Camp Good Grief Featured in the March District Minute
This month’s District Minute features Supervisor Rowe highlighting Camp Good Grief. This program helps children and teens handle the emotional aftermath of violent crime. Jointly run by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office and Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, the three-day camp mixes outdoor activities and emotional support. It gives participants a safe space to process grief and build resilience. In this episode, returning camper Rondey Bullock joins the discussion. The conversation shows how the camp encourages connection, healing, and hope for young people facing loss.
Hear directly from Rondey about how Camp Good Grief has impacted his life and why he encourages others to attend. The District Minute is a monthly feature of San Bernardino County News Now and can be viewed on the County's YouTube channel.

Did You Know? The Story of Big Bear Alpine Zoo
There’s so much to love about San Bernardino County—and sometimes, it’s the little-known facts that make it even more special. In a recent video message, Supervisor Dawn Rowe shares a fun and fascinating highlight: the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is one of only two alpine zoos in the entire United States. Originally opened in 1959 as a wildlife rehabilitation center following a devastating wildfire, the zoo now cares for more than 85 species—many native to the San Bernardino Mountains—and successfully releases about 90% of rehabilitated animals back into the wild. It’s also home to incredible residents, such as bald eagles. Click here to watch the video.
Located in the heart of Big Bear Lake, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is more than just a zoo. It’s a dedicated rehabilitation facility focused on rescuing, rehabilitating, and, whenever possible, releasing injured and orphaned wildlife. Guests can experience up-close encounters with mountain lions, black bears, wolves, and other native species while learning about conservation efforts that protect our region’s natural beauty. With spring weather bringing fresh mountain air and blooming landscapes, it’s the perfect time to plan a visit. Learn more and plan your trip at bigbearzoo.org.

Springtime Means It’s Time to Fire-Proof Your Property
Spring is here, bringing longer days, warmer sunshine, and the perfect opportunity to get ahead of wildfire season. As the weather improves, now is the ideal time to strengthen your home’s protection by creating defensible space, an essential step in reducing fire risk and improving safety for your family and first responders. CAL FIRE offers a number of simple, effective tips to help homeowners get started.
Simple weekend projects can make a big impact. Start by clearing dead or dry vegetation, including leaves, pine needles, and weeds, from your yard and gutters. Trim tree branches at least six feet from the ground, keep limbs at least ten feet from other trees, and remove any branches hanging over your roof. Cut grasses and weeds to a maximum height of 4 inches, and use powered equipment safely before 10 a.m., and never on hot or windy days.
You can also take your efforts a step further by incorporating fire-resistant landscaping. Replace highly flammable plants with fire-resistant species, add fire breaks with rock or mulch, and consider planting shrubs such as hedging roses, bush honeysuckles, or shrub apples. These small upgrades can help slow the spread of fire and provide an added layer of protection around your home.
Act now to protect your home and community. Get more tips at readyforwildfire.org.
