Volunteers needed for the upcoming homeless count
Volunteers work together to count the homeless during the 2022 Point-In-Time Count.
San Bernardino County is seeking volunteers to help with the official count of unsheltered individuals on Jan. 23 to collect data that will be used to determine how federal resources will be allocated.
The annual Point-In-Time Count (PITC) provides a snapshot of the county’s homeless population, which enables officials to track progress toward reducing homelessness and ensure resources are being directed where they are most needed. The annual count is crucial for securing grant funding to assist individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Victor Valley Museum opens new exhibit - Stolen Identities: River Routes to Freedom

|
Victor Valley Museum (VVM) is proud to announce the opening of a powerful new exhibit, Stolen Identities: River Routes to Freedom, on display now through June 29, 2025. This immersive exhibit features three-dimensional, mixed-media sculptures that illuminate the untold stories of enslaved peoples in the American South who used waterways as crucial paths to freedom.
While the Underground Railroad is often associated with journeys through dense forests and secret safe houses, Stolen Identities sheds light on the lesser known, but equally vital network of rivers, streams and lakes that provided quicker, less detectable routes for escaping slavery. The exhibit explores how these waterways played a pivotal role in evading bounty hunters— offering a new perspective on the strategic intelligence and ingenuity of those seeking liberation.

San Bernardino County history: Devore
Santa Fe Railroad built a depot in Devore in the early 1900s.
Devore is a rural and mountainous neighborhood that stretches from Glen Helen Regional Park to the edge of the San Bernardino Mountains. It was originally part of the Rancho Muscupiabe Land Grant of 1843.
For a brief period of five months in 1902, the area was known as Kenwood, named after one of the community’s largest landowners. That same year, businessman John A. Devore purchased 1,800 acres in the area. He planned an entire community, calling his venture the Devore Land Company.
