Shining in Our Community
RIDE Car Scholarship - Rancho Cielo
On February 4, 2025, Rancho Cielo celebrated a historic milestone by awarding the first-ever RIDE (Rancho Invests in Driving Equity) Car Scholarship to three recent graduates: Isabel Patino, Anthony Trejo, and Jesus “Chuy” Hernandez. The RIDE program was created after Rancho Cielo’s Equity Committee identified the need to break down barriers to success for students, particularly the lack of reliable transportation. The initiative includes driver’s education, training, and car ownership education.
With only two cars available and three inspiring applicants, the committee reviewed and interviewed each student but struggled to make a decision. Moved by their stories, John Phillips, founder of Rancho Cielo, went out and found a third car.
During the ceremony, Jesus “Chuy” Hernandez, a 2024 Welding & Fabrication graduate, shared how his life changed when he became the proud owner of a 2007 VW Jetta through Rancho Cielo’s RIDE program. The car now helps him balance his full-time psychology studies at Hartnell College and two part-time jobs. Chuy now aspires to pursue a career supporting youth facing similar challenges.
This first round of the RIDE program has been a success, and Rancho Cielo plans to expand it by encouraging car donations at their upcoming fundraiser, the 15th Annual Culinary Round Up on February 23 in Monterey.

Santa Cruz Community Grant Program - Parks California
Parks California’s Santa Cruz Community Grant Program is designed to amplify diverse voices, ensuring that historically underrepresented communities and those who have had limited engagement with our parks are at the heart of the planning process. Parks California is seeking representatives to coordinate community engagement events to inform ongoing planning efforts for California State Parks.
Organizations rooted in and connected to communities of color and economically disadvantaged communities are encouraged to apply for funds to bring groups to State Beaches in the Santa Cruz District. These groups will share their ideas and views on how to create future coastal recreational facilities that increase equity in access and create inclusive park experiences; as well as facilities that are resilient with future coastal processes.
