County Making Vaccines Easier and More Convenient
New Sites Open and ‘Fire & Ice Cream’ Vaccine Pop-ups
To get as many of our residents vaccinated as possible, San Bernardino County continues to add new locations and is even launching a new vaccination pop-up program to create excitement around taking “Our Shot for Hope.”
Three testing sites in Montclair, Rancho Cucamonga, and San Bernardino have been converted into new full-time vaccination locations. The County is also testing the effectiveness of new Fire & Ice Cream pop-up vaccine events in conjunction with the County Fire Department that will offer vaccinations along with free churros and ice cream.
Fire & Ice Cream vaccine events
The goal behind the Fire & Ice Cream events is to bring vaccinations to the neighborhood level by hosting pop-up vaccination events in neighborhood parks. Appointments will not be available for these pop-up events – walk-ups only.
The events will start with a street parade of County fire trucks, the County mobile vaccine van, an ice cream truck and a churro wagon. The convoy will drive slowly through neighborhood streets, with a firefighter announcing via PA where to go for a vaccine and free churros and ice cream.
There is a Fire and Ice Cream parade and vaccination event scheduled for this Saturday, May 8, at Nunez Park in San Bernardino (1717 West 5th Street), with the parade in surrounding streets starting at 12:30 p.m., and vaccinations and snack distribution from 2 to 6 p.m. at the park. The County team conducted a preview run today, much to the community’s delight.
“Fire and Ice (Cream) is an example how committed we are to making vaccines available across the county, especially in vulnerable or hard to reach neighborhoods,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “We’re very happy to be doing this in conjunction with our County Fire Department. Firefighters are trusted heroes in our communities, and nothing draws attention like fire trucks and ice cream trucks!”
New vaccine sites converted from testing
The converted testing sites allow residents to access a vaccine site in everyday locations where they may already be shopping, attending school or running errands. And while appointments are always encouraged, walk-ups to County-operated sites are now welcome too. COVID-19 testing will still be available at these sites on Mondays.
The Pfizer vaccine will be offered at ongoing sites, while the “one and done” Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be given at the Adelanto event (which runs this week only).

“Seeing Family and Friends Again” commercial
New Commercials Remind Us That Vaccines Bring Us Back to Normal
The County is launching both English and Spanish versions of a new television commercial this week on Spectrum Cable and iHeart online streaming platforms using fun animation to remind viewers that getting vaccinated means a return to life as we knew it.
In the 30-second spot, the ad starts by showing us a lonely girl at her birthday party and a young adult eating alone with a reminder that “life was hard in 2020.” But after a reminder that “vaccines are safe and they work,” we see a new situation with our birthday girl surrounded by friends and family, and our young man enjoying dinner at a bar with friends and other happy patrons.
“We’ve now entered a new phase of our vaccination drive where we need to encourage those residents who have been waiting for whatever reason that now is the time to get their vaccine dose so everyone can feel safe having parties again or gathering in public,” said County Public Information Officer David Wert, who supervised the production of the commercial.
The “Seeing Family and Friends Again” commercial will be seen throughout many of the most popular channels on Spectrum Cable, including HGTV, CNN, Fox News, TNT, Galavision, Lifetime, TNT and The History Channel, among others. It can also be viewed and shared through the County’s YouTube page.
Time to Heal music video
El Sol and Young Visionaries Promote Community Healing Through Music Videos
While the pandemic kept so many people apart, it also highlighted the value and influence that community-based organizations have as trusted voices in reaching and helping many in our Latino and African American communities.
San Bernardino’s El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center and Young Visionaries Youth Leadership Academy are a great example of how organizations have teamed up during the pandemic to make a positive difference in keeping people safe and encouraging testing and vaccinations.
Recently, the two collaborated on a memorable hip hop, cross-cultural tune called “Time to Heal,” which promotes healing in communities during the pandemic with a focus on vaccinations and where we as a community go from here. This video comes on the heels of an earlier music video collaboration (“The Official COVID-19 Song”), which received thousands of views and cleverly uses Banda-style music with a child to make its point about the seriousness of COVID-19 and safe practices.
Production and development of the songs and videos were in part made possible by aTogether Toward Health grant from the Public Health Institute. The grant also supported the development of a healing took kit – a guide to help self-reflect on mental health and learn how to cope after a traumatic experience, such as living through a pandemic.
The County is fortunate to have great COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Group partners such as El Sol and Young Visionaries and we applaud their efforts to keep our communities safe. We encourage you to check out the videos and share them on your social media platforms.
Know Someone with Questions about COVID-19 and the Vaccines?
Dr. Michael Sequeira talks to Professor/Podcaster Alex Avila
We all know someone who still has questions about COVID-19, the vaccines, and the latest developments in what we know about the virus.
This is a podcast to share with someone with questions!
Alex Avila, a professor of English and Liberal Studies at Cal State San Bernardino and voice behind the College Career and Beyond (CCaB) podcast, sat down with the County’s Public Health Officer Dr. Michael Sequeira for a free-wheeling one-hour discussion. Alex starts with hearing Dr. Sequeira’s own experience as an immigrant who became an Emergency Medicine Specialist, and moves into a deep conversation about what we now know about COVID-19.
During the conversation, the two discuss the journey of COVID-19 from the first days to now, including what happened with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, what’s really inside the Moderna vaccine, and much, much more. You can listen to this episode on Apple Podcast, Spotify, Castbox and more; or hear it directly at https://www.avilaproduction.com/?p=2966.
