San Bernardino County invites readers to submit photos and videos of our county.
Since October 2024, we’ve enjoyed sharing photos submitted by our readers and social media audience that highlight destinations across San Bernardino County. Through this effort, it has become clear that some of the most beautiful images that we receive do not always fit within the category of destinations.
Most of these images capture the county’s natural beauty or interesting sites that tell you something about the place we live. Therefore, we invite you to contribute your photos and videos to our new photo column, SBC Through Your Eyes.
This new column features photos and videos that show San Bernardino County in many different aspects, from destinations to cityscapes and nature.
San Bernardino County history: Mitchell Caverns
Mitchell Caverns. Photo courtesy of Bruce Herwig.
Providence Mountains State Recreation Area is a remote Mojave Desert park and the home of the Mitchell Caverns. The caverns are located approximately 100 miles east of Barstow, 60 miles west of Needles, and 16 miles north of Interstate 40 along Essex Road at an altitude of 4,300 feet.
The caverns in the Providence Mountains were a sacred place for the Chemehuevi Indians where a number of tools and fire pits have been found. The caves lie within a thick sequence of marine Permian limestone formed during the Pleistocene epoch. Over time, dripping mineral water left deposits of calcium carbonate that formed stalactites, stalagmites and other cave formations.

Pet of the Week: Zorro

Meet Zorro, a sweet two‑year‑old shepherd mix who is familiar with the commands “sit” and “lay down.” He loves catching treats mid‑air and never says no to a good belly rub.
Zorro gets along wonderfully with his kennelmate, Bear. During playtime, he’ll often roll onto his back and let Bear “win” their wrestling matches. Zorro loves playing fetch, tug-of-war and spending time with people.
