Sheriff Opens New Culinary Lab at Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center
People incarcerated at Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center are honing their culinary skills in a newly redesigned and modernized Culinary Lab that was recently upgraded by the Sheriff’s Department.
New commercial equipment was purchased to meet all food preparation health code guidelines and the Culinary Lab was renovated into a professional teaching and training environment.
The Culinary Lab is run by instructor Dael Strange, who has been teaching for the Sheriff’s Department since 2013. Her 16-week program, which is certified by San Bernardino County Schools, is offered to both men and women who are incarcerated. The program prepares students not only for careers in the food preparation and food service industry, but also provides them valuable life skills on how to prepare healthy meals, make food from scratch, and feed their family on a budget.
Strange certifies all her students in safe food handling, which results in each student receiving a Food Handler Certification. Students who perform well in the program can be offered the ServSafe test and certification which opens more employment doors to participants, including management-level positions at many establishments.

Public Health Night at San Manuel Stadium is a Home Run Hit
After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, public health agencies in San Bernardino and Riverside counties teamed up once again to host “Public Health Night” at the sold-out Inland Empire 66ers game at the San Manuel Stadium on Aug. 25. Even though the evening was a warm one, that didn’t stop approximately 4,000 fans from filling the stadium stands.
As the crowds entered the stadium, they were provided information on 27 public health programs that are administered by San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Before the start of the game, fans were invited to visit all the tables in the concourse and interact with the program staff. The programs provided information and resources, giveaway items and educational demonstrations. The programs were available throughout the evening so baseball fans could visit with them between innings.
The evening started with the ceremonial first pitches from both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and this year we honored COVID-19 staff who played a pivotal role in our pandemic efforts. San Bernardino County’s first pitchers included Sabrina Barreto, Contact Tracing Program; Vanessa Ermilio, COVID-19 Health Ambassadors; and Elray Burke, from the Preparedness and Response Program. The stadium was then treated to the singing of national anthem by San Bernardino County’s own Renee Bailey, multimedia production specialist with the County Administrative Office.
“We are excited to resume events such as Public Health Night because one of our primary objectives is to help the community and their health. We want to remind everyone that Public Health does more than just take care of COVID. We have many programs and services available to the community that we want everyone to be aware of and utilize,” said San Bernardino County Public Health Director Josh Dugas.
In the end, the Inland Empire 66ers came out on top against the Lake Elsinore Storm by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings.
We would like to thank everyone who came out to Public Health Night to show support for a great night of baseball and for checking out all the services the county has to offer. We’ll see you again next year! To see photos from this year’s event, visit: https://wp.sbcounty.gov/dph/2022-public-health-night.
