Board of Supervisors proposes protections for law enforcement funding
The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday took a significant step toward ensuring consistent protection for San Bernardino County’s many unincorporated communities.
Supervisors voted unanimously to place the San Bernardino County Law Enforcement Staffing and Community Protection Act of 2024 on the Nov. 5 General Election ballot. If approved by a majority of voters, the act will establish a funding formula for law enforcement resources in unincorporated communities and make it difficult for future boards to reduce law enforcement funding.

Early Friday night, officers from the California Highway Patrol Barstow station were dispatched to a traffic incident on northbound Interstate 15 in the unincorporated area of San Bernardino County.
A sealed container of six industrial grade lithium-ion batteries had detached from a flatbed trailer and rolled onto the roadway near the right shoulder. As the officers arrived, they noticed a visible fire emerging from the container and immediately called County Fire, which established a safety zone to ensure public safety. CHP officers closed both northbound and southbound lanes. County Fire determined that it was a hazardous material, or hazmat situation, as well as a fire.

In a previous column, we discussed the career highlights of John Batchelor from San Bernardino. He served as San Bernardino County tax collector for over 18 years and passed away of heart complications at the age of 69 at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino.
