First 5 San Bernardino Seeking Applicants For $1.5 Million in “Innovation Funding”
First 5 San Bernardino launches simplified process to address community-level challenges with practical, collaborative solutions
First 5 San Bernardino, well-known for its 23-year history of investing in children from prenatal through five years, is launching a new and innovative funding opportunity.
Local organizations seeking financial support to initiate or develop programs or ideas aligning with First 5 San Bernardino’s strategic plan are encouraged to apply for funding through the organization’s request for applications process https://first5sanbernardino.org.
“This is an amazing opportunity, especially for smaller-sized organizations who may already be collaborating with each other, to apply for funding to address critical issues and needs facing young children and their families,” said First 5 San Bernardino Executive Director Karen E. Scott. “Further, we’re hoping it may spark additional creative thinking on how to engage with families and the community in identifying and meeting needs as possible, which is exactly why the initiative was created.”
Named after a beloved staff member who recently lost her battle with cancer, the Merceides Logans Community Innovation Initiative is a $1.5 million fund designated to foster a progressive yet simplified approach for community organizations to obtain resources and work together.
A typical funding application process can be overwhelming for some organizations, explained Ronnie Robinson, First 5 San Bernardino section manager of systems and communication. “This opportunity was designed to be easier to navigate, and we invite community organizations, churches, small nonprofits and those with similar or shared interests in helping children, to apply,” Robinson said.

County Seeks Public Comment on Draft Housing Element Plan
The County wants to hear from you! We’re issuing a last call for feedback by Monday, Sept. 26 on the final review of the proposed Draft Housing Element that will shape future housing programs, goals and policies through 2029.
The County began soliciting feedback for the Draft Housing Element on Sept. 12 continuing the third round of public review for the document, which first began in November 2021. The housing element plan is one of the 11 elements of the County Policy Plan and includes proposed goals and policies that address key housing issues in the county.
The plan’s goals and policies are based on a comprehensive evaluation of existing housing programs and policies and an analysis of housing characteristics, an assessment of fair housing issues and describes the challenges and resources for housing development.
Some of the issues the Draft Housing Element addresses include the provision of a mix and balance of housing types and costs to meet the needs of all segments of the community while enhancing and preserving the character of local communities. Other areas include the provision of affordable housing for special needs groups, the promotion of fair housing for all residents and the maintenance of the existing affordable housing stock.
The County seeks public input on the Draft Housing Element and Technical Reports to ensure appropriate housing strategies are not only evaluated efficiently and effectively but developed and implemented a well.

High School Voter Education Week Kicks Off with Secretary of State Visit
On Wednesday, California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber, Ph.D., visited Chaffey and Ontario High Schools speaking to students about the importance of voter pre-registration, opportunities to partner with county election officials, and how to foster environments that create a desire among teens to be lifelong, civically engaged citizens.
“When you don’t vote you lose your opportunity to influence your life, because even though you achieve certain things people can write laws and make certain rules that can take away your right,” Weber told students. “That is your power, that is your voice.”
Second District Supervisor Janice Rutherford joined Weber at Ontario High School, her alma mater, for a meet and greet with students highlighting the importance of voter education among the next generation of leaders.
San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters Office, Chaffey and Ontario High School Principals, and an Assistant Superintendent from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools also participated in the events promoting civic engagement among youths and teens.
The California Education Code designates the last two full weeks in April and September to be High School Voter Education Weeks. This provides an opportunity for high school students to learn more about the process of voting, find out how to be a student poll worker, get resources to host a student mock election on their campus, and learn how to organize voter registration drives on school campuses during this period.

 Museum Kicks Off Old Spanish Trail Day at Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery, Saturday, Oct. 1
The San Bernardino County Museum invites all ages to come visit the historic Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 1 to kick off the Old Spanish Trail Day celebration.
Activities include feature videos highlighting the history of the Old Spanish Trail along with opportunities to explore the cemetery grounds.
Refreshments, music and arts & crafts will be on-hand to entertain visitors. The event will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Apple Valley Airshow Takes to the Sky, Saturday, Oct. 8
The 19th Annual Apple Valley Airshow and NAPA® Auto Parts Car Show returns after a two-year hiatus on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Apple Valley Airport featuring extreme aerobatics from legendary pilots, skydivers, paratroopers, warbirds and military fly-bys. Vintage planes, classic cars and military vehicles will also be on display.
A full schedule is planned, including Dawn Patrol RV Formation Team, breathtaking aerobatics by the Undaunted Airshows formation aerobatics team, aerobatic pilot Vicky Benzing in her 1940 Boeing Stearman biplane, John Collver in his AT-6/SNJ “Wardog”, Rich Piccirilli with Just In Time Skydivers, Paratroopers jumping from the C-53 Skytrooper D-Day Doll, vintage warbirds like two North American P-51 Mustangs from Palm Springs Air Museum and TBM-3E Avenger and SBD-5 Dauntless, SNJ-5 Texan, P-38 Lightning, the B-25 Mitchell from Planes of Fame Air Museum and more.
Along with the eyes in-the-sky excitement, the STEM Expo tent will offer the true aviation learning experience for all ages to enjoy where eventgoers can learn to fly a plane, build a plane or rocket, and test their “Top Gun” flying skills in a flight simulator at no additional cost. The airshow provides scholarships for local students in the STEM field.
On-hand will be test and aerobatic pilot Chuck Coleman in his Extra 300L performing some of the same aerobatics he trained the actors in for “Top Gun: Maverick” movie.
Spectators will have the opportunity to meet all the pilots and get autographs after their performances.
The Apple Valley Airshow, a family favorite event, attracts spectators from all over Southern California. This year’s highlight also includes the A-4 Skyhawk, two F-16 Vipers from Edwards AFB and a C-27J Spartan from the US Coast Guard Sacramento.
The NAPA® Auto Parts Car Show “Show and Shine” along with Inglis Classics “Hot Rod Hotties” will rev up the oldies but goodies experience in classic cars. Spectators are encouraged to stop by the NAPA® booth and pick up a form so they can vote for your favorite car.
Eventgoers will be entertained with live music throughout the day by the band Modd Rodds.
The event is sponsored by San Bernardino County Department of Airports.
There will be a variety of food and souvenir booths as well as a beer garden hosted by the Rotary Club of Apple Valley.
The event is open from 9 a.m. and to 3 p.m. Parking is free. Aerial demonstrations are from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Only cash will be accepted for ticket purchases. Note: Vendors may accept credit/debit cards.

SubieFest Pet Adoption Event Finds Dogs ‘Fur-Ever’ Homes, Brings in Donations
SubieFest 2022, held last Sunday at the National Orange Show Event Center, was a whopping success for San Bernardino County Animal Care with nine dog adoptions taking place.
The event took a surprising turn when Animal Care staff had to return to the shelter to bring more dogs for adoptions.
Thank you to Subaru for helping these pets find 'fur-ever' homes!
Through the Animals aRe First Fund (ARFF), pet adoptions were a special event price of $25. In addition, several donations were collected for the Animals aRe First Fund (ARFF).

San Bernardino County is pleased to announce the 2022 State of the County and Regional Business Summit will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022.
This years’ event theme is “Vision Forward,” and will include forward-looking commentary on industry trends impacting San Bernardino County from business leaders such as Randall Lewis of Lewis Group of Companies and Kim Snyder of Prologis.
The event will close with a live performance by Beckham, a BMG Nashville recording artist and San Bernardino County native who performed at State of the County last year.
The 2022 State of the County will be held at the Ontario Convention Center, 2000 E. Convention Center Way in Ontario. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $60.
