Supervisor Rowe Calls for Unity After Violence Targeting Hanukkah Display
I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the act of violence that occurred at a home displaying Hanukkah decorations in the Redlands area. Last Friday, a drive-by shooter fired an estimated 20 rounds at the home's front yard, which was filled with blue Hanukkah decorations. Before speeding away, passengers in the vehicle also shouted a racist obscenity. Redlands police are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
We also mourn the lives lost and those traumatized by the horrific mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration near Bondi Beach in Australia, a tragedy that underscores the global threat of antisemitic violence. No one should ever feel threatened, targeted, or unsafe because of who they are, how they worship, or how they express their faith.
Our Jewish neighbors are an integral part of the diverse fabric that makes our county and our country strong. In the season of Hanukkah—a holiday that symbolizes light, resilience, and hope—this act stands in painful contrast to the values that bind us together as a community. Violence and hatred have no place among us. We must reaffirm our commitment to tolerance, respect, and the dignity of every individual.

Progress Continues on Critical Mountain Road Repairs
Following the severe impacts of Tropical Storm Mario in September, significant progress is underway to restore safe and reliable access to mountain communities affected by flooding and debris flows, including along State Route 38 (SR-38) and Seven Oaks Road.
On Seven Oaks Road, the Board of Supervisors has approved an agreement with Caltrans that will be completed in two phases: repaving damaged sections between Middle Control Road and just west of Glass Road, followed by replacement of a bridge. Roadway construction is underway and expected to wrap up in spring 2026, with bridge construction anticipated to begin in summer 2026.
Meanwhile, Caltrans crews continue making monumental progress repairing damage on SR-38 caused by heavy runoff and debris flows. Emergency work includes stabilizing slopes, repairing undermined roadbeds and drainage systems, and advancing construction of the Sierra Slope Retention System. More than 50 crew members are working and recently completed rock-scaling operations to help prevent future slides and restore safe travel through the corridor.
While repairs are complex and weather-dependent, each milestone brings the region closer to fully restoring normal travel routes. Residents and visitors are thanked for their continued patience as crews work carefully and safely to rebuild these critical mountain roads and strengthen them against future storms.

Support Local Businesses During the Holiday Shopping Season
The holiday season is here, and there’s no better time to support the locally owned businesses that help make Morongo Valley such a special place. Through December 24, local merchants across the community are offering special holiday deals and promotions, giving residents and visitors the perfect opportunity to check items off their gift lists while shopping close to home.
When you shop local, you support small business owners, help create local jobs, and strengthen the local economy. These businesses aren’t just storefronts; they’re neighbors, employers, and community partners who invest back into Morongo Valley year-round. Choosing to shop locally helps ensure these shops continue to thrive long after the holidays are over.
Whether you're picking up a unique gift, enjoying a meal, or discovering a new shop, each contribution counts. This holiday season, keep your shopping local and support the businesses that help Morongo Valley shine all year long.

Wildfire Hardening Discounts Available Through the California FAIR Plan
The California FAIR Plan Association has launched a series of new wildfire-hardening discounts designed to help homeowners and business owners reduce their insurance costs while making their properties more resilient to wildfire. These discounts apply to the wildfire portion of policy premiums for both Dwelling Fire and Commercial policies. By initiating safety measures, such as clearing vegetation to create defensible space, property owners may qualify for up to 12 different discounts.
The program breaks discounts into four categories: Immediate Surroundings, Structure, Property Level Completion, and Community. Steps like removing vegetation within five feet of a structure, enclosing eaves, or installing ember-resistant vents each count toward individual discounts. Completing all ten criteria unlocks an additional bonus discount. Property owners in Fire Risk Reduction Communities or certified Firewise USA sites may also qualify for a community-level discount, with even greater savings for those meeting both standards.
As the state’s insurer of last resort, the FAIR Plan encourages property owners to strengthen their wildfire defenses and work with their insurance agents to pursue standard-market coverage whenever possible. These new discounts support California’s broader wildfire-resilience initiatives and offer meaningful financial incentives for taking proactive, safety-focused steps. More information is available through the websites of the California Department of Insurance and Firewise USA.

Third District Football Makes History with Two State Championships
The Third District is celebrating a remarkable year for high school football, as Needles and Barstow each captured state championships in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, November 25, Needles High School claimed the Nevada Class 2A State Championship with a 22–12 victory over Pershing County at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The win marked the Mustangs’ first state title since 2007 and capped a season of redemption. After losing to Pershing County early in the fall, the Mustangs' offense rose to the occasion, delivering two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to claim the state championship in their unique California-Nevada league.
On Friday, December 12, Barstow High School made history by winning the 2025 CIF State Division 4AA Championship, defeating Sutter High School 17–7. The victory made Barstow the first High Desert high school football program to win a CIF state football title. After trailing at halftime, the Aztecs’ defense dominated the second half with three interceptions, while running back Nicholas Gaoa scored two touchdowns to complete a remarkable 12–3 season and a 12-game winning streak.
Two teams. Two titles. Congratulations to the athletes, coaches, and staff at Needles and Barstow High Schools on their championship seasons!

Firefighting Innovation Takes Flight in San Bernardino County
As part of its continued commitment to innovation, San Bernardino County Fire recently hosted a technology demonstration by Seneca, a California-based company advancing next-generation aerial fire suppression. The demonstration showcased the Argo-1, a semi-autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to support firefighters and reshape early response efforts for vegetation fires.
Keeping wildfires small remains a top priority for San Bernardino County Fire, with early detection and rapid suppression playing a critical role in that strategy. The Argo-1 aligns with this mission through its autonomous flight capabilities, thermal detection technology, precision targeting, and high-powered suppression system. Designed to serve as a force multiplier, the platform highlights the evolving role of unmanned aircraft in wildfire response.
San Bernardino County Fire continues to explore innovative tools that enhance firefighter safety, improve operational effectiveness, and strengthen community protection countywide. Visit San Bernardino County Fire's YouTube channel to watch the firefighting drone demonstration video.

Staying Safe While Shopping This Holiday Season
As the holiday shopping season enters the final weekend, it’s also a time when extra awareness can go a long way. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reminds residents that a few simple precautions can help keep you, your family, and your belongings safe while running errands or checking items off your gift list. Staying alert and planning ahead can make all the difference during this busy time of year.
Shoppers are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings, especially in parking lots and when using ATMs. Instead of leaving gifts or other valuables visible inside your vehicle, secure them in your trunk. If possible, don’t shop alone, park in well-lit and heavily populated areas, and have your keys in hand before exiting a store. Using credit or debit cards instead of carrying large amounts of cash can also reduce risk, and any lost or stolen cards should be reported to your bank immediately.
The Sheriff’s Department also advises keeping personal items such as purses, wallets, and cell phones with you at all times, and remaining cautious of anyone approaching you as a potential distraction. During the holiday season, criminals often take advantage of crowded spaces and distracted shoppers. By staying aware and taking these extra steps, residents can focus on enjoying the season and getting home safely with their holiday cheer intact.
