Persons Over 65 Remain Vaccination Focus This Week
San Bernardino County continues to receive and administer a steady stream of both Pfizer and Moderna vaccine doses, but demand for the vaccinations still exceed our supply.
Individuals over the age of 65 continue to be our priority, and more appointments are opening up starting this week. Senior residents can go to https://sbcovid19.com/vaccine/65plus/#load to sign up to receive alerts announcing appointment availability. The County is also taking additional steps to assist seniors trying to schedule vaccination appointments with extended hours for its vaccination hotline (909-387-3911) and added staff to handle calls.
“We are making every effort to make this process easy for seniors, many of whom are not experienced computer users. This is an unprecedented effort to provide literally thousands of vaccine doses as quickly as possible,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. He noted that appointments are available only to people aged 65 and over who live or work in San Bernardino County, and that proof of age will be required to receive a vaccination.
Check all options for vaccination availability
All county residents should remember vaccination sites are not the only place to receive a vaccine. People are encouraged to check with their healthcare provider and in some cases their employer for vaccine information, availability and locations.
The state has set up additional vaccination sites, via OptumServe, including one at Ayala Park in Bloomington and one at the Yucaipa Community Center. Senior residents interested in scheduling appointments at either of these sites should use a dedicated OptumServe appointment site located here.
Finally, a number of hospitals, pharmacies and physician practices have been provided doses of the vaccines. Residents should check the County’s vaccination webpage often to see if appointments are available. Links to all potential vaccine providers can be found at https://sbcovid19.com/vaccine/.
Limited Eligibility for Teacher Vaccinations; Appointments through School Districts
San Bernardino County officials are reminding educators that COVID-19 vaccinations are currently limited to 1) teachers and school staff conducting (or supporting) in-person instruction to full classrooms; and 2) to those providing in-person instruction to cohorts of students (i.e., groups of students that are smaller than a typical full classroom) at schools that have received waivers from the state of California.
Other teachers within Tier 3, such as those who will offer in-person instruction to cohorts of students at schools that have not yet received state waivers, will become eligible to receive vaccinations when additional supplies become available.
The County also wants teachers to understand that it is currently not issuing appointments for teachers through its normal channels, which includes the County website, helpline or public health clinics. With vaccine doses still in limited supply, the County is concentrating vaccination efforts on residents who are at least 65 years old.
Instead of County vaccination sites, schools and school districts are working with their nearest hospital to arrange vaccinations for their teachers and support staff. The hospitals, in turn, can order doses from the County.
“We are eager to get teachers and others vaccinated, and we are allocating doses to community partners such as hospitals to manage that effort,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “Segmenting recipients this way enables the County itself to focus on inoculating our senior residents — whose demand for the vaccine continues to outpace our available supply. We’re asking everyone to please be patient and cooperate with these guidelines so we can get everyone vaccinated as efficiently as possible.”
County Launches COVID-19 Vaccination Data Dashboard
A comprehensive COVID-19 vaccination dashboard created by the County’s Public Health data team launched this week at sbcovid19.com to provide an at-a-glance look at the status of vaccine distribution and administration in San Bernardino County.
“We are excited about using the technological resources and talent we have in our Public Health data team to create a transparent and informative platform for people to see the state of vaccine administration,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “As we move through and out of this pandemic, this resource will help our residents see how we are progressing on getting vaccines into our communities and into arms as quickly as possible.”
The dashboard displays information about:
- COVID-19 vaccine doses administered to San Bernardino County residents
- COVID-19 vaccine doses administered by San Bernardino County providers
- The number of residents vaccinated with a breakdown of first and second doses
- The percent of the population that has received vaccines in our county
- Demographic data about who has received COVID-19 vaccines by age, race, ethnicity and gender
- A countywide map listing the vaccination numbers in each city that shows the number of residents vaccinated and the rate of those vaccinated in each location.
- A mapped listing of San Bernardino County providers who have received doses of vaccine and how many of those vaccines have been administered to San Bernardino County residents
- COVID-19 vaccine inventory by brand (Pfizer, Moderna)
The dashboard is best viewed on a desktop computer screen. To view the new vaccine data, visit sbcovid19.com and click on “COVID-19 Dashboard.”
