The department’s accredited Veteran Service Officers help connect local veterans and their families with important federal and state benefits earned through military service, including disability compensation, pension programs, healthcare enrollment, education benefits, housing assistance, employment resources, counseling services, and mental health support. Visit va.sbcounty.gov to learn more about all of the support services available.
In addition, monthly outreach visits help make assistance more accessible for veterans in the High Desert and Morongo Basin. Veteran Service Officers visit Joshua Tree on the second Wednesday of each month and Barstow on the third Thursday of each month, providing personalized support closer to home for veterans seeking assistance with benefits, healthcare enrollment, pension programs, education services, and other resources. Information about both outreach visits is available on the Third District website or by clicking the highlighted community names above.
Veterans across San Bernardino County also have access to a growing network of community events and support programs designed to connect them with local resources. Regional Leaders Gather for Annual City County Conference
Supervisor Rowe welcomed attendees to this year’s City County Conference, where regional leaders, policymakers, educators, business representatives, and industry experts gathered to discuss some of the biggest issues shaping the future of the county. The annual two-day conference serves as a forum for collaboration and the exchange of ideas between local cities, towns, and county government. This year’s discussions focused on regional priorities including housing and workforce development, transportation and infrastructure, and public safety innovation.
One of the conference’s featured demonstrations highlighted San Bernardino County Fire and its quadruped “robot dog” technology, designed to help firefighters safely investigate hazardous environments such as unstable structures, confined spaces, and extreme conditions without placing personnel at risk. The demonstration showcased how technology and innovation continue to play an increasing role in public safety operations throughout the region.

Symphony Seeks 200 Piccolo Players for Concert Under the Stars
The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra is inviting the community to be part of a one-of-a-kind musical experience during its annual “America, the Beautiful” Concert Under the Stars on June 20 at San Bernardino Valley College. After making history in 2024 with a record-breaking performance featuring 192 piccolo players performing John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever,” the Symphony is aiming even higher this year with a goal of 200 piccoloists joining together for the grand finale. Organizers are encouraging piccolo players of all ages and skill levels to take part in what promises to be another unforgettable night of music and community celebration.
Participants will perform alongside members of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Symphony Conductor-In-Residence Raphaela Lacerda and Maestro Anthony Parnther. The event offers a rare opportunity for community members to share the stage with professional musicians while helping recreate the “wall of sound” that earned the orchestra its record-setting achievement. Organizers say the performance will also help celebrate the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary in a fun and memorable way.
As part of the volunteer community performance, each participant will receive two free tickets to enjoy the full concert and fireworks show from a designated area. Organizers say there is room for everyone “from age 8 to 80,” adding that if you can play the notes, there is a place for you in this historic community performance. Use this link to learn more and register to participate.

Needles High School Celebrates Another State Championship Season
Needles High School is once again celebrating championship success, as the Lady Stangs softball team captured its fifth consecutive Nevada 2A State Championship while the Mustangs baseball team finished as State Runner-Up. The Lady Stangs battled through an impressive tournament run, rebounding from an opening-round loss to defeat White Pine and Yerington before dominating unbeaten Battle Mountain twice on championship Saturday. Needles secured the title with a 10-5 victory in the final game, capping another remarkable season for the program.
The Needles Mustangs baseball team also turned in an outstanding postseason performance, advancing to the Nevada 2A State Championship game for the second straight year. The Mustangs faced Lake Mead Christian Academy in a rematch of last year’s title game, with Lake Mead ultimately earning a 9-5 victory.
Although located in California, Needles High School competes in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) because of its unique geographic location. As one of only a handful of California schools participating in the NIAA, Needles proudly represents both its school and community on the state stage. This year’s success once again showcased the talent and determination that continue to define Needles athletics.
