Celebrating Stewardship Along Route 66 and Across the Desert
San Bernardino County Code Enforcement is doing its part to get America’s most famous highway ready for a milestone. In preparation for the 100th anniversary of Route 66 in 2026, crews recently filled one and a half trailers with tires and another half trailer with trash, clearing the way for a cleaner, safer, and more scenic Mother Road. These ongoing cleanup efforts reflect the county’s commitment to preserving the historic charm and beauty of Route 66 while protecting the desert landscape.
That same community spirit is driving local volunteers to take action as well. The Amboy Community Cleanup Day on Saturday, November 1, invites residents and travelers alike to lend a hand along the Route 66 corridor. Volunteers will meet at Roy’s Motel Café, 87520 National Trails Highway, at 7:00 a.m. The first 40 participants will receive a free lunch and a commemorative shirt. Those interested in joining can email Nicole@VisitAmboy.com and learn more at visitamboy.com.
Further west, the Town of Yucca Valley will host a Free Residential Sustainability Event on Saturday, October 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Yucca Valley Transfer Station, 58925 Sunnyslope Drive. Residents can drop off old appliances, furniture, tires, green waste, and electronic waste, and take advantage of free on-site document shredding. Household hazardous waste, commercial trash, and construction debris will not be accepted. Find more information at yucca-valley.org.

County Fire Explorer Program Inspires the Next Generation of Firefighters
The San Bernardino County Fire Explorer Program gives young people a firsthand look at the mental and physical requirements to be a professional firefighter. Under the guidance of trained County Fire personnel, Explorers gain hands-on experience in firefighting, emergency response, and community service. Through regular drills, specialized academies, and competitions, participants build confidence, discipline, and teamwork while learning the fundamentals of fire service operations.
In addition to rigorous training, Fire Explorers play an active role in the community. They volunteer at public events, assist firefighters during emergencies, and promote fire safety education. This outreach benefits the communities they serve and fosters leadership and civic pride among participants. Explorers are held to high standards of professionalism and commitment, maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA and dedicating time to ongoing training, fundraisers, and physical fitness.
The Explorer Program serves as a bridge for those considering a career in firefighting. With five active Explorer Posts across the County, the program offers an exceptional opportunity for motivated youth to grow, serve, and prepare for the future.
