The Community Development and Housing Department (CDH), in partnership with the Office of Homeless Services (OHS), have been honored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) with a 2024 Achievement Award for developing a grant program to create additional housing opportunities.
County prepares area in Line fire burn scar for possible flooding, mudflows
 San Bernardino County Public Works, during a recent interview with ABC Channel 7 news, outlined its intensified efforts to protect communities following the nearly-contained Line fire. At the fire’s base, crews have installed a trash rack to filter debris, allowing water to flow safely during storms. In Cook Canyon, teams are also setting up an outlet pipe to handle anticipated runoff and erosion from fire-damaged slopes.

 As winter nears, San Bernardino County Public Works is stepping up its efforts to safeguard communities impacted by the recent Bridge and Line fires. The aftermath of these fires has heightened the risk of flooding in affected areas, prompting proactive measures to mitigate potential hazards.

Protect yourself and the community from respiratory infections
 The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health urges residents to take proactive measures to protect themselves against respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, seasonal influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). While some people may experience mild symptoms when they contract COVID-19, flu or RSV, others can become seriously ill, with some requiring hospitalization. The severity of each season depends on the circulating strains and overall immunity within the population.
Regional Parks rolls back closing hours to align with time change
 To align with the time change on Nov. 3, all participating regional parks will be closing at 5 p.m., beginning Saturday, Nov. 2. through Feb. 2025.

Experts claim that Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is a once in a lifetime event, having last appeared 80,000 years ago. Fortunately, stargazers won’t have to wait too long for the next stargazing event.

This week we return to another fascinating story of the many great county residents who have served in Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector (ATC) Ensen Mason’s position since 1853.
Larry Walker retired from San Bernardino County, having served as an elected county leader from 1986 to 2016. During that time, Walker served as a county supervisor, chair of the Board of Supervisors, auditor-controller, recorder, county clerk, treasurer, tax collector and director of Central Collections. He previously served as mayor of Chino from 1980 to 1986, and as a city council member from 1978 to 1980.
