Memorial Flag Raised in Honor of Abused and Neglected Children
The Children’s Memorial flag was raised at the San Bernardino County Government Center on April 22 to honor the children whose lives have been lost to child abuse and neglect.
Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Dawn Rowe and Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., provided opening remarks along with Children and Family Services Interim Director Jeany Zepeda and Children’s Network Interim Network Officer Wendy Alvarez.
The event and moment of silence are part of a statewide effort to increase awareness of child abuse and neglect. The flag is raised the fourth Friday of the month each April during child abuse awareness month.
The vision of the Office of Child Abuse Prevention (OCAP) is for each county to host a Children’s Memorial Day event and to conduct a flag raising ceremony on the fourth Friday in the month of April to honor the young lives lost.
Statewide participation in the raising of the Children’s Memorial Flag will increase awareness of child abuse and neglect through a unified message and facilitate broader community involvement in child abuse and neglect prevention.
OCAP also encourages all counties to observe a moment of silence and reflection to honor the young lives lost to violence.
To report child abuse or neglect call 2-1-1.

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center Brings Expanded Health Care Services to the Fontana Area
Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) will be opening an expanded new clinic location in Fontana. This location features two procedure rooms, 30 exam rooms, three consult rooms, and spaces to view or read patient educational materials.
The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new clinic took place at the new location on April 20. In attendance were staff from the Fontana clinic, hospital administration and San Bernardino County staff members. The clinic will be serving patients in the near future.
“The new, state-of-the-art clinic in Fontana allows ARMC to expand and enhance the essential health care services the hospital provides to our residents,” said Second District Supervisor Janice Rutherford. “While the clinic features additional space and new equipment, patients will be comforted to know the staff members who have served them for so long will remain at the new site.”
Patients can visit the Fontana location to receive medical services that include radiology, mammograms, ultrasounds, enhanced care management (ECM), and laboratory services, including specimen collection and blood draws.
“This clinic will provide many services for those in need of medical services and health maintenance to prevent long-term health issues,” said Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca Jr., “For those in need of labs, family health medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, and maternity services, etc., this facility is a great place to head on over to. Looking forward to seeing the constant growth Arrowhead Medical Regional Center has in our community. Stay safe and healthy.”
The Fontana clinic currently sees an average of 1,400 patients a month. The larger new facility allows for more patients with a wider range of health care needs to be seen.
“This expansion will give us the opportunity to better serve our Fontana patient community,” said ARMC Hospital Director William Gilbert. “This larger facility allows us to serve a greater number of patients, and we also will be able to accommodate more resident physicians for rotations through our clinic.”
The new facility is located at 16888 Baseline Avenue in Fontana.

Sheriff's Department to Host Nine Locations on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
The Sheriff’s Department, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will help the public prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs.
Bring your pills for disposal on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to any one of these collection sites throughout the county. The service is free and anonymous.
“Educating the public on the proper disposal of unused medicines has led to over 4,372 tons of prescription drugs being turned in last October (nationwide). The success of this program is evident; I believe residents are aware of this service and plan for it,” said Sheriff Shannon Dicus.
Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to potential accidental poisoning, misuse, and overdose. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse.
Also, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the April 30th Take-Back Day event, go to https://www.dea.gov/takebackday. Inquiries can also be made to 1-800-882-9539 or contact the Sheriff’s Public Affairs Division at 909-387-3700.
