hottest afternoon hours, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Never leave children, older adults, or pets inside a parked vehicle, even for a short time, and be sure to check on neighbors, friends, and family members who may be especially vulnerable during periods of extreme heat.
If your home becomes too warm, consider spending time at a San Bernardino County Library branch (locations available here) or another public, air-conditioned location. Libraries offer a cool, welcoming environment with free Wi-Fi and other resources while providing relief from the heat. Residents can also find designated cooling locations through the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health website.  Explore the Stars and Wildlife at
Galaxy Nights in Lucerne Valley
The San Bernardino County Library invites residents to an unforgettable evening of astronomy, wildlife, and hands-on discovery during Galaxy Nights: Wildlife After Dark on Saturday, August 15, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Janice Horst Branch Library, 33103 Old Woman Springs Road in Lucerne Valley.
Guests will see live animal presentations from High Desert Falconry featuring a Eurasian eagle owl, blue-tongued skink, greenbottle blue tarantula, and granite kingsnake, while learning about each species' unique adaptations, habitats and role in the natural world. Afterward, attendees will explore the night sky and discover the stories behind constellations including Ursa Major, Canis Major, and Auriga, highlighting the timeless connection between wildlife and astronomy.
The evening will also feature interactive educational stations hosted by San Bernardino County Regional Parks focused on wildlife conservation, local ecosystems, and environmental stewardship.  A Day of Opportunity Comes to
Big Bear Lake
Residents looking for a new job or helpful county services will have an opportunity to connect with both on Thursday, August 27, when the Job and Resource Fair returns to Hofert Hall, 39707 Big Bear Boulevard in Big Bear Lake.
Presented by San Bernardino County Workforce Development in partnership with Supervisor Rowe and the City of Big Bear Lake, the free event will bring together employers from a variety of industries, including healthcare, hospitality, retail, utilities, and more. Job seekers will have the chance to meet directly with hiring managers, learn about available positions, and make valuable professional connections. Employers can meet qualified candidates ready to join their workforce.
In addition to employment opportunities, several San Bernardino County departments will be on hand to provide information and services. Representatives from Workforce Development, Human Resources, the Public Defender's Office, the Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk's Office (ARC), and the Department of Veterans Affairs will be available to assist residents. Services include employment resources, record-clearing and expungement assistance, veterans' benefits information, and ARC services such as birth, death, and marriage certificates, notary public filings, and fictitious business name statements.

 Help Shape San Bernardino County’s Disaster Preparedness Plan
San Bernardino County residents are invited to help shape the future of local disaster preparedness by participating in a brief online survey as part of the 2026–2027 update to the County's Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (MJHMP). Updated every five years, the federally required plan serves as a roadmap for reducing the impacts of disasters before they happen while helping the County and participating jurisdictions remain eligible for federal hazard mitigation funding.
The San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services (OES), in partnership with Synergy Disaster Recovery, is leading the update and is seeking input from residents, businesses, community organizations, tribal partners, and other stakeholders throughout the county. The public engagement website includes information about the planning process and a five-minute survey designed to gather feedback on local hazards, past disaster experiences, and priorities for future mitigation efforts.
The updated plan addresses a wide range of potential hazards, including wildfires, earthquakes, floods, extreme heat, severe weather, drought, landslides, pandemics, and other threats that could impact communities across San Bernardino County. Public feedback will help the Hazard Mitigation Planning Team identify local concerns and develop strategies to strengthen community resilience for years to come.  Opening the Door to Better Accessibility in Joshua Tree
The Joshua Tree Community Center is now safer and more accessible for everyone who visits. The Department of Public Works – Special Districts recently completed a renovation project that upgraded the facility's east and west entrances with modern automatic door systems.
In addition to the new doors, the project included framing modifications, electrical upgrades, and finish repairs that improve the building's overall functionality while making it easier for residents and visitors to access the community center.
To minimize disruptions, construction was carefully phased so the Community Center remained open throughout the project, allowing scheduled programs and community events to continue without interruption. The improvements reflect San Bernardino County's ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, accessible, and welcoming public facilities for residents.  Perseid Meteor Shower
Returns Next Week
One of the year's most spectacular celestial events is almost here. The annual Perseid Meteor Shower will peak on the night of Wednesday, August 12, into the early morning of Thursday, August 13, allowing skywatchers to see 50 to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. Better yet, no bright moon is expected to interfere this year, making this one of the best recent opportunities to see the meteor shower.
Joshua Tree National Park, recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, is one of Southern California's premier destinations for stargazing. Its exceptionally dark desert skies provide incredible views of the Milky Way, constellations, planets, and the Perseids. While activity begins around 10:00 p.m., the best viewing typically occurs after midnight and continues until dawn. Visitors should be prepared for increased traffic and large crowds, particularly at popular park entrances and viewing areas.
To make the most of your visit, bring plenty of water, warm layers, a folding chair or blanket, and a red-light flashlight or headlamp to preserve your night vision. Stay on established roads, park only in designated pullouts, and watch your footing around cacti and uneven terrain. Designated stargazing areas at Quail Springs, Hidden Valley, Cap Rock, and Ryan Mountain are excellent options. At the same time, the Pinto Basin Road and Cottonwood Campground offer some of the park's darkest skies. Visitors looking to avoid congestion may also find excellent viewing from quieter locations in Wonder Valley, Landers, or the outskirts of Joshua Tree.

I-10 Bridge Maintenance Project
Caltrans crews will continue performing bridge repairs and preventative maintenance along Interstate 10 (I-10) between Loma Linda and Yucaipa. Motorists should expect nighttime lane, shoulder, and occasional ramp closures from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, with possible weekend night work.

Westbound (WB) I-10 on-ramp and off-ramp closures
· Orange St on-ramp
Eastbound (EB) I-10 on-ramp and off-ramp closures

SR-18 Maintenance - Big Bear Valley
- SR-18 (Big Bear Blvd.) – Changeable Message Sign installation continues between Cienega Road and Iris Drive from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expect intermittent lane closures with flaggers directing traffic.
- SR-18 (Arrowbear Drive to Big Bear Dam) – Drainage and safety improvements continue with one-way traffic control between Arrowbear Drive and Route 38/North Shore Drive (Big Bear Dam). Work runs Thursday: 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m. and Friday: 7 a.m.–2 p.m. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes.
SR-18 Maintenance
SR-38 Maintenance - Redlands and Fawnskin

Redlands: Beginning Monday, August 10, Caltrans will start a long-term pavement rehabilitation and safety improvement project along portions of Lugonia Avenue (SR-38). Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional nighttime and weekend operations. Motorists should expect temporary closures, detours, and delays as crews complete pavement repairs, sidewalk improvements, and signal enhancements.

Fawnskin: On Monday, August 10, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Caltrans maintenance crews will perform a pavement overlay operation on SR-38 between Bluebill Drive and Shore Drive. The work will require one-way traffic control with flaggers, so drivers should expect brief delays and reduce their speed through the work zone.

Residents can obtain birth, death, and marriage certificates, apply for marriage licenses, record documents, file fictitious business names, and access other ARC services.
