County fire district designated a Fire Risk Reduction Community
The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is proud to announce its designation as a 2024 Fire Risk Reduction Community (FRRC). This prestigious recognition is part of the state’s effort to enhance fire safety and resilience across California’s high-risk areas.
Chief Munsey honored with FirstNet Patriot Award

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority) has awarded San Bernardino County Fire Chief Dan Munsey with the esteemed Patriot Award.
Established in 2023, the Patriot Award recognizes first responders and public safety agencies that utilize FirstNet technology to enhance community safety. Chief Munsey was honored for his exceptional leadership and innovative use of broadband technologies to protect and safeguard the community.

ARMC recognized with national awards for commitment to patient care
Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability. ARMC was also honored with the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognitions.
 Crews are expected to perform a 55-hour closure of the westbound (WB) I-10 off-ramp to Cedar Avenue from 10 p.m., Friday, July 19 to 5 a.m., Monday, July 22. In conjunction with this closure, the outside (#4) lane of WB I-10 will also be closed near the interchange.
 San Bernardino County Environmental Health Services, in collaboration with San Bernardino County Code Enforcement, is excited to announce a series of workshops designed to assist prospective street vendors in navigating the licensing process and understanding important regulations.
County Animal Care chief appointed president of CalAnimals

San Bernardino County is pleased to announce that George Harding IV, County Animal Care chief, has been elected president of the California Animal Welfare Association (CalAnimals). CalAnimals is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in animal care, sheltering, and law enforcement across the state. They support and represent California’s animal care and control agencies, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) organizations, humane societies and other animal welfare organizations.
Harding’s presidency is a significant milestone for our community, as his extensive experience and leadership will drive initiatives that enhance animal welfare standards and practices throughout California, benefiting both animals and residents.

Through July 31, animal lovers can take advantage of the Paws of July campaign to adopt a furry companion at no cost. During this month-long event, all adoption fees are waived, providing a unique chance to welcome a new pet into your home without any financial barriers.
Sheriff’s operation helps dozens of homeless residents
The Sheriff’s Community Service & Reentry Division, Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement Team (H.O.P.E.) located 39 individuals experiencing homelessness and provided 36 individuals with referrals to programs for assistance on Friday, July 12, as part of Operation Shelter Me in Fontana and surrounding unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County. Eight individuals were linked with follow-up professional services.
Operation Consequences: June 29 through July 12
Between June 29 and July 12, investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Gangs/Narcotics Division along with deputies from patrol stations served 18 search warrants and contacted suspects at various locations in Ontario, Redlands, San Bernardino and Desert Hot Springs.
Veterans Affairs serves those who serve our country
The San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs is dedicated to helping veterans and their families receive the benefits they’ve earned.
County Veteran Service Officers (VSO) are advocates for veterans. Their role is to provide veterans and their families with competent, high-quality representation that results in receiving all benefits that veterans have earned. All services are free.
A Workforce Development success story

Michael Salazar never let go of his dream to own a men’s grooming salon, through family crises, addiction, anger issues and incarceration.
“I didn’t know anything about success,” says Salazar, who at 33 is transforming his life through the help of the Workforce Development Board (WDB) and its partners at the CityWay Community Economic Development Corp. Since entering the program, Salazar has put in motion his plans for a barber salon and hair-grooming training school, while marketing a line of all-natural hair and skin products.
 This week’s San Bernardino County destination is the María Merced Williams and John Rains House in Rancho Cucamonga.
In 1856, Rains, a businessman, married Merced, the daughter of Chino Rancho owner Isaac Williams and granddaughter of Don Antonio María Lugo, owner of the San Bernardino Rancho.
Rains invested in three ranchos and the Bella Union Hotel in Los Angeles. He purchased a 13,000-acre rancho in Cucamonga for $16,500 and constructed a brick house on the property at a cost of about $18,000.

Don Antonio Maria Lugo was born at the Mission San Antonio de Padua in present-day Jolon, California in 1775. His father, Francisco Salvador, was a soldier for the Spanish government and was sent to Alta California to protect the mission.
Lugo grew up to be a soldier for the Spanish government like his father, a rancher, mayor of Los Angeles from 1816 to 1819, and a key figure in San Bernardino County history.
After visiting the San Bernardino and Yucaipa Valleys in 1839, Lugo requested and received a land grant from his great-nephew, Governor of Mexican California Juan B. Alvarado.
