New CalFresh work and community engagement requirements begin in June
Many CalFresh recipients will soon be required to meet new work requirements to maintain their benefits.
The California statewide waiver that allowed certain CalFresh recipients to receive benefits without meeting requirements expired on Nov. 2, 2025. Most counties in California, including San Bernardino County, will implement Able-Bodied Adult Without Dependents (ABAWD) work and community engagement requirements effective June 1.
Under ABAWD rules, some adult CalFresh recipients must meet work and community engagement requirements to continue receiving benefits. This generally includes participating in employment, training or approved activities for at least 20 hours per week (80 hours per month). Individuals who do not meet the requirements and do not qualify for an exemption may be limited to three months of CalFresh benefits within a three-year period.

Baker’s “lonely fire station” serves a critical lifeline along the I-15

Deep in the Mojave Desert, where the I-15 stretches across one of the most remote and unforgiving landscapes in California, San Bernardino County Fire Station 53 stands watch. The station in Baker serves more than 5,000 square miles of open desert, federal land and one of the busiest corridors in the nation. More than 220,000 vehicles pass through every day, and when something goes wrong out there, whether it is a semi-truck fire, a traffic collision or a traveler stranded in 105-degree heat, help can be over an hour away. This is not a warning; it is the reality County Fire crews face every single day.

To symbolize this, the Children’s Hospital’s lobby was transformed once again into an art gallery by displaying colorful paper dolls decorated by the hospital’s littlest patients. From hand-drawn self-portraits to iconic TV characters, these children expressed themselves through their unique art pieces, turning the lobby into a corridor of hope.

Submit your photos and videos of the county's destinations, nature and cityscapes
Since October 2024, we’ve enjoyed sharing photos submitted by our readers and social media audience that highlight destinations across San Bernardino County. Through this effort, it has become clear that some of the most beautiful images that we receive do not always fit within the category of destinations.
Most of these images capture the county’s natural beauty or interesting sites that tell you something about the place we live. Therefore, we are excited to introduce a new weekly photo and video feature called SBC Through Your Eyes.
This new column will feature photos and videos that show San Bernardino County in many different aspects, from destinations to cityscapes and nature.
San Bernardino County history: Samuel Merrill
 Samuel Merrill.
In the 1800s, newly constructed railroads from the East Coast made travel to the West Coast quicker, safer and more affordable. The emerging citrus industry helped make Southern California a destination for speculation.
Many people moved west seeking not only improved health but also greater fortunes. One such investor was Samuel Merrill, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1867, he was elected governor of Iowa. During his time in office, he was credited with promoting railroad construction, improving education and supporting small businesses.
Soon after retiring from public office, Merrill moved to San Bernardino County. He recognized the potential for land development and purchased large swaths of the valley, including nearly 20,000 acres west of San Bernardino.
