Arrowhead Regional Medical Center named as a Best Hospital 2024 – 2025
The county’s Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) was named as a Best Hospital 2024 – 2025 by U.S. News & World Report, with honors as a High Performing Hospital.
This distinction recognizes excellence in one or more types of medical care. Of the more than 4,500 hospitals that U.S. News evaluated, only 38% earned even a single High Performing rating.
The San Bernardino County Solid Waste Management Division has completed a special project at the Colton Sanitary Landfill (CSL). This landfill, located in Colton, covers 113 acres, with 88 acres used for waste disposal from 1964 to Dec. 31, 2014.
Originally, the plan to close the CSL in 2014 required covering the 88 acres with a 4-foot-thick layer of soil. Since there wasn’t enough suitable soil on-site, about 600,000 cubic yards of soil would have needed to be brought in. Instead, the county chose Agru’s Closure Turf, a material with a synthetic grass top layer, for the final cover. This product is more cost-effective than hauling in dirt, environmentally friendly, and prevents soil erosion, reducing future maintenance and costs.

Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason is pleased to present another interesting story about the many great county residents that have served in his position since 1853.
Sherman Batchelor, a native of Indiana, came to San Bernardino with his parents when he was four years old. His career highlights include serving as San Bernardino's postmaster for 12 years and as state inheritance tax appraiser for six years. Eventually, he followed in the footsteps of his brother, John Batchelor, who served as the county’s treasurer from 1924 to 1942.
Following his brother’s untimely death, long-time employee Amy Koehler served one year of his term from 1942 to 1943. In 1943, Batchelor was appointed as the county’s tax collector by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. In 1946, he was elected to the office for a four-year term.
